Only A Dream
The night was eerily still. The bright full moon illuminated from the star filled sky, casting shadows onto the forest floor, which shifted in the ever-present wind. The sound of leaves rustling to the silent song sent an uncomfortable shiver down Shikamaru Nara’s spine, and he wondered if this had been the best time to overcome his sudden phobia.
Shikamaru didn’t believe in superstition. Just because it happened to be Halloween didn’t make the shadows any more dark or the trees any more menacing than they would be on any other night. It was just him. That’s all.
After noticing a flash of movement among the branches of a tree, but not locating an owner to it, his mind wondered back for a moment why he was out in the middle of his family’s forest on this particular night. He remembered that on this seemingly silly holiday, his friends would get together for a big party. In the past, Shikamaru had always gone and had a decent time. However, in recent years, he found it nothing more than a waste of his time.
The Nara’s comrades were all very experienced shinobi, including himself, and were now getting to the point in their lives where they would like to “settle down.” In a matter of only a few years, everyone Shikamaru knew had suddenly found that significant other most of them had been looking for since they’d been children. It happened so fast, Shikamaru didn’t have time to react… or he had been too lazy to. In any case, before he knew it, everyone around him had been taken and he’d been left alone.
It almost felt like a race to him; one where someone had shouted, “Go” when he hadn’t been paying attention, and didn’t realize what was going on until he was choking on their dust. When his mind finally did decide to snap into action, the whole lot of them were already passed the finish line, leaving Shikamaru still at the start, dazed and confused.
Well, that was one scenario his brain had come up with.
Since all of his friends were dating or in a serious relationship, the Nara found the parties had suddenly gotten… boring. All the guys would talk about their girlfriends, or pick on their boyfriends, depending on who he talked to, and it was pretty much the same with the girls, not that he talked to them much. Shikamaru had found that he never said anything and would quickly grow tired of the nicknames, kisses, hugs, cuddles, blushes, innuendoes, giggles, and other such crap that passed between the couples. It seemed he was the only one who quickly developed nausea at these get-togethers.
Which was usually the reason he gave for not being able to attend. For the most part, it was true, but he never told a single soul about the twinge of jealousy and pain twisting around his heart. He would never voice it, either, having made that decision long ago.
Suddenly, a dark, spooky forest on Halloween didn’t seem so bad.
Snap!
Shikamaru’s head spun toward the noise, but saw only dark shadows looming around him. He could feel sweat start to bead on his forehead, slowly sliding down his face. It was more of a distraction than anything. His dark eyes were focused on his surroundings, starting to ache from looking so hard. The breaths he exhaled were shaky, although he was trying his best to keep calm. The Nara had his hands clenched into fists at his sides to keep them from trembling and the restraint was starting to make his arms feel like jello. His whole body was tense, probably too tense to be able to sense anything correctly, but he couldn’t calm down any more than he was.
‘Stupid fucking dreams,’ he thought, trying to stay focused on the trees surrounding him.
They were dreams. No, maybe nightmare would be more accurate. Shikamaru was in a forest there, too, and he could see the deer standing around him, looking frightened… worried? He couldn’t really tell, they would be too far in the distance, just barely within his sight. It was dark, always dark. The shadows that should have been his friends would play tricks on his mind, making him think someone was near, but never seeing anything among the black nothingness. Then, dark lids would open and glowing eyes would be staring right through him.
Those eyes scared Shikamaru the most. They were the color of soft gold, with long slit-like pupils, much like a cat. They were cold and emotionless, shooting icy daggers into his being and silently promising instant death if he looked away. The power pouring from them touched his very soul and made him tremble in absolute fear. Never had he felt anything that strong before and he knew he would not stand a chance if he fought.
The Nara would hold that fearsome gaze, feeling powerless and thus frightened. No, not frightened, outright terrified. Especially when he felt those hands on him. The touch was as cold as those golden orbs still threatening his life if his eyes drifted away.
He could feel claws connected to rough fingers and always fought hard not to flinch when they pierced his flesh, drawing blood. Shikamaru could feel every scratch, every drop of crimson liquid as it ran down his trembling body. The claws danced over his flesh, spreading his blood and causing the fear within him to double. The eyes staring so hard into his own seemed… satisfied at seeing the horror in the Nara as those hands trailed further down.
Cool fingers wrapped around his groin and the gold eyes came closer, so close Shikamaru could feel breath brush over his lips.
“Mine.” The eyes disappeared as piercing white fangs shot toward his throat—
Shikamaru gasped at the memory, not having meant to recall it so clearly. He leaned up against a tree, catching his breath and wiping the sweat from his brow.
He always woke up like that, covered in a cold sweat, panting, and sometimes crying. Every time he had that dream, the Nara could have sworn it had really happened. The emotions he’d felt were so strong and the pain from those claws was so raw, and how could he have felt something so trivial as blood running down his skin in a mere dream?
However, a quick look over his body confirmed every time that it hadn’t happened. Never would he find a single mark on his sweaty flesh to back up his gut feeling that it was real.
“It’s just a dream,” he said to himself, pushing away from the cool bark and looking into the darkness once more. “It’s just a fucking dream.”
For about two months now Shikamaru had been seeing this nightmare, but recently the feelings were starting to get much more intense, so much so that he’d developed an unnatural fear of the dark. Well, the dark in the middle of forests, maybe. He hadn’t been too bothered when in the middle of the village or in the house or with people. It was just here… alone in the woods in the middle of the night.
Which was why he was out, trying to face his fear and squash the panicked feeling that wanted so badly to erupt. Shikamaru wouldn’t let it. He was a user of shadows, damn it! He shouldn’t be afraid of his main tool for justus!
Embarrassment kept his mouth shut. Like he would tell anyone that he’d developed a fear that only small children and people who’d been abused should have. His friends would have teased more than helped, the same with his parents. The Nara knew from the start, he was on his own with this one.
He took another cautious step forward. His heart skipped a beat at the sound of rustling in some nearby bushes. The noise did not coincide with the wind moving the branches overhead and his chest began to pound at a frantic pace.
Slowly turning his head, his wide eyes gazed at the moving bush, and he tried to keep his breathing even. Shikamaru inched toward the greenery, which was shrouded in darkness. He carefully reached out a shaky hand and swallowed hard, the thumping echoes of his racing heart beating heavily against his ears, sweat trickling down his neck. Holding his breath, he quickly pushed the leaves aside.
A young fawn looked up at him, its small eyes reflecting a bit of curiousness as it chewed on the green leaves of the bush.
Shikamaru let out a long breath, his heart starting to calm, his whole body starting to quiver from exertion. The stress from trying to break his phobia was beginning to take its toll; he’d been at it since the sun had set.
He smiled down at the deer and repeated in his mind, ‘It was just a dream.’
The animal reached for some more leaves and gnawed happily, and he was silently glad the fawn was old enough to recognize him. Had it been too young, it would have run off and he’d be freaking out about now.
A twig snapped somewhere behind him.
Maybe he thought a bit too soon.
Shikamaru kept his eyes focused on the deer as its ears perked up and looked around the ninja standing before it.
‘Please be its parent,’ he pleaded. ‘It’s only the fawn’s parent, that’s all. Nothing to worry about.’
Small black eyes gazed up at him and the look within them made the blood drain from his face.
It was the same look the deer in his dream had right before….
Making a small noise, the fawn turned and darted off into the darkness, leaving Shikamaru alone.
He hoped.
Very slowly, his heart starting to pound heavily in his chest and ears once again, Shikamaru turned around to face a dark forest. His breathing was beginning to come in shallow gasps no matter how he tried to keep himself calm. He focused the best he could, but with the pounding in his ears and sweat starting to drip into his eyes there wasn’t much he was able to focus on.
His head darted around. Did he just see something in those branches? Behind that tree? In the grass? Where? Where the fuck was it?! The wind wasn’t helping, pushing hard against the leaves and causing the shadows around him to dance frivolously and confuse the Nara further.
Panic started to settle around his mind and the rational part didn’t give him a strategy, it merely whispered two words, “Get away.” He breathed heavily, bringing his hands to his face to get the stinging sweat from his eyes. He tried to be quick, not wanting to take his gaze away from his surroundings, but wiping the perspiration only caused him to smear more into his visage. He quietly cursed and kept his hands over his eyes, letting his tears do naturally what his movements had only made worse.
After a few drops from each orb fell, the stinging subsided and he sighed before opening his eyes again.
Shikamaru gasped and fear ran his blood cold in his veins. His body completely froze, heart pounding madly, breathing short and fast.
A pair of cold, emotionless soft gold eyes looked down at him, promising death if he dared to look away.
‘O-o-only a d-d-d-dream,’ his mind sputtered.
Clawed fingers brushed against his sweat and tear stained cheek and trailed down his neck, grabbing into the black cloth hiding the Nara’s flesh.
‘A… a d-dream.’
Shikamaru could feel pressure on his neck, but he didn’t dare look, his dark, terrified orbs locked securely onto the gleaming gold. He heard tearing and felt the cool night air touch his now exposed skin and he was surprised he was able to suppress the shudder. Maybe, though, he did… it was hard to tell, seeing as his body was trembling in fear to begin with.
Those slightly glowing eyes came closer, and the Nara could feel warm breath against his lips.
‘J-just… a….’
“Mine.” The orbs vanished and he saw gleaming white fangs for a quarter of a moment before they pierced the flesh of his neck.
Shikamaru screamed.
He heard his cry echo around him and his vocal chords strain at the force of it. His body finally found movement and he tried to push the being off him.
A low growl rippled up his neck and clawed hands dug into his arms, causing a whimper to escape his lips. There was a flash of movement and Shikamaru was suddenly being pushed against a tree, a strong body pinning him to the cool bark.
His hands were trembling and his whole body shook in horror. He had to get away, but he was too frightened to think. Sharp fangs were still embedded into his flesh and pain flowed quickly through his system. A loud ringing began resounding within his ears and he clenched his eyes shut, breathing heavily.
Shikamaru was panicking, he knew this, but he couldn’t get his mind and body to calm enough to figure out a way to get out of this. The fear jumbled his thoughts and the panic distorted them. He couldn’t breath, couldn’t see, couldn’t escape….
He was going to die.
A small whine slipped passed his lips at the realization. This creature was going to kill him and he was completely helpless. He couldn’t stop it. It was the end.
Shikamaru gasped as the deadly fangs pulled out of his skin, causing more pain to shoot up his neck. He opened his eyes a little when the heavy weight pressing against him lifted a bit. His dark eyes caught a quick glance of his blood dripping from the corner of thin lips, the dark color a large contrast to the pale skin it was running down. Feeling those icy golden orbs on him, Shikamaru looked up into them. His own were wide and full of absolute horror.
The creature’s gaze looked satisfied, not as piercing as before, and the Nara felt the claws slowly being removed from his flesh, only to tare the clothing from his body.
Shikamaru shivered at the cold air touching his exposed skin, his heart pounding hard as if trying to break away from its prison, wanting to go somewhere safe, somewhere this thing couldn’t reach it. His brain wasn’t much help to him, either, as it added the situation together. ‘It bit you and stripped you. Naked; you’re naked and those eyes are…. Oh fuck.’
The golden eyes slowly trailed down Shikamaru’s body and his breathing increased. ‘Oh fuck… fuck, fuck, fuck!’ He whined again and wrapped his arms around himself. He could feel the blood still oozing from the earlier wounds and he tightened his grip.
The creature looked back into terrified dark eyes, but this time Shikamaru couldn’t hold the gaze. His eyes screwed shut and he tried his best to back away, pressing hard against the tree behind him, the bark digging into his flesh harshly.
He was so fucking scared! First the thing terrifies him with dreams and then bites and claws him and now rape?! ‘When will the nightmare end?’
There was a soft chuckle, which sent a tremor down Shikamaru’s spine. Warm breath cascaded over his cheek as the creature leaned closer to him. “Three days,” it whispered, voice calm and emotionless.
Suddenly, Shikamaru was thrown to the forest floor, his shoulder digging roughly into the dirt. He opened his eyes to see only a flash of silver darting away in the darkness, leaving him sitting on the ground, naked, sweating, panting… terrified.
He exhaled sharply, placing his hands over his face and curling up into a fetal position. Tears escaped his eyes as relief started slowly flowing through his being.
Shikamaru was alive.
The creature had let him live and it was enough to block out the possible meanings behind what had been said to him. His heart began to slow and the trembling settled a bit, leaving only the aftershock of adrenaline that had been pouring through his veins. His breathing calmed and he sat up, looking around the darkness still surrounding him for several minutes.
It felt like his phobia had broken. He no longer had the fear boiling inside him at being where he was, and the small noises weren’t bothering him, either. The night was now soothing and Shikamaru took a long while to enjoy it.
Finally taking a deep breath, he reached for his tattered clothing lying a few feet away. They wouldn’t do much for cover anymore, but he knew he’d figure something out. His mind had at last calmed with the rest of his body and he could think clearly once again.
Just as his hand was about to touch the fabric, he stopped. Something wasn’t right. Although his body had stilled, he could feel heat pouring from him. It rose from nowhere and spread and Shikamaru wasn’t feeling comfortable anymore. It was too damn hot! Sweat beaded on his already sticky flesh and he began gulping at the not-cool-enough air, trying to get the heat around him to dissipate. However, it only increased and his head spun at the lack of oxygen. Why the hell was he so hot?
A sharp jolt of pain shot up his spine and he gasped. His eyes clenched shut as the pain continued to spread throughout his entire body. Shikamaru felt it in his very bones and small cries escaped his lips as it intensified, growing sharper and reaching every point in his already exhausted body.
Shikamaru was on his hands and knees, back arching painfully into the air, fingers digging helplessly into the soft dirt. His bones ached and his skin prickled agonizingly, like needles were trying to escape his flesh. Small noises left him as the pain shot from every nerve, every bone, every muscle… he could swear that even his nails and hair hurt.
His skull was even sending large waves of pain crashing against him. If Shikamaru focused enough, it almost felt like he was… growing… changing…. It was hard to describe and even harder to think long enough to get a description. The pain was too much. It hurt, damn it!
It didn’t fade. Fuck, he’d been kneeling there for what had to be hours and the pain was still intense, still all encompassing, and a creepy popping noise had accompanied it. It was gross, like Shikamaru could actually hear his bones cracking in and out of place. The prickling on his skin had grown to a white-hot searing pain that covered the entirety of his flesh.
Shikamaru panted. Why wouldn’t it end? He tried to call for some kind of help, but his voice was too raw and his jaw felt too awkward to make the proper movement.
Slowly, very slowly, the pain started to fade. He kept extremely still, not wanting to aggravate the agonizing feeling to return and gasped for breath. The pain shrank away from his skin and melted away from his bones, resting firmly in his spine, where it dulled to an ache.
Shikamaru opened his eyes and noticed an odd shadow lying beneath him. He looked up to the full moon sitting right above him in the star filled sky and felt the ache coil around the middle of his back, building up to some milder pain than what he’d just experienced.
Pop!
It was a final burst of pain that had Shikamaru howling at the silver orb overhead. He fell in a heap to the forest floor, breathless. His mind wondered briefly why his shoulder didn’t dig into the dirt like it should have, but he was too tired to care. The pain had finally vanished and his body was exhausted and stiff. He closed his eyes and quickly fell into a dreamless slumber.
