Kakashi felt his heart stutter and slow down. This was it; it was time for the new generation to take over. He had faith in them; the will of fire burned brightly in the youth’s of Konoha…The village was in safe hands. He closed his eyes, feeling really tired. Images flashed before closed and bruised eyelids…he saw his mother and father, Minato sensei, Obito and Rin followed by Sakura, Sasuke and lastly Naruto. He felt sad that he wouldn’t be able to be there the day Naruto took his place as Hokage, he had no doubt that the blond would make it, it was his destiny.
Feeling comfortable that his beloved village were in capable hands Hatake Kakashi drew one last shuddering breath, then his head fell down against a trapped broken body and the famous copy nin of Konoha died.
*******
Kakashi opened his eyes to see a pale blue sky in between green healthy leaves. He was lying on a soft carpet of emerald colored moss and he felt as if he didn’t have a care in the world. The enticing smell of baked bread invaded his nostrils and he slowly rose to a sitting position. A fire was crackling merrily and a white haired male sat by it tending the buns baking in the pan over the fire. The man turned his tattooed face towards Kakashi and grinned.
“About time you woke up boy.” Jiraiya said gruffly as he tended the buns. “Breakfast will soon be ready, Minato is picking berries with Obito and Rin and they’ll be back soon. After we have eaten we’ll head out. We got a lot of researching to do for my next Icha Icha book. Are you game?” Jiraiya said with a wide smile on his face.
Kakashi grinned back and rose up to join the other man by the fire, running his hand through silver locks as he went. Breakfast with his best friends and then out researching (perving) with his favorite author…yeah life was good…

"Do something!" Naruto screamed at the pink haired kunoichi who was bent over their former sensei's body trying to heal wounds that were unnecessary to heal. Kakashi was dead but Naruto wouldn't accept it. She could feel the sting of tears welling up in her eyes. Two vital organs had been damaged beyond repair. All the copy nin's chakra channels had collapsed and not only had he depleted his chakra, his chakra reserves were completely dry. He wasn't going to get up, he wasn't going to make one of his lame excuses for being late anymore. He wasn't going to smile and laugh at Naruto's antics. He was gone.
Sakura let a soft sob escape her throat as the tears from her eyes landed on her former sensei's chest with a soft pat, pat, pat.
"S-Sakura-chan?" Naruto's voice had become surprisingly soft, a hint of worry and concern laced his tone.
"I...He's..." The kunoichi couldn't hold back the loud sob that escaped her lips.
"No..." was the whisper from the young Kyuubi vessal. He glanced down at the immobile and pale body of his former sensei, "Kakashi-sensei..."
Ever since he had been assigned to Team 7, he thought the copy nin was invincible. That he could do anything. That he was incapable of dying. But here he was bold as brass, cold as ice, and paler than the full moon. He was dead.
And he never got to tell him. Never got to ask if what he meant that day, when he was showing the silver haired man how he had made Fuuton Rasengan, was the truth or just a silly joke. Never got to tell him that he had thought about it and it didn't really bother him as much as he expressed. Never told him that, in all honesty, he was afraid to tell anyone that he was gay. That maybe they would think less of him, so he played the part of the homophobic to throw people off. Never got to tell him...that he'd been in love with him for years now. No matter how aloof, or insensitive the man was towards him. He loved him with all his heart.
And now he was gone, "Kakashi-sensei...why?" He felt his own tears start to well up in his eyes, then he felt his pain turn into anger, "Why did you go down like that?! Why didn't you fight it?! Why Kakashi-sensei?! Why?!"
Sakura was startled out of her own sorrowful reverie by the blond's sudden outburst, "Naruto..."
The Uzumaki let out a loud wail of anguish, as he lay across his former teachers dead body. He had failed yet again to save a precious person, and this one was more important to him than Sasuke or Jiriaya. This man had become his soul reason for breathing, for living. It didn't matter if the whole village, or Sasuke, or even Jiriaya hated him or not. His world revolved around the copy nin, whether Kakashi knew it or not. And now his life was over. Naruto had died when Kakashi had taken his last breath.

Kakashi lay by the small stream, listening to it bubbling like a melody on its way to the sea. The air was filled with the scents of the forest and wild herbs and it felt easy to breathe. He turned his head a little to the side and watched Minato stare expectantly at his fishing pole placed in the clear water of the stream. The man’s blond hair shone in the gentle sunlight and his blue eyes were alight with glee. Sometimes when Kakashi looked at him he could almost see someone else, someone who touched his mind like the soft touch of a butterfly’s wings but whenever he tried to grab on to that image and make it clearer it was gone. He figured it was just a trick of his mind, some sort of twisted déjà vu.
“You know that no fish are going to bite don’t you?” Kakashi chucked. “I mean you don’t even have any bait.”
The blond man turned towards him and smiled and again Kakashi felt that tiny pang in his heart, he shook it off and returned his friends smile. “I know Kashi, but it’s the experience that counts not getting fish, besides I don’t need bait, I’ll win them over with my charm.”
Kakashi snorted and went back to watch the white fluffy clouds chase over the blue sky. This was all he needed. A place to take it easy, a warm breeze on his skin and one of his precious people beside him, this was all it took for him to be happy with life. Suddenly he heard splashing beside him, he looked over and saw Minato hauling a large fish with rainbow shimmering scales out of the water. The blond was grinning triumphantly. “See I told you, I won them over with my charm.”
Kakashi burst out laughing, a real laugh that started all the way down in his stomach. “Whatever ‘Nato, just make sure I don’t have to cook it and we’re golden.”
Minato looked at the lazy silver haired man sprawled on the ground. “I would never ruin my nice catch by having you cook it.” The blond snickered. “You can’t cook to save your life.”
“Ah but you all love me anyway.” Kakashi answered in a drawl and blew the other man a kiss.
“Hm, sometimes I wonder why.” Minato said as he cleaned the fish out. The silence of the clearing was broken by voices coming nearer. “Here comes the cavalry,” Minato said. “I wonder how Jiraiya will feel about cooking fish today.”
Kakashi rolled over on the soft ground and started to get up. “If he’s stubborn we'll get Asuma to do it, he can sweet talk anyone.”
Kakashi stood up patted Minato on his shoulder and waited for the rest of his friends to get to camp. A fox ran out of the forest on the other side of the stream and Kakashi was captivated by the red animal. His grey eyes met golden and for a moment everything around him disappeared. The animal turned on its tail and went back to the deep green of the forest but Kakashi stood there looking at the spot where it had been for a long time.

Sakura walked down the main street of Konoha carrying a bag of ramen take out from Ichiraku's. It had been nearly a month since Kakashi had died, nearly 3 weeks since they buried him. All the man had left behind was the plant, Mr. Ukki, that Naruto had given the teacher and his set of Icha Icha books. Naruto had gotten the plant back and the books...well...Sakura kept them for a time when Naruto was dealing with the mans death better. Which was probably not going to be anytime soon.
In fact it may be never. Naruto had never taken someones death this bad. Not even Jiriaya's. After the funeral, Naruto had holed himself up in his apartment, only coming out when he absolutely needed to. When he went on missions, his fighting was only half-hearted, even Yamato-taichou and Sai seemed to notice. Like going through the motions. It was like Naruto's fervor for life had suddenly dissipated into thin air.
He had even been promoted to jounin, skipping over chuunin, for the huge role he played in defending the village against Pein. He had even killed the Akatsuki leader. Sakura thought Naruto would have been happy that he was just that much closer to becoming the Hokage. But no, it wasn't enough. Kakashi's death truly killed the fighter inside of Naruto.
Warm chocolate colored eyes watched the young woman hurry down the street. He saw the take out back from Ichiraku’s ramen and figured she was going to see Naruto. He walked over to her wanting to talk, to express the worry he felt for his former student who didn’t even speak to him any more.
"Sakura wait up." Iruka called out as he crossed to street to get to her.
"Iruka-sensei!" Sakura smiled softly at the brunette chuunin. Ever since the day Kakashi had died the blond, whom she was sure the brunette was worried about, hadn't spoken more than two words to him. "I was just bringing some ramen to Naruto to get him to cheer up a bit. He's still not doing too well."
Iruka looked at the pink haired woman and took a second to marvel at how mature and beautiful she had become. She had come such a long way from when she was his student at the academy. He looked into her green eyes and saw the same worry he felt for Naruto mirrored there.
"Has he spoken to you at all Sakura? About what's bothering him" The academy teacher shifted on his feet as he spoke. "I've been to his apartment several times but he won't even let me in. It hurts to see him like this, it's like all the light has gone out in him."
Emerald colored eyes turned towards the ground, "Iie...he won't talk unless he has to...and I know just how you feel. It's like he's dead inside now. He took...Kakashi-sensei's death harder than Jiriaya-sama's."
"I know that he cared for Kakashi-san but I had no idea that it went this deep." Iruka said solemnly. "He never showed anything when your sensei was alive. I thought becoming a jounin and defeating the Akatsuki would have made him happy but he's not. It's like he can't feel anything. What should we do Sakura-chan?"
The young pink haired kunoichi let out a heavy sigh, "I'm not sure Iruka-sensei. But if we don't come up with something...I don't think Naruto..." She chewed on her bottom lip in hesitation, "I don't think Naruto is going to last much longer."
A soft breeze ruffled the chuunins ponytail as he stared at the young medic nin. "Do you really think it has gone that far?" Iruka was scared of what this meant, he couldn't lose Naruto, the blond was like his little brother and he cared for him deeply. "Should we get the rest of his friends involved and have some kind of intervention? Have you talked to Hokage-sama, what does she think?"
"We could try an intervention, but I doubt it would do any good," Sakura looked at her former teacher apologetically, "All we can really do is wait, and keep doing things for him to let him know that he isn't alone and that we all still care about him." They were nearly to Naruto's apartment now...but something felt wrong to the pinkette. Something wasn't right, something had happened. But she didn't quicken her pace or hesitate. She continued on.
"I guess you are right." Iruka said quenching the pain he felt over the fact that he couldn't help the blond, that Naruto didn't want to be helped. "Do you want me to join you or would you rather meet Naruto on your own?" The chuunin thought Sakura seemed more tense than a minute ago but blamed it on the subject of conversation.
The pink haired chuunin glanced over at the brunette with a warm smile, "You miss him don't you, Sensei?" She would be grateful for the company, and she could tell that the man longed to see his 'otouto', the pain was there in his creamy brown eyes.
"I do, I miss him more than I thought was possible. I miss his optimism, his laughter and his strength. I miss our ramen dates on Thursdays when we would talk about anything and everything." The scarred chuunin sighed. "I would really like to join you Sakura-chan, maybe together we can get through to him." They had reached the stairs that led up to the blond's apartment and Iruka watched as the pinkette started to climb them.
Once they reached the door to the apartment, Sakura lifted her fist to knock and the door came slightly open. "Nani?" The pinkette's brows furrowed in confusion, "This isn't right. Naruto always locks his door." She commented as she let herself into the flat. The apartment appeared empty and dark. She quickly flipped the switch and continued into the apartment, "That's strange, I don't remember Tsunade-sama saying anything about sending him on a mission."
Iruka followed the kunoichi into the room, the air smelled heavy and dank and for some reason it made the chuunin's stomach churn. This wasn't right. Naruto always kept his place airy and fresh, even when he was away on missions and Iruka took care of his plants. It had never felt this way inside the apartment. Suddenly the chuunin felt apprehensive and he wondered if they should go further inside the place, something was definitely wrong.
Sakura carried the bag of take out ramen to the kitchen table and glanced around the room, "Maa, I'll just leave it here...though this doesn't feel right...I wonder where Naruto could be..."
Iruka looked around the small room and noticed the disarray in the usually tidy place. The flowers that Naruto always cared for were brown and dried out in their flowerpots. The bedroom door was closed tightly and the chuunin feared what could be on the other side of the door.
"Maybe we should call someone Sakura-chan, something is wrong here."
"I-I think that we should at least check and see if he's okay...at least if he's still here," Sakura's hands were visibly shaking as if she felt the same vibe that Iruka had in the apartment. But she steeled her resolve and walked towards the bedroom door, peeking in, "Che...he's not in his room..." Her brows knitted together in concern. There was only one place they hadn't checked for Naruto.
Iruka's eyes shifted to the bathroom door that was closed tightly, he slowly walked over to it and checked the handle, it wasn't locked. The chuunin braced himself and turned the knob. He slowly creaked the door open and what he saw inside that tiny bathroom had the grown man falling down on his knees in shock and despair.
In the bathtub, Naruto sat in pink tinted water. His face was no longer tanned, but pale from death. His blue eyes staring up at the ceiling were devoid of life. And dried caked blood was littered in strips across his wrists and arms.
Sakura rushed inside the bathroom to Iruka's side, but when she saw the pale form of the blond in the bathtub she shrieked from both horror and anguish at seeing her best friend like this, "NARUTO!!"
Iruka had to grab Sakura around the waist and hold her back to keep her from flinging herself over Naruto. The boy was gone, even he who had no medical training could see that there was no hope. He couldn't keep his eyes from roaming over all the red that painted the usually white bathroom. His heart was broken into a million pieces, his little brother was gone. Why, why had Naruto done this? Why hadn't Kyuubi healed him, what sort of deal had he made with the demon? Sakura's sobs wrecked her thin body and all Iruka could do was to hold her as his own tears streamed down his face.
"NARUTO!!" The pinkette sobbed out her own tears pouring from her own eyes. Neither of them saw the letter that was sitting on the dresser of his bed room. The list of reasons why he had done such a thing being held in place by the bottle of pills that were used for chakra suppressants.

Kakashi looked on in amusement as Asuma downed another cup of sake, he, Asuma and Jiraiya were playing craps and the loser had to drink. So far Asuma was as drunk as anyone could be and were minutes away from starting to strip in the little inn they were visiting. Kakashi was pleasantly buzzed but still had all his motor functions under control.
A young woman came to their table with an another bottle of sake, she was very attractive and she flirted openly with Kakashi. He thought about joining her for the night but he couldn’t do it, something held him back. A feeling that it would be wrong…He didn’t understand it since he was unattached but he couldn’t ignore the feeling.
Suddenly Asuma fell over with a blissful smile on his lips and both Kakashi and Jiraiya burst out laughing.
“I win!” Jiraiya boasted and grabbed the girl pulling her down on his knee and nuzzling her neck. Well that was good, he knew Jiraiya would keep the girl busy.
Kakashi rose from the table, just a bit unsteady on his legs and walked outside. The stars were incredibly bright and he sat down on a log and watched the night sky. It seemed endless and serene and after the noise in the inn he enjoyed the silence that wrapped around him like a blanket.
He was happy…he was! Why did he feel like something was missing? He leaned back and watched the twinkling stars above him…Did they have the answer?
"Kakashi-sensei?" A familiar voice called out from behind the man, the tone disbelieving and the sound of tears laced it. A shock of sun gold hair along with smooth tanned skin and bright cyan blue eyes rimmed with tears appeared behind the man.
Kakashi whirled around to look at the blond who had called him out, for a moment his heart stopped and his breath caught in his throat. Naruto...Naruto was there and despite the tears he was the most beautiful thing that Kakashi had ever seen. The golden skin and deep blue eyes as endless as the sky he'd admired a moment ago. Until he saw the boy he had no idea how much he'd missed him, it was like he was suddenly complete.
"Naruto...w-what are you doing here?" Kakashi took one step towards the golden vision looking at him with teary eyes.
Naruto let out a soft laugh, despite the tears rolling down his cheeks, "It doesn't matter, I'm here and we're together now." He felt his heart over whelmed with joy at seeing the man he loved again. Now they could be together. Now he could tell him what was in his heart.
Kakashi took another step towards Naruto, he wanted nothing more than to grab the younger man and hold him close to him forever...to never let him go. Still the fact remained that he didn't know if Naruto felt the same way, he had never told anyone about his feelings for the Kyuubi vessel. Kakashi reached out a suddenly trembling hand and wiped away a crystal like tear from a smooth golden cheek that was warm...real.
"Oh Naruto..." He said as his self control snapped and he enveloped the blond in his strong arms.
Naruto wrapped lithe arms around the scarecrow's waist, letting the overjoyed tears roll down his cheeks. He let out a few sobs before he was able to speak, "I thought I'd never see you again...I was so lost without you."
Kakashi was confused at the blond's words, he didn't understand them since he'd been right here but maybe it was the other who had been away...Yeah that must be the case. He marveled at how perfectly Naruto fit in his arms, like he'd been made for him to hold. The copy nin reached up and ran his hand through soft golden spikes that felt amazing under his fingers. He leaned down and breathed in Naruto's scent, it was intoxicating.
"I've missed you!" He whispered softly into the blond's ear.
"I never got to tell you..." the blond kitsune nuzzled into the silver haired man's chest breathing in his scent. "I never got to say all the things I wanted to say to you. I wanted to tell you that I love you...I'm in love with you. I don't want us to ever be separated again."
Again Kakashi's breath hitched, this was a miracle...Naruto felt the same way! He leaned down and captured the smaller man's lips with his own. They were full and soft and nothing had ever tasted so wonderful. Kakashi couldn't help but groan and hold the other tighter, afraid that this was a dream and Naruto would disappear if he didn't hold on to him tight enough.
"I love you too Naruto, don't ever leave me." The silver haired man pleaded between soft kisses.
The newly deceased blond returned the kisses, running clever tanned fingers through silver locks, "I love you so much, Kakashi."
"Maa...so this is were you are, Uzumaki," a deep gravely voice emerged from the bushes and a tall man in a black leisure suit with long deep raven hair and red eyes emerged from the thick of the brush, "I'll have to deal with Charon* when I take you to where you belong."
Kakashi's eyes widened and he pushed Naruto behind him to protect him as he made himself ready to fight. He didn't know who this man was but he wouldn't let him take Naruto from him when he finally had him in his arms where he belonged.
"I suggest you back off, go back where you came from." Kakashi hissed as he got ready to attack, he would fight to the death if that was needed to keep Naruto with him.
Naruto clung to his love, not wanting to let go. He had done something, he knew, in life that gave him a one way ticket to where he would be separated from Kakashi. He knew this because the man before him was no ordinary man...in fact, he reminded the blond of when he was taken over by Kyuubi...a demon.
The raven laughed a deep rumbling laugh, his sharp incisors clearly visible, "Foolish mortal...do you have any idea where you are and why you are here?"
Kakashi stumbled a bit at the raven's words, not really understanding but still kept Naruto behind him. He would fight for his love...his light!
"What do you mean?" He asked defiantly as the black haired man came closer. Kakashi clenched his fists and looked around for anything that he could use as a weapon. He could feel Naruto's heart beating fervently and that only made him more determined to keep his love safe.
The movement was swift that even Kakashi couldn't catch it with his Sharringan exposed. Naruto was suddenly standing next to the raven, no longer behind the copy nin. His grip on the blond boy's shoulder told Naruto, he wasn't going anywhere except where the raven took him. "You died in battle, you have lived your life giving your all to protect those you hold precious. This is your new home, the Elysian Fields*. However, this boy did not fall in battle, nor had he died of illness or any other natural causes. He committed a most heinous act...therefore, his prison is Tartarus*. Where he will spend eternity of suffering for committing his sin."
Kakashi couldn't comprehend anything the red eyed man was saying. Died? He wasn't dead...was he? And Naruto would never take his own life, the blond was much to strong for that, he was the strongest person Kakashi had ever known. This had to be some kind of trick.
"Please," He pleaded. "Please give him back to me. He is my soul." Kakashi couldn't remember that last time he's begged but he would gladly get down on his knees if he could get Naruto back. "Please..."
"Don't worry, as soon as he's gone, you'll have forgotten he had ever existed," The raven smirked, as he held Naruto closer to him, "You'll continue your existence in happiness as if you had never met him."
Naruto was close to tears, his suicide...was that what made it where he and Kakashi couldn't continue their afterlife together? Why was this happening to him? Why was fate so against his happiness?
"No!" Kakashi gasped. "I don't want to forget him, I want to be with him. If he can't stay then can I come with him? I gladly give up happiness if I can only be with him...I need Naruto."
Kakashi's eyes closed in on Naruto who stood there with a desperate look in those amazing cobalt eyes of his. "I'll go with you this instant, if we can only be together." He tore his gaze away from Naruto with difficulty and locked eyes with the raven. "What right do you have deciding over our fates?"
"I am Despair, son of Hades, god of the underworld," the raven replied the sinister smirk still in place, "By all rights, I can take him as I see fit. His name is not written in the census for the Elysian Fields, and I will not allow you to come with him. For you to come would not be a punishment for him. He is being punished. And you will remain here."
"I-I'll be okay, Kakashi..." Maybe it's better that he forgets about me and stays happy. I'll be satisfied knowing that he's alright and he wants for nothing. That will keep me warm when the nights will be cold.
Kakashi looked at Naruto again, his heart filled with emptiness when he realized that there was nothing he could do to keep Naruto with him. He didn't want to forget, a part of his soul would always be missing without the blond by his side. His eyes greedily roamed over Naruto, trying to commit every feature to memory hoping against all odds that some part of him would remember Naruto.
He looked at Despair again. "Can I kiss him one last time?" Kakashi asked in a broken defeated voice.
Despair regarded the silver haired copy nin before him, then side glanced at the blond beside him. Love, the demi-god thought to himself, A very powerful thing indeed. Surely Aphrodite had a hand in both their hearts to make them long for each other like this. "Hai, but only one last time."
Kakashi stepped forward and cupped Naruto's face in his calloused hands, he rubbed his thumbs over whiskered cheeks before leaning down to taste those soft lips. He could feel his own tears mixing with Naruto's as he deepened the kiss, tangling his tongue with Naruto's never wanting to let go. He withdrew his tongue from the blond's mouth and kissed him softly on both eyelids before whispering in his ear. "I don't care what they say...I will find you...Someday we'll be together." Kakashi stepped back with tears running from his mismatched eyes, his heart felt as if it would stop beating at any moment.
The tears in Naruto's eyes continuously flowed like small rivers as he held the copy nin's arm for a moment, his body and heart not wanting to cooperate with his mind. It was when Dispair touched his arm did he finally let go, and he mouthed the words 'I love you' before he disappeared with the raven from Kakashi's sight forever.
Rin walked through the brush searching for her friend and crush, Kakashi. She wondered where he had gotten off to, and Minato-sensei and Obito where questioning where he might have gone. She stopped short seeing the copy nin with tears pouring out of his eyes and a blank and lost look on his face, "Kakashi-kun? Why are you crying? Haven't you been enjoying yourself?"
Kakashi looked at Rin blankly before touching his fingers to his face feeling the wetness there. His head hurt and all of him felt fuzzy. "I have no idea why I'm crying Rin-chan," He turned to the girl and walked to her. "The sake must have been bad, I feel kind of sick to my stomach." He grabbed her hand. "Come on, let's go inside. I want to see if Jiraiya is still winning." He smirked at Rin and walked with her hand in hand back towards the inn and the merry music and chatter that could be heard from the small cottage.
