A/N: Hello there! I would first like to say that, yes, this is a Valentine's Day fic. I know it's not even the fourteenth yet, but I don't really care. Also, there are two parts to this, although this one could be read as a standalone. Second part has all the goodies and that will be up in a few days.
This is Sakura x Karin, so if that isn't your thing, just hit the back button! Anyway, enjoy! A Fool’s Holiday Part One She hated this holiday. Karin would’ve stayed home, but her apartment was starting to feel stuffy and she wanted a drink. The only place to get alcohol at this time of night was the bar near her place and it was already crawling with single, lonely guys looking to drown their sorrows and their dicks. The place was decorated excessively for the holiday. Little pink hearts were stuck onto the side of the bar, and streamers hung down from the edges. Across the entrance was a banner that said Happy Valentine’s Day in curly text with a little cupid in one corner, diapered and holding his standard bow and arrow. Karin scrunched her face up at the sight and quickly drank the rest of her double shot of whiskey. It burned all the way down her throat and warmed her body, but it couldn’t chase the feelings of loneliness away. This was a lovers’ holiday and instead of spending it with someone special, she was drinking it away, surrounded by losers. The only plus about this bar was the sexy bartender. Karin watched her as she poured the man down the bar another drink and gave him a bright smile. She was the most beautiful woman Karin had seen in a long time. She had shoulder length pink hair – there was no way it was real – and emerald green eyes. Her frame was lithe and her skin was delicate and pale. Karin cleared her throat, embarrassed that she’d been staring, and went to take a drink of her whiskey. She’d forgotten the glass was empty. “You want me to refill that for you, sweetheart?” A sweet voice cooed in her ear, tipping a bottle of whiskey over the glass and filling it back up. Karin lifted her head to say thank you, but the words died on her tongue when she met the beautiful green eyes of that bartender. Karin opened and closed her mouth a few times, unsure of what to say and feeling like an idiot because of it. She didn’t think blurting out, “You’re so beautiful!” to this woman would be wise. “You okay?” The woman blinked, waving a perfectly manicured hand in Karin’s face. The red head knew she looked stupid, so she nodded and gave the bartender a little smile. “Alright, then. I’ll just be over here if you need anything.” Karin’s dream woman said with a laugh, going back to where the blonde man was sitting. She felt a pang of jealousy go through her, but she steadfastly ignored it and pushed her glasses further up on her nose. What was wrong with her tonight? She was acting like a petulant child whose favorite toy was being taken away. It was disgusting. Maybe she’d drunk too much alcohol already. Karin licked her lips and glanced over at the bartender again, a warm feeling curling in her belly that had nothing to do with the whiskey. She really was very pretty, wasn’t she? And that blonde guy had to be her boyfriend or something, because they were talking so casually – she was leaning over the counter and invading his personal space – and the guy was just beaming. Someone slid into the seat next to her and Karin didn’t even turn her head to see who it was. But when the person cleared their throat and touched her shoulder, she whipped her head in their direction and snarled out a, “What?!” A man with blue hair and sharper than normal teeth grinned back at her, regardless of the venomous look he was receiving. It figured that Suigestu would be the one to find her in a place like this, alone. “What’s a pretty girl like you doing alone on Valentine’s Day?” he asked her, motioning for the bartender to take his order. Karin watched as the woman sauntered over and offered the smirking man a shy smile. “Hey, pinky! Can I get a beer and something for my little friend over here?” The man nudged his thumb in Karin’s direction and the red head fought the urge to break it off. “You two here together?” The bartender – Sakura – asked with a hint of curiosity, handing the man a sleek bottle of Miller Genuine Draft. She simply refilled Karin’s glass with whiskey again. “Nah.” The blue haired man snorted, twisting the cap off his beer and tipping it back over his mouth. The amber-yellow liquid sloshed over his lips messily, leaving trails to go down his chin. “I wouldn’t be caught dead with this piece of shit.” Karin spat out, throwing the man a nasty glare. Sakura raised her eyebrows in surprise and Suigetsu only grinned back. “Are you following me now or you just that desperate to get laid?” she taunted, taking a slow sip of her whiskey. Sakura’s eyes were on her and it was making her skin tingle. Suigetsu laughed loudly and reached over to loop his arm over her shoulders, clinking his bottle against her glass. “I’m here to meet someone, for your information.” The blue haired man nodded sagely, sitting forward in his chair to wave down the bar counter at the blonde man Sakura had been flirting with earlier. “Oi, Naruto! Get your ass over here and say hi to my friend Karin!” Suigestu grinned. The blonde man let out a laugh as he got up, holding a bottle of water in one hand. He took the seat to Karin’s left and leaned forward so he could talk to the asshole on her other side. She didn’t understand why this Naruto guy couldn’t sit somewhere else. “Hi.” Naruto grinned, sticking out a hand for her to shake it. She did it a little wearily, because if this guy was friends with Suigetsu, he must’ve been just as annoying. “I’m Uzumaki Naruto.” Karin didn’t say anything, just nodded her head and took a deeper drink from her glass. Sakura refilled it without hesitation and their eyes met for a brief second. “So how do you two know each other?” Naruto asked, motioning between Karin and Suigetsu with his silly little bottle of water. Karin snorted into her drink and the pretty bartender gave her a strange look. “I’ve known Suigetsu for over eleven years and I’ve never once met you.” He continued. Suigetsu opened his mouth to answer, but Karin quickly slapped a hand over it and glared at him. “We work together at the hospital.” She said curtly, moving her hand and taking another drink of her whiskey. It was starting to make her light headed, which meant she’d had enough. She pushed her glass away and motioned for Sakura to get her a glass of water. “Do you work at Konoha General?” Sakura asked, lifting a bottle of water from under the counter and filling a clean glass with it. She pushed the glass over to Karin and tossed the bottle away. “I’m still in medical school, but I’m hoping to get a job there.” The pink haired woman smiled. “Konoha General is full of assholes.” Karin muttered as she dragged her fingers through the condensation on her glass. Suigetsu started laughing next to her and she didn’t even hesitate to kick him under the bar. “Shut up, you know you’re one of them!” she yelled at him. The bell above the bar jingled and a few late-night stragglers stumbled in, laughing loudly amongst their group. They took a table near the back and Sakura left to go take their orders. Karin couldn’t help it; her eyes followed the pink haired girl to the back, and then Suigetsu caught her gaze. “You should flirt with her a little.” He suggested, taking an absent sip of his beer as he watched Karin watch Sakura. There was a little smirk lifting the corner of his mouth that made the read head want to punch him. Suigetsu wasn’t stupid. He was the only one at the hospital that had figured out she was a lesbian, and while she was thankful to have a friend to confide in, he still annoyed the fuck out of her. The man waggled his eyebrows at her and made an obscene gesture that involved two of his fingers and his mouth. Karin punched him in the stomach while Naruto laughed and choked on his water. “You know, one day you’re going to look back on tonight and thank me for being an ass.” Suigetsu smirked. “Not likely.” Karin said back, reaching into her back pocket for the twenty she had brought with her. She slapped it onto the counter and got up, stretching her arms out above her head to work out the stiffness. “You’re leaving already?” Sakura appeared at her side, biting softly into her bottom lip and looking over her shoulder at the two men still at the counter. Karin followed her gaze and caught Suigetsu making kissy faces at them, with Naruto trying to hold back his laughter. She huffed, ignoring them and nodded to Sakura’s question. “I have to be at work for the early shift.” Karin sighed, glancing up at the clock above the door. It was almost midnight already and she was tired. She just wanted to go home and crawl into her nice, warm bed. Sakura tilted her head to the side and smiled, before she reached into her shirt pocket and pulled out a little stack of post-it notes. Using the pen tucked into her apron, she wrote her number on one of the pages and tore it off. “Give me a call next time you’re free. We can go have some coffee and maybe talk about your work.” The pink haired woman said, blushing slightly as she stuck the little pink note in Karin’s hand. Behind her, Suigetsu and Naruto burst into applause. “I mean, if you’re interested.” Sakura added quickly, after Karin’s prolonged silence. She fidgeted a little with her apron strings and it was the cutest thing Karin had ever seen. “Oh, please don’t tell me I messed up again.” Sakura sighed dejectedly. “No, it’s – it’s a date. I’ll call you on my next day off.” Karin told her reassuringly, tucking the note safely into her pocket. She gave the bartender a small smile and waved goodbye to the men at the bar before she stepped outside into the chilly February air. She smiled to herself as she pulled her coat tighter around her body and started off down the street towards her apartment. It seemed like Valentine's Day wasn't so bad after all. tbcWhile AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
