Just One Look
Her childhood had been filled with her mother reciting tales and legends of incredible female ninjas who had earned a place in history amongst many other males. It was those stories swirling around her young mind which had inspired TenTen to follow the life of a kunoichi. Throughout the years, she developed a particular admiration for a woman named Tsunade, one of the three legendary ninja of Konoha and the person responsible for saving many lives through the introduction of medically trained ninja within the squads.
She had collected all the scrolls and pictures she could and hung them proudly on her walls to serve as inspiration. Tsunade-sama was so powerful and very smart too. TenTen had once looked inside one of the medical scrolls which doctors and nurses were required to study and had closed it feeling dizzy and confused.
Tsunade-sama was also very pretty. It was the blonde hair, TenTen thought. When it caught the light it would shine brightly and went so well with the red lipstick she always wore. Then there were those eyes which were so captivating.
Temari had blonde hair too. But not golden blonde like Tsunade-sama. Her hair was more a dirty, dusky blonde. Sandy blonde was the best way TenTen could describe it, which seemed extremely fitting of a sand ninja. Like the sand, her hair was also rough. It was pulled up in four spiked tuffs as though it were the only thing which could be done with it.
She didn't do anything with her face. Whenever TenTen saw her, Temari's face remained as barren as the desert which surrounded her home. Of course, a female ninja had more important things to worry about than looking pretty, but TenTen liked to at least paint her lips with a cherry red lipstick. After all, Tsunade-sama was able to spare those few seconds.
But Temari had those piercing eyes. They weren't bright like Tsunade-sama's. Temari's eyes weren't like a fire. They were like a hawk. Piercing and searching; never missing the slightest detail. She had the look of a perfect predator, a thought which always made the hairs on the nape of TenTen's neck prickle and goose bumps race up her bare arms. When she caught those eyes, she felt as though she were being hypnotised by a snake. She knew those eyes were dangerous and to be pulled into them too much could mean her downfall, but still found she couldn't do much about it.
She would try to avoid Temari. But it was becoming custom for ninjas from other villages to socialise to keep the peace, yet also to test their strength against each other. The elders would often share drinks together, while the younger ninjas would partake in friendly battles. Following the death of the fifth Hokage, Tsunade-sama had worked hard to make sure that the hidden leaf village would socialise with the sand village whenever the occasion came. So TenTen felt obliged to join in with such socialising, because she had every faith that Tsunade-sama knew what she was doing.
Besides, Temari was at least more sociable than her youngest brother.
And, somehow, the thought of facing that ensnaring gaze was exciting. It brought the feeling of challenge and that perhaps this time she could look the beast in the eye and not get caught in the web.
For years, she never quite managed, but her burning desire to keep trying wouldn't calm itself.
As she got older and was permitted sake, she always refused it when she knew she would be mingling with the ninjas from Suna. The last thing she wanted was to be even slightly under the influence when she faced those eyes again.
Still she tried and still she failed. Sometimes she would walk home, with a few bruises and cuts gained from friendly battles, and wonder if she would ever be able to break the habit of becoming trapped so easily. Then she would meet with her team the next day and Lee's enthusiasm would bring her confidence back.
Then the cycle was momentarily broken. Not by TenTen, as much as she would have liked to be the one to do so by looking into those eyes and not feeling that squeeze on her chest. It was surprising to her that Temari was the one to take that further step.
The night was quickly growing darker, but the streets of Konoha were still well lit. Besides, TenTen's skills as a female ninja and excellence in her aim gave her no cause for worry. As she walked back swiftly, keen to put something on the scratches she had obtained during a friendly match against some ninjas from Suna who had been visiting during the day, her attention was caught by a rustling in the trees. There was a light breeze, which had been causing the soft noise while she walked home, but that particular rustle was somewhat louder.
As though the leaves were being brushed by feet.
TenTen grabbed some kunai from the pouch which was always strapped to her thigh and turned to launch them towards whoever the sneak was. But she was still in time to stop herself when she recognised the shape crouching in the branches which loomed over the pathway.
Temari raised an eyebrow. "Not going to finish what you started?"
TenTen frowned as she replaced her kunai back in the pouch. "Knocking you out for a few hours may undo all the hard work Tsunade-sama has done to unite the villages."
"I wasn't talking about that," Temari said with an amused smile. She stroked a finger down the side of her folded fan, which was propped beside her. "Not that you would've been able to. I mean the way you keep looking at me."
For a moment, TenTen's mouth just hung open in shock and surprise. Then she managed to move her jaw silently up and down before finally spluttering; "w-wh-what?!"
"You heard me," Temari said, tilting her chin up. "I see the way your eyes can't leave mine when they meet, how they stay there when I look away and how your chest rises in a different way."
"I never did anything of the sort!"
"You don't sound so sure."
TenTen's frown darkened. "Whatever you think happened, it won't again. I need to get back now. Goodnight."
Without waiting for another word, TenTen turned on her heel and continued walking as quickly as she could down the path. She gritted her teeth as she felt her cheeks heat up and hoped they hadn't been doing so when she had been facing Temari.
That sensation grew larger when she heard Temari say; "playing hard to get huh?"
Then the leaves rustled loudly again and TenTen knew she was gone.
---
Weeks kept passing and TenTen continued to throw herself into her training. She still wanted what Tsunade-same had achieved in strength and skill, even if it was only a small part of it. The scrolls and pictures she had collected over the years were now showing some slight signs of fading, but they were still the first thing TenTen saw when she opened her eyes and they were what got her up and motivated her for the day.
Motivation continued when she went to sleep, but she didn't see brown eyes, gleaming blonde hair and ruby red lips. Instead, burned into the back of her eyelids, there were teal eyes, sandy blonde hair and a barren face with a sarcastic smirk. Sometimes she kept seeing those features in her dreams, as well as maybe the flimsy clothing barrier of a fishnet vest and long slender fingers. She would wake up to find her hand clamped between her legs.
When the ninjas from Konoha and Suna socialised, TenTen would go into it with her chin high in the air. Ever since her encounter with Temari that night, her desire to defeat whatever was going on within her body was higher than ever. Since her training had first began, she had followed a strict discipline and she would be damned if it all suddenly became undone because of a pair of eyes.
For the most part, she succeeded. She caught Temari's eyes only once or twice and each time it had been purely accidental. TenTen was sure Temari was purposefully trying to do it, as though she viewed it as some sort of game.
Then, suddenly, it came to TenTen that maybe she was treating it like a game as well. Cat and mouse. She would try to avoid Temari's eyes, but when she did meet them she would hold that gaze, staring her down to see which one would break the contact first.
In a strange way, she began to think she was enjoying that part of the game.
And, ever since her encounter with Temari that night, she had noticed that there was a slightly different way in how her chest would rise and fall when she met those eyes. And, when she did, she smiled.
Before she knew it, a year had passed since she had come a breath away from flinging her kunai at Temari; not to hit her vital points but at the very least to immobilise her. Even though she had stroked her fan in such a confident way, TenTen was so sure she could have made the hit. She knew she had developed so much as a kunoichi with the inspiration that was Tsunade-sama always in her mind, but she had the feeling that Temari still saw her as the girl she had defeated so easily at the Chunin Exams all those years ago.
Perhaps it was the strange anniversary of events which caused her to become more cautious as she walked home, her path lit up with paper lamps and the warm light which spilled out through the gaps in people's curtains. She listened out for a distinctive rustle in the branches hanging above her, but heard nothing.
And felt disappointed. She enjoyed the challenge Temari presented. She even went as far as to wonder if she enjoyed those times when Temari would be invited into Konoha on a level which went beyond knowing that such visits meant Tsunade-sama's plans to unite the villages were still going well.
She reached a building, which had no particularly interesting features and blended into Konoha's streets. Letting herself in, TenTen allowed herself to relax her step and trudged up the stairs to the fifth floor, where the third door down the left side of the hallway would be the one which led into her apartment.
Her curtains were still pushed back and the window was partly open because she liked the room to let in some light and air while she was out. The first thing her eyes fell upon as she looked out of that window was the tree which took up most of the view.
Kicking off her sandals, she rolled her head from side to side, trying to loosen up her muscles. She reached up and had undone three buttons of her top when suddenly she grabbed a kunai out of the pouch strapped to her leg and threw it with perfect accuracy through the gap of the open window.
It hit the tree with a thud.
"That's a warning shot," she said, glaring out of the window at the tree. "Stop coming here."
"Oh? In that case, I'm curious," Temari said as she emerged from some of the shadows. "If you knew I've been coming here before, why didn't you do anything?"
TenTen said nothing; she just kept her hardened glare upon Temari. She reassured herself that her facial expression and body posture were still and challenging. But inside her heart was racing.
Temari snorted and reached out a foot to hook it under the partly open window. She pulled it open a little more and let herself in. As she did, TenTen stepped back and Temari set her fan down to lean it against the wall.
"See, no harm intended," she said, holding up her hands. "Besides, I'd hate to wreck the work of your precious Tsunade-sama." Temari's eyes swept the room and appeared to note, with amusement, the images of the fifth Hokage of Konoha upon the wall. "So you can take your hand away from your leg."
TenTen did so, while asking; "what business do you have here? Your fellows will wonder after you."
"What business you ask," Temari laughed, stepping forward one pace. "Finishing business. Just like I've given you the opportunity to do for the past year."
"Finishing business huh?" TenTen took a pace forward.
"Hope you don't play dumb," Temari said, stepping forward again. "It doesn't become you."
"No." TenTen mimicked the gesture again. "I'm going to win this."
Temari smiled and took another pace forward. "Life is a battleground, eh? My kind of philosophy."
TenTen's final step brought them almost nose to nose.
Life was a battleground. And one side always had to take the first step.
TenTen could feel proud of herself that she had been the one to take that step. She reached out to snag the material which hung below Temari's collarbone and yank her forward. Their lips connected and as soon as they did their mouths opened and the battle was momentarily restricted to their tongues. They pushed and slipped against each other, scraping against teeth as they did so. TenTen pushed herself forward to nip Temari's lips, drawing out a low hiss.
That bite provoked some movement. Temari moved her hands from where they had still been held up in the air as a peace offering, dipping them down then pushing them up between TenTen's arms which were still clutching her clothing. Her fingers fumbled for a moment as they had to search the top without eyesight to guide them, then they slid over the buttons which still remained done up. She slipped them open one by one, sliding her fingers down lower over TenTen's chest and stomach as she did. As she unhooked the last one, TenTen shrugged and wriggled her shoulders, causing her top to slip down and fall around her bent elbows. One of her hands let go of Temari's clothing to hook her arms around the back of her neck and pull her closer to push her tongue deeper into her mouth.
Temari just drifted her fingertips over TenTen's exposed stomach for a moment, causing the sensitive nerves to pulse ever so slightly as they were provoked. She allowed TenTen to push herself as close against her as she could and slip one hand up her top, then underneath the elastic of her fishnet bra. TenTen deepened the kiss as much as she could and felt her lip gloss smear against Temari's mouth.
Just as TenTen started to suck on Temari's tongue, she felt the hand upon her stomach slide down past her waistband. Temari reached straight down for between her legs, snaking her fingers down, then bending them up to push hard against her panties. TenTen's body jumped as she gasped and then the contact between their mouths was broken. She was panting, mostly due to lack of breath after keeping their lips together for so long and Temari allowed her those few seconds to gather herself before she smirked.
"Didn't think it would be that easy did you?"
TenTen smiled back, unhooking her arm from around Temari's neck to allow her top to slip past her elbow and over her fingers so it only hung off one arm. "No."
She brought up her free arm and clutched Temari's clothing again. This time she gripped at her top near the bottom and began to yank it up. To her surprise, Temari withdrew her hand from her trousers to lift her arms and allow her top to be pulled up and off. There was a soft thud as it hit the floor and as soon as it did Temari's hand was back, unhooking the button of TenTen's trousers and dipping her hand back down.
As her fingers pressed against her panties once more, TenTen gasped again and pressed their bodies together, grabbing and squeezing Temari's left breast as she did. She stumbled back, dragging the Suna ninja along as she did. They tumbled downwards as the back of TenTen's knees hit the side of her bed, narrowly avoiding striking their heads against the wall and lay at an angle on top of the sheets. Their legs dangled over the edge and their toes pressed against the floor.
Temari dipped her head down to TenTen's neck, scraping her teeth along the flesh, then running her tongue back up over the small red marks she had created. As TenTen whined and wrapped her free arm around Temari's shoulders, digging her fingernails into her back, the Suna kunoichi took her fingers away from where they pressed against her panties for a moment. She hooked her fingers around the elastic waistband and pulled it down as far as she could.
Her fingers slipped into TenTen, who spread her thighs as wide as her trousers would allow her. She moved her legs back and fourth for a moment, trying to push the material further down, then was suddenly reminded of the battle she so wanted to win.
She dug her fingernails into the flesh beneath them and raised her knee up against the shorts Temari wore and pushed it up between her legs. TenTen rubbed her knee back and forth between Temari's legs and felt the nipple between her fingers harden.
Temari's words suddenly echoed in her ear; "you didn't think it would be that easy, did you?"
Because Temari's fingers pushed deeper inside her, moving in circles and rubbing hard. It made TenTen arch her back up and grip Temari harder. It made her squeeze her breast tightly and push her knee up and rub as much as she could.
Her world was becoming a haze of so many things. Her body was jolting, her hips thrusting and her limbs moving with an ever-furious pace. Her teeth were chewing feverously at her bottom lip as her fingers scrabbled and gripped at the flesh they pressed against. Her heart was racing, trying to keep up with the swirling emotions of fierce pleasure and the desire to keep up the fight.

The kunai that TenTen had thrown was still embedded in the tree trunk the next morning. Attached to it was a note which read; better luck next time.
