Sakura paced the top of the fence along Training Ground Three. It shouldn't be this damned hard to ask for something, but she was having an impossible time of it, figuring out how to approach him.
Hi, Kakashi, I need some special training. Let's... Sakura shook her head. She started over and over again, tossing each subsequent idea out faster than the last one.
She was so absorbed in her thinking, that she didn't notice him standing there. She reached the end of the fence and turned to start back. It wasn't until she was half way through that she realized he was standing there, watching her.
"Problem, Sakura?" Kakashi's mild voice finally got through.
Sakura nearly jumped. The exact person she needed to see was the last one she was ready to see. She cleared her throat. "Hello, Kakashi-sensei. How are you?" She blushed profusely, which only caused his eyebrow to go higher.
"I'm fine. And you?" His voice clearly stated he knew the answer already.
"Um, well, actually." She sighed and jumped down from the top of the fence. She sat on the low stone wall that ran in front of the fence and glanced up at him. "I need to ask you something."
"Okay, why is this so hard? I didn't think I was that hard to talk to."
"Erm, well, it's not the fact that I'm talking to you, really. It's what it's about." She figured by now that her face was probably as red as her shirt.
Kakashi on the wall next to her. "Okay," he said carefully.
She sighed. "I need some help with some training."
Kakashi's eyebrow went up again. "Okay."
"Um, it's a specific type of training." Sakura was hoping somewhere along the line, he'd pick it up without her actually having to spell it out. Tsunade had told her he knew about it, had even trained someone once, though she didn't want to think about that.
Kakashi nodded. "Okay. What kind of training?"
Sakura closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. She prayed for inspiration. "Specialized Kunoichi Training."
"Ah." There was a world of understanding and meaning behind that sound. Kakashi cleared his throat. "Is... there a reason you need this type of training?"
Sakura sent up a prayer of thanks. "I'm being sent on a mission that will require it. I have one week to learn what I need to know and be ready."
"Isn't there someone else who can go?" He asked mildly.
Sakura stared at him. Of all the things she expected, that wasn't it. "Actually, no. Why?"
But he didn't give an answer to that. "You mean there's no one else who could do it?"
"No. Look, Kurenai can't leave Asumaru long enough, Anko is already on a mission, Ino's due to give birth any day, and Tenten is already going. That leaves me and Hinata and Hinata is not good for it for obvious reasons." She was starting to get annoyed. "That's not the point. I asked for help in training."
Kakashi cleared his throat. "Aren't there any other kunoichi?"
"Look, if you don't want to do this, fine, just say so. There's bound to be someone who can help me. I may not be as beautiful as Kurenai or Tsunade or as built as Ino and Hinata or as sexy as Anko, but I'm not that bad, dammit." She jumped up and started to walk off.
"Who?"
"What?" She asked, turning back around.
"Who would you ask? Did Tsunade really tell you to do this?" He obviously didn't believe she did.
She sighed. "Yes, she did. In fact, she was the one who told me to talk to you. She also gave me a few other names I could consider, but for some reason, I came to you first. I don't know what I was thinking." She spun around and started walking again.
"You didn't answer the first question." His voice had changed. She couldn't tell what was behind it, but something wasn't quite calm about him.
Sakura stopped and counted to ten very slowly. "Tsunade gave me three other names. One is already involved in training someone else and I'm not sure I could go to him, anyway. Gai," she said with a shudder. "But apparently," she continued, "both Yamato and Genma are familiar with the training process. So, if you're not interested, then fine. But I have to do this." And with that, she turned once more to go in search of Yamato.
He sighed. "I'll do it."
Sakura stopped one more time, spun on her heel and marched back to him. She stabbed a finger into his chest, "I will not be a charity case. If you don't want to do this, if you can't bring yourself to help me with this, fine. Just say so. But don't do it out of pity."
Kakashi caught her hand and stared down into her face. "It wouldn't be. Sakura, you know what's involved in this, right? This isn't something to take lightly."
She sighed, pulled her hand out of his and sat back on the wall. "I know that. But put yourself in my place, Kakashi-sensei. They need a kunoichi for the mission. I'm the only one left. No, I don't have any experience with this sort of thing, but would you have me back out of my duty?"
And therein lay the rub. He knew she wouldn't - couldn't not do something that she was asked to do. If she was asked to go on a mission, regardless how distasteful it might be, she'd go. If she had to learn to do something she didn't know how to do, she'd learn it. And whether he agreed to help her or not, she'd learn it from someone else. He refused to examine the reasons for why he didn't want her to do the mission, why he didn't want her to learn from someone else. Instead, he swallowed the rest of his arguments and said simply, "no. I wouldn't. I'll train you and no, it's not out of pity."
He watched the relief pass over her face. "Thank you, Kakashi-sensei."
He thought of the irony of the honorific in that moment. Technically, he would still be her sensei for this, but this would definitely take them to a different relationship than just teacher and student. He sighed. If it didn't kill him first.
He'd insisted they go away for the training, saying they'd be less distracted and generally more comfortable. They headed to the hot spring spa a short distance from Konoha, where they checked in as husband and wife. Sakura blushed when the clerk addressed her by her fake married name, but managed to not embarrass herself too much. If only it was a simple trip with her husband.
She had no idea what to expect from this training, really. She had a vague idea of the end result, but the path from beginning to end was a complete mystery. And as they got to their room, her nerves started to kick into overdrive.
"Why don't we just go down to the springs first, hm? Might help you relax a little?"
She swallowed her nerves and nodded. She had to do something. "That sounds good."
"Okay, then. We'll meet back here in a little while?" She nodded again and nearly bolted from the room.
Once she was in the hot water, she started trying to force herself to calm down. This was ridiculous. She knew, mostly, what she was getting into. She knew she needed to do this. It wouldn't be that bad. If she knew Kakashi, and she thought she did by now, then she knew he wouldn't do anything horrible to her.
Maybe that's the problem. Inner-Sakura said. Maybe it would be really good.
Shut up. She told herself. You're not helping.
I'm not supposed to help! Inner-Sakura snickered.
Sakura sighed at herself. If she didn't get a handle on herself soon, Kakashi was going to send her right back home and get Tsunade to find someone else.
Not that she really wanted to go do something like this, but there really wasn't anyone else, and the mission couldn't be ignored. And she certainly couldn't leave Tenten to face it alone, it wasn't right. Especially if the rumors they'd heard about the place they'd be investigating were true.
Jigoku was a dance club in the red-light district of the Port City on the coast of the Land of Tea. On the surface, it was quite literally a place to drink and watch exotic dancers on stage or on the tables. That was about it.
On the surface. But the rumors were that the first floor of the club was only the metaphorical tip of the iceberg. It was suspected that the club ran several levels underground and as the clients descended, the depravity of their tastes got worse and worse. Furthermore, it was also said that the daimyo, local feudal lord and police force basically ignored it with the excuse that if the degenerates were there, they weren't on the street.
But the real clincher was that it was suspected that a rogue-nin was known to be operating it, and not just any rogue-nin. An S-rank formerly of the Leaf.
As Sakura thought through the details, she felt herself calm. What were a few butterflies over training with Kakashi when something like that existed? If this was what she had to do to help bring down an operation like that, then she could do it.
She took the last few minutes to relax the rest of her muscles, then climbed out of the spring. It was time to get to work.
