Tsunade scanned the room while she considered how to begin. Anko was lounging in the one upholstered chair she had in the office, looking singularly unconcerned. Tsunade guessed she probably wasn’t concerned. She’s been around too much for something like this to bother her.
In contrast, on the other side of the door stood Kurenai, and though she never seemed to show much in strong emotion, those that knew her could see the anger bubbling in her eyes and in the finest of white lines around her mouth.
Shizune had taken up her normal post at Tsunade’s elbow, Ton-ton in her arms. Sighing, she let her eyes travel over the five young kunoichi lined up in front of her desk. Temari was visiting once again from Suna, her fan slung on her back. She looked merely curious. Sakura next to her, still in her medic garb looked concerned, but distracted. Undoubtedly, her mind was on her last patient or an upcoming procedure.
Tenten was next, not exactly bouncing on the balls of her feet, but she was obviously itching to get back to her training. She’d been summoned from the training field a short time earlier. Ino still had her apron on from her parent’s shop and her hair was not completely neat, for once, having run when the summon had been issued.
On the end, the quietest of them stood at attention. Her hands were clasped in front of her, but where once her purple-black hair would have covered her face as she bowed her head, it was back, over her shoulders and her gaze was level as she waited for Tsunade to start.
She could delay it no further. “Undoubtedly, you are wondering why you are here… or, rather, why only you are here and not your normal teammates.” She paused and took a sip of the water on her desk. She made a face, wishing desperately for some sake, but turned back to the women, shoving the wish to the back of her mind.
They were women. She had no idea when it had happened, but each of the ninja in front of her was very much grown up. Gone was the baby fat in their faces, the soft roundness that comes with younger children. These adult women in front of her had the minor etchings in their faces that comes with the experience of putting your life on the line for your country.
“I received intel a short while ago that there is a group of rogue ninja causing some nasty problems along the borders of the River Country. This, in itself is not usually reason to be called into my office, as you know.” Here she paused, wishing again for the sake. Meeting first one woman’s eye, then the next, she took a breath. “They are targeting women.” The chorus of gasps and growls had her fighting a smile. “Every kunoichi knows that there may come a time where you are put in… an intimate situation to get information or to get close to a target. But there’s a difference between a mission like that and being captured by a group like this.”
She sipped again at her water and braced herself. “I’ve sent out teams this afternoon. Gai and Genma have headed two separate teams of whatever men they could find. I’m going to have to ask you to stay inside the village gates, for now.” She paused a moment, tapping one finger on the desk, letting them get their initial outrage out, then she held up a hand.
“No, it’s not fair, blah blah blah.” There was a hard edge to her voice now. “I’m well familiar with the… social life most of you don’t lead. Being a ninja doesn’t leave much room for that. As such, I am sure that if you give it a bit of thought, you’ll understand why I would like to keep you…” another outbreak and this time she stopped dancing. Her hand went up again and when the silence fell she let the anger she’d been holding in surface a bit. She started one last time, “why I would like to keep you from starting your sexual lives with rape.”
No one moved. No one said a thing. Hinata had turned a bright red much earlier, though Tsunade wasn’t sure if it was from anger or from the subject matter. Temari and Tenten were bouncing from one foot to the other, obviously wanting to go hunt them down right then. Ino was obviously angry, but, and this surprised Tsunade a bit, but she also seemed… shocked, and embarrassed?
Sakura’s eyes had dropped to the floor. The pale lines around her mouth showed her anger and Tsunade had briefly feared for her desk. Sakura’s hands were in tight fists, as were the rest of the kunoichi, but they seemed to be holding it in rather well.
“I understand your anger. Believe me when I say that Anko, Kurenai and Shizune are no less angry than you are. They are here because, if you should want to talk to someone…” she let the thought trail off. The silence in the office was deafening. She let it go another moment, then, “okay, take a couple of days off. As soon as I know anything, I’ll let you know and we’ll resume normal missions.”
They women knew a dismissal when they heard one. One by one, they filed out of the office silently, each lost in their own thoughts. The tension was finally broken by Ino. “Okay, well, if we can’t work, how about we hit the bar tonight? Who’s in?” She was already untying her apron.
The “me’s” that followed had her grinning. “Okay, how about an hour?”
“That early? I have to be at the hospital until-” Sakura was interrupted as the door swung open.
“No you don’t!” Tsunade called as Shizune stepped out. “Go have fun! That’s an order, apprentice!”
Sakura sighed, but there was a gleam in her eye. “Okay, then. An hour.”
Temari giggled, “it doesn’t take me that long to get ready to get drunk! But I’ll meet you guys in an hour.”
With full agreement, they each went their own way to get ready.

Half an hour later, Tsunade was finally sipping on her sake. She’d signed enough papers for the day to make Shizune happy and so was enjoying some quiet time. She contemplated the lottery numbers in front of her and saw that she’d won a small part of yesterday’s pot. She snorted to herself. If she’d checked this sooner she’d have known something was going to happen. She set the tickets aside and took another drink of her sake before acknowledging the ninja on the window ledge.
“You know, I do have a door. Right?” She finished the cup, set it on her desk and spun in her chair.
Kakashi stowed the latest copy of Icha Icha and slipped into the room. His one eye crinkled over his mask. “Of course I do. I prefer the window.” He leaned negligently against the edge of her desk.
“Well?” She prompted.
“No more sightings aside from what the ANBU found earlier. They’re still skulking somewhere along the border to the River Country, but they seem to be missing a member. No evidence of where he went. I’ll head out and look some more after I get a shower.”
“Not so fast. I have another mission for you. I sent Gai and Genma out earlier with the guys. Naruto, Sai, Kiba, and Shino went with them. Shikamaru was conspicuously absent, as were Chouji and Lee. And Neji was caught up with some sort of business with his Uncle. I still prefer not to push the Hyuuga.” She shuddered and downed another swallow of sake. “ I want you to keep an eye on the girls.”
Kakashi’s one eyebrow shot up. “You want me to… what?”
“I’ve grounded them. They’re off for a couple of days to give Gai and Genma’s teams time to find the nin. I want you to watch over them. Follow them. Keep them from doing anything stupid.”
Kakashi stared at her for another few seconds, then shrugged. “Okay. But, how am I supposed to watch all of them?”
“That’s for you to figure out. But I’m sure if you looked around a bit, you’ll find our absent nin might be willing to help.” She snickered. “That’s all. You’ll find the girls at the bar in about half an hour.”
And with that he was gone in a puff of smoke. No, Kakashi couldn’t do anything normally.
