The steady sound of the shovel biting into the soft earth filled his ears. The dull eyes focused on the shallow grave he was creating. His eyes didn't dare wonder to the body gently swaddled in the white robe, 'Rokukage' splashed in red across the back. He gripped his shovel lightly as he continued to dig creating the perfect resting place for the man he killed. The sun climbed higher and higher, sweat beaded across his skin and finally he laid the shovel down. He raised his head staring at the clear sky and took a deep breath to settle his nerves before he turned to the body. He moved closer until he was able to lift it from the ground. He ignored the fact it had already stiffened with death and set the body into the grave. His throat burned but he swallowed the feeling away as he picked up his shovel once more and tossed the first bit of dirt onto the body. It splashed across the white robe, his eyes squeeze shut again but he shoved the pain away and slowly the body he placed in the grave disappeared. By the time the sun was setting he had placed the small head stone at the top of the grave having carved away a name on it. The man frowned as he squatted down in front of headstone his fingers grazing over the name gently. He could feel the barely contained pain burning at the back of his throat. He refused to let it show though. Refused to think that he hadn't been able to save him.
"It wasn't your fault" A voice whispered, almost like it was carried by the breeze. Naruto let out a mirthless chuckle.
"It was. I could have saved him.Could have done.something" His voice was scratchy and hoarse. Thick with the emotion he wouldn't dare show. His fingers paused to brush away the newly turned dirt.
"Like what?" It was almost a derisive comment. Naruto squeezed his eyes shut a second and shook his head.
"I..I don't know. Something. I could have done something. I should have trained harder..I should have been faster.."
"Should have. Could have. What's done is done."
"It should have been me damn it!" His voice snarled and his head lifted as he glared across the clearing. The lack of other grave markings indicating it was a secret place far away from prying eyes. The wind seemed to quiet as if contemplating his words.
"You have a village to protect." The voice was quiet. Gentle. The memory of a touch on his shoulder had Naruto collapsing forward on his knees.
"Then why does it feel like I made the wrong choice" He could feel the warm moisture on his cheeks, but in the solitude of the woods he couldn't give a damn. The heat spread and burned from his chest to his very veins. He was so angry and so hurt. It wouldn't leave him no matter how hard he tried.
"You didn't make the wrong choice."
"It shouldn't feel like this if I did! I shouldn't feel so...so..." He couldn't even describe what he shouldn't be feeling. Red and golds filled the woods from the lowering sun and the gentle breeze rustled the branches and leaves. The warmth shifted behind him and at the touch of that hand his shoulders sagged forward.
"Weak." The voice stated almost kindly. Naruto shook his head fingers grazing over the name again.
"Yeah. Weak.." He whispered in agreement finally while taking in a few desperate breaths to calm down. He had held back all this time but now he just couldn't. He couldn't put on that strong face. Couldn't put on that act in front of him, because he knew whenever Naruto was bluffing.
"You're not weak" Came the next statement. "You believed..."
"I believed I could make a damn difference! And look where that got me!!" Naruto shouted back enraged now. The wind picked up around him, the sounds of the branches and leaves rubbing together above him only getting louder before it settled back into the forests silence.
"The most power nin, the ability to control your demon..." The whisper rattled off almost dryly around him. Naruto took a sharp breath.
"Why the hell does that matter now?! How could that matter! When the only reason that is good for..is killing..Damn it!" His fist slammed down into the soft dirt next to the small headstone. He couldn't stop that pain that flooded his system now that the gates were open.
"One man's life isn't worth the life of your villagers or anyone else's village. You had to do it. For the greater good." It reasoned out loud.
"I know! I know that! You don't think I don't understand that Sasuke?!" Narutos head shot up and he whipped around kunai getting thrown back. He heard the familiar thunk thunk as the kunais landed in the tree a few meters behind him. Nothing else. He heaved a breath sinking back down to the ground next to the headstone that he had carved himself after he had been granted permission to bury the body. He didn't deserve the title he was granted. He didn't deserve the recognition. He couldn't even bring one friend back. His thumb traced the 'S' out on the head stone, the soft wind tossed his blond locks and the tears flowed freely down his cheeks. The light pressure was on the back of his neck again. It made his skin prickle,
"I always loved you." The voice was as clear as day. It wasn't disembodied on the wind or another figment of his imagination. Naruto choked and lifted his head but the pressure was gone.
"S-Sasuke.."

A pair of eyes silently closed before the body turned. He disappeared between the flitting rays of light coming down between the trees. Maybe not this lifetime..maybe another. Maybe never. They had been given their chance and had squandered it.
"I'm sorry Naruto." He whispered, the tomas spinning briefly before they settled to muted obsidian. The figure disappeared into the shadows created as the sun dipped below the horizon.

AN:Reviews always welcome..Im considering putting up another chapter..maybe? Because there's two ways i can take this..not sure what I want to do. Any thoughts would be great!!
1) I can push this to the future..reincarnation..something like that
2)Where Naruto figures out the body he buried was a fake...
Been playing with both...maybe I should write the next chapter from each and put it up and see what you think??
