Red fox ears twitched on top of a blond head, searching for any sound that indicated that his skulk was nearby. But there was no evidence that they were even near him at this point. He had been trying to track them for at least an hour now. He cursed himself because he had gotten distracted by the snow and started to play in it like a kit. But the snow was falling heavier now and while he knew he wouldn’t freeze to death, he still needed shelter to hide from the hunters that were always after his hide.

He let out a series of yips, hoping to at least get a response from that. But there was no answer, sighing the blond glanced up into the dark sky and knew that the storm wouldn’t pass for another few hours. Yanking his coat closer over his body he scanned the surrounding area for any signs of a shelter. He sighed in relief as he found a small cave just a few yards away, the entrance almost hidden by bushes.

He quickly moved to the cave, wanting to claim it before any other animal did. Before he entered it though, he sniffed the air and was glad that there were no other scents coming from inside, it would have been a disaster if he had woken a hibernating bear. He quickly tore some limbs of the bushes and hurried inside the cave. It was certainly warmer in the cave as it should have been. The blond fox had grown up around caves and always loved to play in them. His mother had tried to break him of the habit multiple times but had died before she could do so.

His ears drooped as he thought of his mother’s death. He was still a kit when the hunters had killed his mother while she protected him. The other members of their skulk had blamed the entire thing on him at the time and treated him horribly for something he had not understood at the time. No one had explained that the humans hunted his kind, that they had tricks that could lure him out. Everyone knew that fox kits were especially curious and would investigate anything strange they smelled.

His people were a strange kind, a hybrid of fox and human. They tended to take more after foxes in nature and so pretty much avoided human contact of any kind. It was never explained to him just why the humans hunted them, of course if you asked him, he would just simply answer their fur. It seemed that they had an abundance of it with their long tails, big ears, and their feet of course.

The only part of his species that was human were his head, torso, arms, groin and the beginning of his legs. He found it strange that they were more fox than man. He at least thought that the humans would communicate with his kind since they had known the human language. The former skulk, Hiruzen, had made sure that every member had learned human speech so that if they were ever captured, they could at least communicate with the humans. But it didn’t do any good, Mizuki was proof of that.

Naruto didn’t know how his life got so upside down. Hiruzen had never treated him differently after the death of his mother. He pretty much kept their relationship the same. The blond fox just didn’t know what the problem was with the other skulk members. He sighed as he began to make the fire so that he could at least be a bit warmer. Even though he was equipped to survive this sort of weather, he still like the added warmth. He remembered on very cold and wild nights, the skulk would pile together to keep each other warm. But of course after his mother had died, he was excluded.

And then Hiruzen had passed away from old age. So Naruto was estranged from the skulk even more. Though it seemed that their new leader, Kyuubi, was intent on intergrading Naruto back into the skulk life. They had been good friends since they were kits. But if the leader had lost him in this storm, it had to have been done on purpose. It hurt to know that his childhood friend had thought less of him because he had let other’s influence him. Maybe he was finally tired of Naruto hanging around and that he couldn’t get the others to accept him again. Kushina had been a bright star in the skulk. She made sure to take of everyone and could cheer people up in an instant. Everyone had looked up to her and always asked her guidance.

Naruto never knew who his father was. It seemed as though it were a taboo subject within the skulk. When he was very young he would go around and ask who his father was. But he would only receive heated glares as an answer. It made him wonder if his father had been a bad person or if he was one of those that wandered from skulk to skulk, never settling down.

The blond smiled happily as his fire started to come to life. He quickly placed his claw tipped hands over the warmth source and relaxed as some of the feeling came back to his hands. His ears twitched slightly as he heard someone approach from the outside. He quickly scurried around to where he could see the entrance, he might not have been one of the hunters but he still knew how to defend himself if needed.

Blue eyes blinked in surprise as his leader appeared in the mouth of the cave. He was sure that he would have been left behind to fend for himself out in this barren, snow riddled land or at least for dead. The large tanned body was a welcomed sight, the long red hair seemed to be weighed down by the wet snow and his clothes were dripping. But that didn’t deter Naruto as he yipped happily, tackling Kyuubi to the ground, nuzzling the strong jaw. The red head said nothing as he wrapped his arms around the smaller fox.

“Where the hell have you been?” Kyuubi growled as he righted them, pushing Naruto far enough away that he could see his face. Immediately, he began to check for any injuries on the blond fox.

“I got lost and I tried to find you, honest!” Naruto answered as his ears drooped. He may have been an adult, but there were times that Kyuubi made him feel like a kit again. But at least his leader had cared enough to come back for him.

“Moron,” Kyuubi gruffed as he pulled the other reynard closer to him. “You had me worried Naruto. And I know you had some others worried as well.”

“Really?” The blond asked as his ears perked.

“Yes, why do you think I came and found you?” A strong hand started to stroke the unruly blond locks.

Blue eyes glanced down at the floor. “I thought you had abandoned me to be honest.”

Kyuubi pulled Naruto to him harshly, “I would never abandon you! I don’t care what the others say! You’re precious to me and I won’t have you disappearing again!”

The words had his heart soaring, he had never thought that Kyuubi thought that much of him. Of course they had grown up together and the other was always looking out for him. The blond nuzzled into the strong chest and sighed contently. He was a very affectionate fox and it had been hell not to be able to receive any. So he took what comfort he could from Kyuubi.

“I’m sorry Kyuubi,” Naruto said as he pulled away from the chest and looked up into soft red eyes.

A clawed hand came to rest on his cheek. “It’s not your fault. I should have kept you by my side. I know how much you like playing in the snow. I just wish I had paid more attention.”

“It’s okay!” Naruto smiled, happy that he wasn’t abandoned on purpose. “I’m glad you didn’t abandon me!”

“Get this through your thick skull now Naruto, I will never abandon you!” Kyuubi said harshly before he took Naruto’s lips in a passionate kiss, hands sliding to cup the back of the blonds head.

Naruto melded into the kiss, not quite believing that this was happening. But it felt so good to finally be loved and not hated. He moaned as Kyuubi nipped at his lower lip and the blond couldn’t help but allow the other access. Naruto clawed at Kyuubi’s shoulders as the other pulled him further into his lap.

When they needed air, they pulled apart, resting their foreheads against one another. Kyuubi smiled as he traced the scars along Naruto’s cheek. “You belong to me now.”

Naruto only smiled and nodded in response, happy that for once in his life things seemed to be going right. He would worry about the rest of the skulk later, because right now he was content for the first time in years and he wouldn’t let anyone ruin that feeling.
