Chapter One
Kazekage sat silently for a few moments, looking over the papers he was holding. A summary of the latest mission for Team 4, dubbed Team Masumata after their leader, is again victorious. He placed the papers down on his desk and looked up. Four ninja immediately bowed their heads in respect. “Another success,” he said. Though not like him to praise, this team was the best of their generation, and he felt it was high time he informed them of it. “You’ve yet to fail, Team Masumata. Did you have any trouble completing the mission?”
“No, Kazekage-sama,” Masumata replied.
He paused a moment there, glancing at each of them as they looked up at him and each other. Theirs was a rare team, having two men and two women, rather than the more-seen three men and one woman.
“Dismissed.”
Masumata-sensei led the way out of the room, his subordinates following. Two of three of the students were Chuunin already, and the third close behind. Before they all left, however, Kazekage stood up and called out, “Hold a moment, Shiro-san.”
The girl paused and looked over her shoulder. “Yes, Kazekage-sama?” She had a look of confusion, faint fear, and wonder in her eyes, all not much hidden.
He noticed the other girl, Minami, give a slight glare at her held-back teammate, and he held his tongue until the door shut. Rounding his desk, he leaned back on it and crossed his arms. Every second that passed made Shiro-san fiddle a little more. She had long blonde hair in a high ponytail, leaving a strand falling over her right eye down to her breasts. Her Chuunin vest was halfway zipped, showing quite a bit of a well-endowed chest and the off-shoulder short-sleeved mesh top she wore. Her skirt was tight and fell halfway down her thighs, and she wore typical fingerless gloves. Her ninja boots turned into leggings, traveling almost as high as her skirt with straps around both legs to hold them in place. Her forehead protector was around her hips, the metal plate centered on her left hip.
“You know I watch all my ninja, correct?”
She nodded, looking very shy.
“This includes individuals, as well as the teams.”
Again, she nodded.
“You are. . . becoming a problem,” he told her at last.
“What?” she asked, sharply.
“Even though your team has never failed a mission, I can never give a mission that would please you,” he explained. “Whether it be in the village or out, a guardianship, recon, assassination – nothing. No mission team Masumata takes ever keeps you happy.”
She glanced away, silently.
“Perhaps now you should tell me why.”
Slowly, a blush tinged her cheeks, and she opened her mouth and began without looking at him. “It’s. . . contradictory. There is something in the village I like very much, and something else I greatly don’t.”
He waited a moment for her to go on, then said, “We’ll start with that which you dislike. Tell me.”
She looked up at him, finally. “My parents. They’re very. . . smothering when I’m around. Every time I try to be independent or leave, they make it seem like my leaving tortures them.”
He nodded. “I take it they never wanted you to be a ninja.”
She shook her head. “No, in fact. But the only ‘jobs’ available for a woman is to be the wife of a shop owner, or a kunoichi.”
“Why did you choose to be a ninja?”
“I. . .” She looked away again. “That’s. . . another story.”
Deciding to let it slide, he asked instead, “So tell me what it is in the village you like so much.”
She blushed very obviously. “It’s. . . he’s. . . a boy.”
“A boy,” he echoed. “From your actions so far, you must be in love with him.”
Her blush turned a red color he was certain wasn’t healthy. She stammered out a reply, looking pointedly at her toes, hands fidgeting. He allowed himself the thought that she was adorable before pushing off the desk to stand up straight and get to his point.
“Shiro-san, you don’t have to tell me who he is,” he told her. “I’m not asking about your personal life, but your kunoichi life. We need to come to a solution.”
Judging from her embarrassment, she wasn’t going to answer verbally for a while. As it was, she nodded, but didn’t reply.
It was a little frustrating, but since she openly admitted about disliking her parents, he figured that would be a good way to start. “Step one is convincing your parents to loosen their grip on you.”
She looked up at that, her blush fading but still remaining. “That’s. . . how would I do that?” she asked, looking like she couldn’t think of a way.
It puzzled him to think that Team Four was so successful that there had never yet been a failure, proclaiming the strength and ability of each member, and yet Shiro Suzaki couldn’t think of an answer to her problems with her parents. “Have you talked to them about your being a ninja?”
“I’ve tried,” she offered sheepishly. “But. . . They’re so good at guilting me into feeling bad for the life I’ve chosen, it’s hard to stay stubborn.”
“Hn,” he answered non-committedly as he thought. “Alright. Officially, I’m ordering you to move out of your parents’ home. If they ask why, tell them it’s to help your concentration.”
She stared at him as though he was transforming into another being. “And where would I go?” she almost squeaked.
“You have three teammates with whom to discuss that,” he told her. “That said, now you must tell me more about this boy you like.”
Her blush, which had disappeared a moment ago, returned full-force. She looked down at her toes again. “But I. . . That is. . .” She mumbled something as though talking to her breasts.
Her breasts which, he wasn’t too ashamed to notice, were uncommonly large and well-held in that vest, making them seem just a little bigger than they were. He lifted his eyes from the sight and stepped closer to her, placing a hand on her shoulder.
She looked up at him, startled, and at this distance, her eyes were much more mesmerizing than before. The very fact that they were an orange-red shade should make her frightening or boggle the mind, but it gave her such a warm gaze that he almost shivered. “Kazekage-sama?” she whispered a few seconds later, when he’d neither moved nor said anything.
Why bother holding back, he wondered. His hand lifted from her shoulder to touch her cheek lightly, making her jump. He smiled, something he didn’t do often, but she was being so shy and adorable. . .
“Hmm?” he answered her.
She felt like she was trembling as she said, “Wh-what are you. . ?”
Her question trailed off in a quick inhale when he moved his left hand to drift up her arm, a motion that wasn’t lost on her despite the feather-light touch. “I’m not sure yet,” he murmured, settling his drifting hand on her shoulder.
She glanced away, looking at the wall at her right as though it were interesting. He moved his hand from her cheek to run the backs of his fingers against her skin, and she shivered in reply. But then she looked back at him with what seemed to be anger in her eyes.
“I can’t believe you,” she started, her voice both hurt and venomous. He raised his nonexistent brows in surprise as she went on. “Are you trying to seduce me? I won’t become just another of your one-night girls.”
He’d forgotten about that reputation he had. In all honesty, it wasn’t entirely his fault; women fawned all over him, and he expected to resist it? No, all those he’d laid with had wanted him almost severely and claimed they were in love with him. Though he only did it once in a great while, it happened often enough in the last few years that the rumor had gone all over the village. It seemed as though many girls wanted the title of being a one-night girl and some claimed to be for that simple reason.
And the reason why they were called “one-night girls” is because he’d never chosen the same girl twice. It was simple in his mind: what he needed was not only someone to love him, but for him to be in love as well. It’s said that sex is the epitome which tells you if you’re in love or not, and though he was titled as a great lover, he hadn’t been in love with any of the women as of yet.
He shouldn’t seduce Suzaki and he knew that, and honestly he wasn’t trying to, but he felt drawn to her in a way he’d never known before. Though he admittedly felt lust for her -- she was beautiful and shapely, after all -- it was always like a hushed whisper at the back of his mind. Standing this close to her, he felt it more strongly. . . Yes, he felt lust for her now, but it wasn’t the feeling at the forefront of his mind.
He wondered if he was in love with her, one of the few women who hadn’t jumped at him and tried to snatch him away from the others.
“I know,” he answered her at last. Her hard look remained, but he didn’t want to back away from her or take his hands off her. A thought pierced his focus and asked the question, “What if she doesn’t love you?” He tried to hush the thought, but found he couldn’t. No, if he was going to lay with her as well, he first wanted to know if she was already in love with somebody.
With the way she seemed so shy of him, he allowed a brief second of hope that she was in love with him, and then voiced the question in his mind. “Do you love the boy you mentioned?”
Even though her blush darkened, he was amazed to find that her expression didn’t. “Yes,” she answered, more easily than he would have thought. He didn’t miss how breathy her voice was, as though it took a great effort to say.
He had to ask the next question, even as his chest tightened uncomfortably, and the words slipped from his lips. “Who is it?”
Her expression softened, if only minimally. She seemed to be caught in the same hold as he -- not wanting to say it, but the words came anyway. “He is. . . Kazekage-sama,” she whispered.
Was that fear he saw in her eyes? He tried not to think about it, focusing instead on what she just told him. It’s a phrase he heard a lot, but to her credit, he’d never heard it spoken with such sincerity before. He believed her, and it made him giddy; he wasn’t sure he liked the feeling, but there it was. “Are you sure?” He didn’t want to ask that, truly.
It was obvious she was trembling now, which drew his eyes to her lips as she parted them again. All at once he didn’t want to hear her answer, and leaned down to capture her mouth in a kiss. He watched her eyes widen in surprise before he pulled her closer, allowing his arms to wind around her. And then she kissed him back.
It took all of five seconds, he was sure; then she closed her eyes and leaned into him. Her arms were pinned between their chests, her hands on his shoulders, gripping tightly. If he were a poet, he’d claim that his heart soared or something to that effect, but regardless, he was happy.
And something else, something harder to place.
He wanted to make love to her and he knew it, wanted to test his theory and see if she was the one he’d been searching for. But she didn’t want to be a one-night girl, she’d said so; on the other hand, how else was he to be sure?
He pulled his head back only slightly from the shaking girl in his arms, noting how long it took her to open her eyes, then tilted his head and kissed her again, more fully. He felt opposite of before -- now, when he had a question to ask, he couldn’t voice it. Cowardly, he kept his mouth occupied with other means to stop the words from coming. He wanted so badly to ask her if she’d lay with him, but didn’t want to sound like he was pressuring her.
But more than that, he wanted to hear her answer from before, if she was sure about him. Yet he feared the answer she’d give him, and avoided giving either of them the chance they needed.
She wasn’t denying him, giving him an inner smile, but this was unfair and he knew it. She loves him, and he felt oddly like he was using that love to keep her standing here and kissing him. On the one hand, he’d always used the woman’s “love” for him as a reason to choose them. On the other, it felt wrong now, like he was doing her a disservice. He felt guilty at present, drawing back from the second kiss. Her blush was so dark that he knew it wasn’t healthy, and now he had to give her time to regain her composure.
He stepped back, much as he didn’t want to, and took his hands from her with regret. She stood shakily by herself, almost in the same pose she’d been in his arms. Her hands were touching above her heart, and it looked adorable to him.
She looked at him with an expression he couldn’t quite place -- shock, fear, shyness, passion, distrust, love -- none of these seemed right, yet appeared to be parts of the whole.
He counted three questions running through his mind, and found the numbers were increasing with each second. It was making him a little dizzy trying to keep up and order the importance of each query. Before he had lined up even two, she answered his previous question.
Two fingers touching her lower lip, she said, “Yes, I’m sure.”
All at once he wanted to hug her to him and kiss her senseless, as elation ran through him -- a different kind of elation than he’d ever felt before. Half his mind was certain now that he loved her, but the other half doubted and wanted further proof than a few simple feelings. The part of his mind that was sure he loved her argued that what he was feeling wasn’t simple at all, but he hushed both sides.
He nodded a confirmation at Suzaki. “I won’t ask you to be a one-night girl,” he promised.
She looked away, and when her gaze returned, her eyes showed she’d made a decision. “No matter how much I love you,” she started firmly, “I won’t give in. One night isn’t worth it. Unless I can have you forever, I don’t want you at all.”
That sounded like a vow, as though she were telling herself more than him. He could only smile at her, turning her words over and over in his mind. “Alright,” he agreed. “No woman has ever said that to me before, and Suzaki, I believe you. For that, I will respect you and won’t try to seduce you.” Not consciously, he added silently. He took a step closer to her. “But please try to understand, I won’t be able to resist you forever. At times I will give in and kiss you, just like a moment ago.”
Her eyes displayed understanding. As she replied, her voice remained resolute, “Then understand that, though I may kiss you back, I won’t allow myself to be seduced. Until you prove that you love me, it’s not going to happen.”
He knew what she was referring to. But her words this time were more of a challenge, like she was saying, “Just try to seduce me, I dare you.” He decided to give in, and show her what kinds of passion he was hiding behind his expressionless façade.
This time, when he kissed her, he made it firm and warm, and pulled her tight against him. She gave him a squeak of surprise and then a light moan of enjoyment, and he shivered again. After several seconds in which he could feel her resolve rise up again, he parted his lips and then reclaimed her lips. He resisted the urge to suck on her lower lip only because he knew it would be her first, and he didn’t want to drive her away.
To his delight, she gave another little sigh. And then the moment was over, he was drawing back, and Suzaki looked breathless. He was aroused now, undeniably, and thought it best to let her go on her way before he did try to seduce her. He took two steps back and said, “You are dismissed, Shiro-san.”
She swallowed before nodding, then bowed out.
Both sides of his mind were in agreement; he knew he wanted Suzaki, and now he was determined to have her. Although only half of him was most interested in exploring her body, all of him wanted to know for sure if he did love her. And all he could think was, “I want to love her.”
