LAZY SUMMER DAYS
by, Rushlight
Fandom: Naruto
Pairings: quite a few (if I had to pick some, I'd say Sasuke/Naruto, Kankuro/Kiba, Naruto/Gaara, Shikamaru/Choji, and Neji/Lee)
Rating: Adults Only
Summary: A group of bored teenage ninjas look for a way to while away a hot summer afternoon.
Spoilers: through the middle of Season 6
Author's Note: I don't know whether this would be considered crackfic or fluff. ^_^ I'm not sure what prompted it, except that these boys are a ton of fun and I wanted to take them out to play. One of these days I'll get around to writing a story in this fandom that has an actual plot in it...
It was, quite possibly, the hottest summer day on record in Konoha.
Naruto squirmed and burrowed further into the nest of grass he'd found for himself by the lake's edge, trying to soak up some kind of comfort from the tree shade that spotted the clearing. Above him, the sky was an unbroken blue canvas, the white-hot circle of the sun tearing through it like a kunai blade.
It had been ages since he'd last been given a mission. Apparently it wasn't just Konoha that was wilting under the intense heat of the season; the surrounding countries were also suffering. In this kind of unbearable heat, apparently no one had the energy to do anything other than closet themselves away indoors. Calls for a ninja's talents were few and far between.
With so much time on his hands, it was difficult not to think of Sasuke. Naruto closed his eyes to block out the sunlight, his mouth pinching together in a frown. It had been months now since the battle in the Valley of the End, when Sasuke had left him. Difficult not to think of that as a failure, no matter what kind of absolution Kakashi-sensei and Granny Tsunade tried to give him. Difficult not to think of it as the worst mistake he'd ever made in his life.
"Oy, Akamaru!" Kiba's voice rang across the clearing, chased swiftly by Akamaru's high-pitched bark. Naruto turned his head to see the two of them tussling together further up the slope, Akamaru with the sleeve of Kiba's shirt clamped firmly in his jaws.
"Quiet down! Some of us are trying to sleep here." The irritated words came from the other side of the clearing where Kankuro sat with his back against the broad trunk of a tree, Gaara perched in a posture of casual indolence on a flat-topped rock beside him. The two of them had arrived in the village with their sister the day before yesterday, ostensibly because they'd just finished a mission in a nearby country and were stopping by on their way back home. It was Naruto's belief that they were hiding out in the Leaf Village because hot as it was here, it had to be cooler than the desert where they lived.
Kiba gave Kankuro a narrow-eyed glare. "What are you talking about? The two of you should be used to the heat, shouldn't you?"
"It's not the heat that's so troublesome," Kankuro said, scowling. "It's the humidity. Honestly, I don't understand how you people can stand it here."
Naruto bristled inwardly at the slight against his village, but didn't have the energy to make a more open protest. Looking around, he saw Shikamaru lying on his back close to the edge of the lake, arms folded serenely behind his head. Choji sat beside him, morosely chewing on the end of a candy rope. In the other direction, further up the slope behind Kiba, were Neji and Rock Lee. Every one of them looked as washed out as Naruto felt.
"I disagree," Lee said, tugging up a handful of grass from the ground next to him and watching the broken pieces flutter down through his fingers. "It's not the heat or the humidity that's the problem here. The problem is that there's absolutely nothing to do."
The comment made Kankuro smirk for absolutely no reason that Naruto could determine. "During summer in the Sand Village, we find ways to keep ourselves occupied."
"How?" Naruto asked curiously. He found it hard to imagine that there would be much at all to do in a place as desolate-sounding as that.
Kankuro's smirk deepened. "Mostly, we fuck a lot."
The boredom on Lee's face shifted instantly into irritation. "Right, like we're going to believe that," he accused. Naruto was inclined to agree with him. It was common knowledge that guys liked to boast about made-up conquests in order to seem cool in front of their friends.
"I don't care whether you believe me or not." Kankuro's tone was indifferent. He leaned his head back, closing his eyes.
Lee scowled. "I bet you're nowhere near as experienced as you say you are."
Kankuro snorted. "Jealous?"
"No." Lee looked outraged. "I just believe in treating women with some modicum of respect, that's all."
Kankuro peeled open one eye to look at him. "Who said anything about women?"
There was a stunned silence at that. On the rock beside him, Gaara somehow managed to look amused without changing his indolent expression.
Choji cleared his throat. "You mean you...?" He didn't seem able to finish the sentence.
"God," Kankuro swore, exasperated. "I knew you Leaf Ninjas were naive, but I didn't know you were that prudish."
Kiba bristled visibly. "We're not prudish."
"Bullshit. You've never even kissed another guy before, have you?" Kankuro's voice was challenging now. "Hell, you've probably never even kissed a girl."
Kiba looked furious at that, his face flushing. Akamaru growled and glared at Kankuro, sensing his owner's anger. "You're wrong," Kiba said hotly.
"A peck on the cheek from your sister when you were a baby doesn't count," Kankuro sneered. He sat up, his eyes gleaming with malicious amusement now. "If you've got any real experience at all, it's probably just with that dog of yours." Kiba shot to his feet, hands clenching at his sides, but before he could speak Kankuro said, "Okay, fine. I'll give you a chance to prove yourself. If you're not as prudish as you seem to be, then kiss one of your teammates. Right now."
Even Shikamaru glanced up at that. Fury still radiated through Kiba's frame, but there was no way he could back down now without losing face. Naruto glanced at Kankuro, thinking that that was kind of a mean dare to lay down, but he couldn't help being intrigued despite himself. Honestly, this was the most interesting thing that had happened all week.
Kiba's eyes glanced over all of them, looking trapped. He was visibly sweating, and probably not just from the heat.
"Come near me," Neji said without looking up, "and I will knock you unconscious."
The deadpan comment made Naruto laugh out loud. That seemed to break some of the tension in the clearing, and Shikamaru said, "Really, Kiba, you don't have to kiss anyone just because this loser tells you to."
Kankuro leaned back again, closing his eyes. "Whatever. I knew you guys wouldn't go through with it."
Lee looked angry at that. "How can you say that, Shikamaru? Our village's honor is at stake here." He stood up and walked stiffly over to Kiba, hands clenched at his sides. He leaned up to give Kiba a swift kiss on the corner of the mouth and then ducked his head away.
"Pathetic," Kankuro said dismissively.
Kiba's eyes flared, and he reached for Lee's head, cupping the back of it with one hand and bending down to kiss him deeply, tongue and all. Then he pulled away angrily and flopped down on the ground, folding his arms over his chest.
Kankuro laughed. "Very nice," he said sarcastically. "All right, so you guys aren't quite as pathetic as I thought you were."
Lee stood there looking shell-shocked, his hair tousled. Naruto couldn't help but laugh at the look on his face, and soon Shikamaru joined in, then Choji, and finally even Kiba was chuckling. Neji looked amused despite himself.
Finally the laughter tapered off, and Kiba glanced around with a mischievous look. His pride was obviously still stung by the whole thing, and he didn't want to be the only one in the spotlight. "All right," he challenged, "who's next?"
Everyone looked nervous at that and shifted their gazes away, except for Naruto. Caught up in the excitement now, he rose up onto his knees. "I'll go next!" he said, grinning.
"Idiot," Shikamaru said in annoyance, rolling his eyes.
"Come on," Naruto said to him. "Like we have anything more interesting to do."
Shikamaru thought about it for a moment and then conceded the point. "Fine," he said with a longsuffering sigh, and gestured for Naruto to come closer.
Naruto walked over to him and knelt down on the grass beside him. Fisting his hands on his knees, he leaned down to press their lips together. Shikamaru didn't draw away and in fact leaned in to deepen the kiss, opening his mouth slightly in invitation. Naruto dipped his tongue inside Shikamaru's mouth, gasping when he felt the silky heat of the other boy's tongue sliding against his own.
He was slightly breathless when he pulled away and sat back on his heels, and he felt a bit flushed. Around them, the clearing was very quiet. When Naruto looked over his shoulder, he saw that everyone was staring at them. Sitting at Shikamaru's other side, Choji's eyes were very round.
Seemingly oblivious of the eyes watching them, Shikamaru snorted and laid back down again, folding his arms behind his head. "Not bad, Naruto."
"You weren't kidding, Kankuro," Naruto said, wiping the back of his hand over his mouth as he stood up and went back to sit with the others. "This is kind of fun."
Kankuro laughed, shaking his head. Looking irritated again, Lee said, "What's so funny?"
Kankuro gave him a dismissive glance. "You're all a bunch of innocents."
Kiba stepped forward and stood in front of him, casting his shadow over him. His smile showed more than a fair bit of teeth. "I haven't seen you doing anything to show that your stories are anything other than a lot of hot air."
Kankuro's eyes narrowed at him. "Like I need to prove anything to children like you."
Kiba's smile widened, taking on a triumphant edge. "I thought so," he said, and turned away.
Anger tightened Kankuro's brow. He pushed up to his feet and grabbed Kiba's arm. "You're really annoying, you know that?"
Kiba's eyes had a feral gleam in them. "I've been told that before."
Chortling inwardly, Naruto turned his attention to Neji. "What about you?" he asked.
Neji looked annoyed. "Like I care what these two Sand Ninjas think of me."
"It's to be expected," Gaara said to Kankuro, his slight form almost lost in the shade at the edge of the clearing. "If I had to guess any one of them would really be a prude, it would be that one."
Neji looked up at him sharply, his brow furrowing. If looks could kill, Gaara would have been dead at that moment, but Gaara just returned his gaze impassively, looking bored.
"It's not so bad, Neji-san," Lee said tentatively, giving a heartfelt glare in Gaara's direction on his teammate's behalf. "Actually, it can be quite enjoyable."
He knelt down at Neji's side and settled one hand hesitantly on the other boy's arm. Neji didn't pull away.
Naruto looked around the clearing in something like awe. Kankuro and Kiba were locked in an enthusiastic clinch, all but devouring each other's mouths in a clear battle for dominance. As Naruto watched, Kankuro reached down and squeezed between Kiba's legs; Kiba made a low mewling cry and melted forward against him, clearly having lost that particular battle, at least momentarily.
"That wasn't fair," Naruto said, amused despite himself.
"Kankuro isn't known for playing fair," Gaara said, one corner of his mouth curling upward in a small smirk.
Toward the lake's shore, Shikamaru was propped up on one elbow with Choji kneeling beside him. They were kissing, slow and soft, with what looked like real affection behind it. Naruto stared at them, transfixed. Watching them, he felt himself growing warm in a way that had nothing to do with the oppressive summer air. After a moment, Choji shook his head and leaned away self-consciously, but Shikamaru reached out to slide his knuckles down the side of his face and said something that made Choji dip his head and give him a shy smile. They leaned forward to kiss again, Choji stretching out to lie beside Shikamaru in the grass.
A noise behind him made Naruto's head turn. Lee and Neji were kissing now, slow and deep, Lee stroking his hand slowly up and down Neji's back like he was trying to calm a skittish animal. The sight was incongruous but oddly beautiful, with Lee's hard-edged strength and Neji's streamlined grace, both of them gentled and yielding one to the other. Naruto stared at them, growing even warmer.
Kankuro had Kiba on the ground now, holding both wrists down above his head and humping slow and hard against his thigh. Kiba was making noises that made him sound more animal than human, and had the effect of making Naruto feel even more flushed than he already did. Shikamaru and Choji were wrapped around each other in a gentler but no less intimate tangle by the lake, making out with a steady determination that Naruto felt vaguely in awe of. Behind him, Neji was pressing Lee back onto the grass; Lee tossed his head backward as Neji mouthed at the curve of his jaw and down the line of his neck.
It was getting later now, the shadows in the clearing lengthening. Panting, Naruto looked around and saw Gaara sitting unmoving on the rock he'd occupied all afternoon, watching him with an unreadable expression. Nevertheless, Naruto read a challenge in it.
Naruto walked over to him. "Is this really what Sand Ninjas do with their spare time during the summer months?" he asked.
Gaara shrugged. "Pretty much."
Choosing to take the words as an invitation, Naruto climbed onto the rock next to him. He felt encouraged when Gaara just continued to look at him, waiting to see what he'd do next.
Naruto reached out to touch the other boy's arm. The dark fabric of his shirt was smoother than it looked, the muscles underneath hard and lean and warm.
"Shukaku isn't going to kill me if I kiss you, is he?" Naruto asked, only half joking.
Gaara's expression was not reassuring in the least. "Depends on how good you are at it."
Honestly, there was just no way Naruto could turn down a challenge like that. He tightened his fingers around Gaara's sleeve and leaned in to kiss him, feeling surprised and exhilarated when Gaara tipped his head up to meet him halfway. His breath caught when Gaara's teeth closed around his bottom lip, stinging sharply before Gaara's tongue slid into his mouth. Then it was just hot and wet and fast and good, a heady slide of tongues and lips and bodies as they both stretched out lengthwise across the sun-warmed rock and wrapped around each other, reaching for skin.
They rubbed against each other, kissing and groping wherever they could reach. Naruto could hear the others in various stages of copulation behind him, cut through by a sharp wailing cry from Kiba that went straight to his groin. He felt dizzy with it, wanting more, needing it, and Gaara felt so hard and hot and pliable on top of him, and he was so close to the edge, so very very close...
* * * *
He woke up, gasping, and sat up abruptly. Weak morning sunlight filtered in through the closed slats of the blinds above the bed, making him squint. He was sweating profusely, the sheets twisted around his lower body. It took him a moment to get his bearings and remember that he was at home, in his own bed.
A figure stirred in the bed next to him. Glancing down, he saw a head of raven black hair tossed over the pillow beside him, half-covering the curve of the slender white arm it was resting on. Naruto's eyes drifted downward from the hair, following the line of a smooth, leanly muscled back until it disappeared underneath the white sheet. The sight did nothing to calm his raging hard-on.
The hair moved, and something between a moan and a curse rose up from beneath it. Sasuke lifted his head and glanced up at Naruto with an irritated, half-asleep expression. "What time is it?" he mumbled.
"Early," Naruto said, pressing the heel of his hand to his erection and rubbing it absently through the sheet. His mouth was dry. "Aargh, I just had the weirdest dream."
Sasuke's eyes flickered down to take in Naruto's condition, one sharply defined eyebrow rising. "What exactly were you dreaming about?"
Naruto shook his head. "You were gone... run off to join up with Orochimaru, after you tried to kill me. There were a bunch of us hanging out by the lake, and..." He laughed shortly. "And I was really horny, apparently."
"Well, what do you expect with me not there?" Sasuke teased. He leaned up and reached to cup a hand around the back of Naruto's neck, pulling him downward. "Idiot," he said affectionately before devouring his lover's mouth in a kiss.
Naruto relaxed into it, letting the kiss wake him up the rest of the way and remind him that this was his reality, right here, with Sasuke in his bed and in his life, and not likely to be going anywhere anytime soon. As if Sasuke would ever join up with an unprincipled loser like Orochimaru. And to try to kill him? Like that would ever happen...
"Wait a minute," Sasuke said, pulling away suddenly and giving Naruto a narrow-eyed look. "If I wasn't there, just who were you being horny with down by the lake?"
"Uh..." Naruto cast about desperately for some way to explain and then gave it up as a lost cause. Pulling Sasuke down onto the bed beside him, he kissed him as hard as he could and determined to make him forget all about dreams and lakes and imagined realities where they were anyone but who they were, facing the world with anyone but each other.
