~~ Shikamaru Nara stared down the man across the desk with serious brown eyes. He didn’t want this kind of life for himself, but because his parents had racked up an incredulous debt he was forced into it. What he hadn’t expected was to be given away. The head of the Hyuuga family did not find Shikamaru in his tastes so he had sent him to his nephew as a gift. The Nara had wisely kept his mouth shut on that. He was a genius who had at least some common sense. And he only he only wished that his parents had had common sense as well. The man didn’t say anything as he perused whatever he had in his hand. The Nara had to admit, the man was beautiful with long black/brown hair and pale eyes. The man wasn’t too pale which meant he at least was outside daily. He never once looked up and Shikamaru kept standing. He knew better than to do something without being told. It was a few more minutes before the papers were put down and pale eyes landed on Shikamaru. The Nara continued to stand still. He felt like livestock at an auction. But he had gone through this situation with the head of the family, so at least he knew what to do. He made sure not to make eye contact. When the man stood up, Shikamaru followed the path of his legs. “What is your name?” The voice was a smooth baritone. “Nara Shikamaru,” was the short reply. He knew better than to state anything else. “You will look at me when you answer.” The voice was demanding and the Nara knew better than to disobey. He would work off his parents debt and then leave the country for good. He would make a better life for himself somewhere else. “That’s better. Now why exactly did my uncle send you here?” The man asked as he leaned against the desk behind him and crossed his arms. “He said he didn’t need another courtesan and sent me to you.” Again Shikamaru kept it short and sweet. “Ah. Free your hair.” Shikamaru resisted the urge to tell the guy off. He hated having his hair down. It made him feel vulnerable, especially in this setting. But he did as commanded and took the hair tie out of his hair and shook it loose in brown waves. He almost felt naked at the way the other man studied him. It was almost as if he were inspecting goods instead of a person. “I believe I’ll keep you. Your parents had a substantial debt to this family. It’ll be years before you pay it off.” The man purred as he circled Shikamaru, his eyes roaming over the other mans back. “That doesn’t bother me.” And it really didn’t. He was still young by today’s standards and he could do everything he wanted after this debt was taken of. “Really? Most people in your situation are begging to be let go. You intrigue me.” He was curious about this young man in front of him. “I am still young, after my debts are paid I can live how I choose. I am resigned to my fate for now.” Shikamaru answered honestly. “You’re honest as well. That’s a very strange quality.” Shikamaru snorted. “I know better than to beg. It will be fruitless since I know you would not grant me what I wish for.” “No wonder my uncle gave you up. He wouldn’t enjoy you very much. I will finish up here soon unless something comes up. You may wait on that couch.” The man said as he returned to his seat and looked over more paperwork. Shikamaru did as the man commanded. The other still hadn’t given him his name. The brunet decided not to waste his thoughts on the Hyuuga. Instead he inspected the office and the sparse decorations. There were no family photos and no artwork of any kind. It was almost as if he were a robot. But the Nara knew that was impossible since mankind wasn’t that technologically advanced. The door was slammed opened and two men came in dragging a third with them. The Nara stiffened, but remained quiet otherwise. He blocked out the conversation since he didn’t want to know what was going on. The less he knew, the better off he was. But he couldn’t block out the man’s plea for his life when he was drug out of the office. That sound would stay with him. “Don’t look like that. He knew the consequences of stealing from me. Come, it’s time to go home.” The Hyuuga said as he stood and cracked the bones in his back. Shikamaru stood as he was commanded and followed the man out of the office and to the elevator. No words were spoken between the employer and employees. The Nara had no idea how these people willingly worked for a crime family knowing what they did. They disgusted him. Before his parents had been murdered for their debt, Shikamaru had been accepted into a prestigious law school. His dream was to be a prosecuting attorney. But that was taken away from him since he now had ties with the mafia, it didn’t matter that was involuntary involvement. When they stepped out of the building, there was a limo already waiting for the Hyuuga. They climbed into the limo silently. The ride was silent for the most part. And Shikamaru watched the city pass by. The night lights played across the glass and created a kaleidoscope of colors. And the brunet wished that he was free to see them from the street. Soon the color from the lights faded and all that shone on the window were the lights from street lamps. Shikamaru could barely make out the shape of them and knew that they were in an upscale neighborhood, where else would a crime boss live? He only hoped that the man had a nice sized mansion and not one of biblical proportions. He could barely make out the creaking of gates, the sound muffled by being inside the limo. The driveway was long and windy, making the brunet lean towards the thought that the Hyuuga had a huge mansion. He guessed that he was better off with this Hyuuga than the older one. As the limo stopped, the door opened for Shikamaru. He stepped out and was met with another servant of the Hyuuga family. The servant greeted him and the Nara simply nodded in response. He didn’t want to make friends, he just wanted to pay off his family’s debt and get as far away from here as possible. Shikamaru looked up at the mansion and was impressed that it wasn’t as extravagant as the uncles. The Nara stiffened as the object of his thoughts stepped beside him. “I know it’s not as big as my uncles, but this is home.” The brunet didn’t say anything in response. The man made it sound as thought this mansion was just a two bedroom house. Didn’t he know that houses did come smaller than this? Shikamaru ended that thought before he voiced his question. While he would have liked to have known the answer to that question, he kept it to himself. “Come, I’ll show you where our room is.” The Hyuuga said as he moved to enter the rather large mansion. ~~ The last few weeks were interesting to say the least. Shikamaru basically had the room that he shared with the Hyuuga to himself. It seemed that his owner, for lack of better term, hardly rested. The man worked all day and most of the night. But Shikamaru didn’t know what he worked on that took up so much time. He still hadn’t gotten a first name out of the other man. By the time the Hyuuga had come into the room, the brunet was already asleep. The Nara was happy that he at least had access to the huge library, if it weren’t for that library he would have been bored out of his mind. His meager belongings had already been transported to the mansion the day that he was given to the younger Hyuuga. And he was glad for that. Shikamaru didn’t want to acknowledge that the entirety of his life could be packed away in one suitcase. It was something that had been bothering him as of late. He should be out partying with friends, not stuck in some crime boss’ mansion, locked away from the world. “If you keep frowning like that, you’ll get lines.” The voice startled Shikamaru because he had not heard anyone enter the room. “It doesn’t matter, it’s a part of life.” Shikamaru said as he marked the page that he was on. He moved from the bed and went to the Hyuuga. “Is that your answer to everything?” The Hyuuga asked as he raised an eyebrow. Shikamaru huffed. “I’d rather look natural than have plastic surgery. It looks ridiculous on a person.” “Really?” The Hyuuga asked as Shikamaru took the suit jacket off of his frame. “Yes, there is a beauty in growing old with someone you love.” The Nara said wistfully. “You desire this?” Shikamaru just smiled and took the suit jacket and placed it in the rather large closet. He didn’t answer his owner. He felt that his silence said everything for him. When he turned around and looked at the Hyuuga, the man had a look on his face that the Nara had never seen there before, confusion. “Have I ever given you my name? I can’t recall if I have,” the tone didn’t sound confused at all. “It’s Neji and you may use it when we’re in private like this.” Shikamaru was thrown for a loop on that one. The older Hyuuga had ordered him to call him ‘sir.’ This was certainly something different. “Sure, if that’s what you want.” “Of course,” Neji purred. “I hope that it won’t be any trouble for you to give me a massage.” “Not at all, I am at your disposal after all.” Shikamaru answered as he went to the attached bathroom to find the massage lotion. When Shikamaru emerged from the bathroom, Neji was already on the bed face down. The pale smooth back was bare and the Nara couldn’t help but wonder if the skin was as soft as it looked. He shook his head, because of course he would be able to touch it. But he did wonder why Neji hadn’t called for one of the masseuses to come. Surely they wouldn’t deny a Hyuuga even at this late hour. The brunet didn’t say anything as he crawled onto the bed and up to the small of Neji’s back. He settled himself there, opened the lotion, and poured it onto the back in front of him. When his hands made contact with the skin, Shikamaru wasn’t disappointed with the softness of the skin. He kneaded the muscles and was surprised to find some serious knots. Shikamaru dug his hands deeper into the muscle, wanting to get rid of the knots. From what he could feel, the tension had to have been building in them for at least a few weeks. Soon Neji’s moans filled the room letting Shikamaru know that he was doing his job well. While the brunet wasn’t an expert, he knew a thing or two. Soon, the moans died down and soft breathing spread throughout the room. Curious, Shikamaru stopped what he was doing and leaned over to look at Neji. The man was asleep, his black hair pooling under his head, tendrils spilling out from under his head. The Hyuuga looked like any other male out there with the exception that he was beautiful. Shikamaru climbed off of Neji and decided to make the man comfortable. He pulled the other man’s shoes, socks, and pants off. Shikamaru noticed that the alarm wasn’t set on the clock so he set it for the time that Neji usually woke, which was only a few hours from now. He didn’t understand how the other man kept this pace up, late nights and early mornings. But the brunet knew he would be in trouble if he didn’t set the alarm. After it was set, Shikamaru climbed back onto the large four poster bed and settled himself under the blankets, falling asleep a few moments later. ~~ Shikamaru stared in wonder at the garden around him. He didn’t know that such a thing had existed on the grounds. That is until Neji had decided to take a stroll outside and invited him along with him. The Nara wanted some fresh air since it had been awhile since he had been out of the mansion. He found himself to be more of some sort of personal maid/masseuse than a courtesan. He found it strange that Neji did not take him to bed. He found the gardens very impressive, especially the magnolia trees that lined the walkways. They were beautiful with their large light pink petals. Shikamaru enjoyed the magnolia tree more than the sakura tree. While the sakura tree was dainty and the falling petals were beautiful, the magnolia tree seemed to shout that it was stronger with the larger petals. “I see that you enjoy them,” Neji broke the silence. “Yes, they are beautiful even if they do not last long.” Shikamaru answered as he continued to study the trees. “I agree as well. My uncle insisted on sakura trees, but I rejected his idea. I can see sakura trees all over Japan and even on my way to the office. I wanted to create something of my own in my garden so I hand picked all the flowers and planted this garden with minimal help.” Shikamaru whipped his head to the Hyuuga. “You did this mostly by yourself?” “Yes when I was eighteen and took my father’s position. It was a way for me to relieve my stress and not take my anger out on anyone. But now I find myself wanting to change the garden some. Would you be willing to help?” Neji turned pale eyes on Shikamaru. The Nara only nodded his answer. He couldn’t find the words to voice his thanks. He had missed planting a garden with his mother even though she nagged a lot. But he could at least plant a few of his mother’s favorite flowers in her memory here as a sort of victory, though he would be the only one who knew it. “We can get weed some of the flowers right now, there’s still plenty of time left until sunset.” Neji said as he turned off the current path and headed to a shed that was hidden by several trees. Shikamaru followed behind him. He was surprised that the shed was so easily hidden. It was certainly a nice shed that wouldn’t have detracted the beauty from the garden. He went into the shed and saw that the only light that was filtering in was from the sun. That surprised him a lot. He figured that this shed would at least have one light bulb. “Here are some gloves,” Neji said as he thrust a pair into the brunet’s arms. “You’re gonna need them since we’ll be weeding out the roses.” “You have roses in your garden?” Shikamaru asked surprised. “Yes. I quite enjoy them actually.” Neji answered as he left the shed and shut the door behind Shikamaru. Silence fell between them as the older man led Shikamaru to the roses. The garden once again captivated him and he couldn’t believe that Neji had planned this himself. It was just so different from what he was expecting. Neji was an enigma that Shikamaru wanted to unravel. He had never been so intrigued by another person before and he only hoped that he didn’t get burned. Shikamaru stared in wonder at the roses. They weren’t what he thought they would be. He had a picture of the roses that you got from a store like Lowe’s, not wild roses. He wondered where in the world Neji had gotten something like wild roses. Of course since he was a crime boss it wasn’t that impossible. But why would he want wild roses instead of the ones that you got from the store? “There is beauty in the untamable. The only thing I do for these roses is trim them once in awhile.” Neji said as he sidled up next to Shikamaru. “Do you do that will your whole garden?” “Yes I do. I want it to feel as natural as possible. I want everything to grow as if it wasn’t touched by man.” Neji said as his pale eyes roamed the roses. “But if you’re out here trimming then that’s not growing without the touch of man. You’re defeating the purpose.” Shikamaru answered as he set his brown eyes on the Hyuuga. “Really? Then what should I do to keep my walkways clear?” Neji asked as he looked down at the Nara. “If you walk through here often then you’ll create your own trail. You won’t need to trim the roses nor any other plant. It would be natural that way.” Neji turned so that his whole body was facing Shikamaru. “I like your idea. We’ll start planting new flowers and trees tomorrow. Right now, why don’t you take a walk with me?” “Sure,” Shikamaru answered as he fought to keep a snide remark to himself. If he wanted to get out of this contract without sex, he had to remember himself and just who owned him at the moment. But it was moments like the one they just had that had the Nara thinking that there was more to Neji. “I’ve been wanting to leave the family business for some time now. But I never found a reason to before.” Neji stated casually. “I’m tired of working for my uncle you see and I’ve been lacking the proper motivation to do so.” “Why are you telling me this?” Shikamaru asked as his eyes stayed forward. “Because I think I’ve found my reason. You’re the first person who has ever been honest with me. I know we haven’t spent that much time together, but that’s because I don’t want you to feel obligated to be around me.” Shikamaru blinked. “So what? You want to leave this life because of me? Why?” “I’ve already told you. I want to get to you know outside of the influence of this life. So right now, I’m setting you free and giving you a decent amount of money to leave this area.” Shikamaru’s brain couldn’t come up with a response to that. This man was setting him free even though his parents debt wasn’t paid? He didn’t want to believe what the Hyuuga was saying was true. It had to be some sort of trick. What kind of crime boss would just let someone go like that? Especially with the amount of money his parents had owed. “I’m serious about this Shikamaru.” Neji said as he raised a hand to tenderly touch a lock of chestnut hair. “I want to see if we will work outside of this environment. I want a normal life, not this life of killing and smuggling.” The Nara stood still. It really did sound as though Neji were really serious about this. “You’re really just going to let me walk away? With money no less? Excuse me if I don’t believe you.” Neji smiled sadly. “I’m very serious. I’m almost done with what I need to do to be free of this accursed life.” Shikamaru sighed. “When do you want me to leave?” “Tomorrow morning. I’ll have a car take you to a city far beyond my uncles reach. There’s a good college there as well so you might want to look into it.” Neji said as he dropped the lock of hair and motioned for the other man to follow him. “I’m giving you enough money to last you until you find a job. There’s already an apartment set up for as well. I’ve paid the rent on it for the first five months.” “Why?” “Because you said you were resigned to your fate of being a courtesan. It was almost as if you were giving up for the time being. I didn’t like that very well.” “So you let me go and then what?” “I’ll be leaving my family and moving in near you. I want to pursue you not as a member of the mafia, but as a normal man.” “Won’t you miss this garden that you worked so hard on?” “Yes, but there are better things in life.” ~~ Shikamaru threw his backpack onto the couch as he entered the apartment. It had been a month since Neji had let him go and the Nara couldn’t get the other man off his mind. That night in the garden had changed the Nara’s perception of the Hyuuga completely. While in Suna, he had made some new friends and even gotten a job at the local coffee house. The community college nearby was a decent one and Shikamaru hoped to enroll in the fall semester. He had been having trouble getting some of his old records from high school. But he had cleared it with the school that he was indeed still alive and kicking. But as he still had a few months to enroll, so Shikamaru just enjoyed what he had. He never knew if his freedom was to be taken away. He had been following the news as of late and it seemed that the Hyuuga family was betrayed from within. The Nara found himself hoping that it was Neji who had turned them in and not someone from within. At least if Neji had, he would have been able to cut a deal. It was still day outside and Shikamaru decided that he might as well go to the park. At least outside he could concentrate and not think of how Neji had graciously given him this apartment and the ridiculous amount of money he had in a bank account. The Nara picked up a book from his coffee table as he made his back out of the apartment and walked the short distance to the park. He could see it from his apartment bedroom. And for some odd reason it made him happy. He guessed because he could associate it with Neji. Shikamaru found a bench and sat down, opening the book to the last page he was on. He read the book with a nice breeze that ruffled his hair. He found that annoying, but there was nothing that could be done about it. His hair was already in a ponytail and he couldn’t control anymore than that. He could hear the children by the swings and the mother’s idle chatter as he continued to read. It was a nice environment with the right amount of background noise. The perfect place to read a book. The brunet was a few chapters in when a shadow blocked the writing on the pages. He looked up, an annoyed expression already written on his face. “Do you mind? I’m trying to read here.” “My apologies, but I couldn’t help but want to introduce myself,” a familiar answered. Shikamaru closed his book as he took in the face of the intruder. Surprise took over his face and then melted into a smile. “I’m sorry to be so rude. I’m Shikamaru Nara.” “Neji Hyuuga, I’m pleased to make your acquaintance. Do you mind if I sit by you?” “Of course not, go ahead.” Shikamaru answered as he scooted to the side to make room for the other man. “I’m new in town and I’m afraid I don’t know anyone. Would you mind showing me around sometime?” Neji asked as he offered a smile to Shikamaru. The Nara couldn’t help the relief and joy that swelled up within him. Neji had been telling the truth about starting anew and he couldn’t wait to see what their future held. “Of course not. I know this great coffee house down the street.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
