I don't own Naruto,
sadly...*sighs* I tried to buy the royalties from Masashi Kishimoto,
but he just laughed in my face. I guess food stamps aren't an

Just because we aren't needed
at the moment doesn't mean we aren't necessary. Loosely based off of

Warnings for
this chapter: Depression and
Suicidal thoughts
A/N: As
a writer of mostly dark and angsty fics, this two shot is a turn from
my norm. It's a less dark than what I'm used to writing, but I hope
it's enjoyed all the same. Big Spoilers inside since this takes
place one year post-chapter 384, in which I'm only making assumptions
on what happens next. In case you are wondering, this fic is a late
Christmas/Kawanza/New year's present to Kurai Kisu. She thinks that
this is a NejiNaru pairing...but, Surprise, Kurai! It might not be!
The pairing is a big surprise, in fact, I'm not revealing it until
the end of the second chapter! But here's a hint, it's one of your
favorite pairings but I'm not saying which...it may be a NejiNaru, it
maybe a GaaNaru, it maybe a MenNaru, hell, it might even be a
SasuNaru (shudders)...of course you'll just have to read to find out
which one it is or if it's none of the above. And don't kill me,
because I want this to be a pleasant surprise for you, after all
Christmas is supposed to be full of surprises! I hope you enjoy
this, Kurai!

*************************
It
was Christmas Eve in Konoha again, and Naruto had never felt so
depressed in his entire life. He had finished with the missions
Tsunade had provided for him that day, all D-Class missions mind you.
All day long, he had either been helping some woman carry her
Christmas packages, protecting a man who was doing some last minute
shopping for a very popular toy from a mob of insane parents who
wanted the same toy, or helping an old lady who was stricken with
arthritis in her hands wrap gifts for her grandchildren. It was as
if Tsunade, no, everyone of his precious people were trying to get
him out of their hair...out of their way.
To
make matters worse his heart had a mind of it's own and reminded him
of the day that it had broken completely...No, he wouldn't let
himself think about it...it was too painful. But his heart continued
to remind him that he was alone, that he was spending Christmas
alone. And he had hoped that someone, anyone, even if it was
Gai-sensai, would spend at least an hour or two with him on Christmas
so he could forget his misery if it was just for a brief moment.
But, as it seemed, all his friends and precious people had better
things to do. All of the remaining Rookie 9 were spending Christmas
with their families, respectively. Kakashi-sensai and Iruka-sensai
wanted to have alone time on Christmas day. Tsunade baa-chan wanted
to spend Christmas alone to drown herself in sake, still mourning
over Jiriaya's death. Team Gai, which included Gai-sensai, Lee,
TenTen and...Neji...was away on a B-Class mission and wouldn't be
returning until after New Years. Gaara...someone who understood his
loneliness, was too busy setting up the Christmas festival for Suna.
And Sasuke...Naruto squeezed his eyes to prevent tears from flowing.
Sasuke wasn't coming back. Even after he killed Itachi, he had made
it absolutely clear that he wanted nothing to do with Konoha or
anyone from it in only a few words. Sasuke was beyond his reach. It
had devastated Naruto. Not only had he failed Sakura-chan, he had
failed his village...failed himself.
The
blond Kyuubi container opened tear-filled sapphire eyes to gaze upon
the village as he stood on the head of Sandaime of the Hokage
Monument. He was worthless as a friend and a ninja. Who the hell
would want a 'dobe' such as himself as Hokage? He smirked bitterly,
maybe he could do everyone a favor. End it here and now. The
village would probably throw a festival when they learned of his
death. His friends would probably go on with their lives and forget
about him.
He
nodded to himself, decision made. Everyone would be happier in the
long run, right? It wasn't as if he was needed or anything. He
turned his whiskered face up to the night sky seeing a shooting star
skim across the blackness. He chuckled bitterly, “Make a
wish...yeah, I wish I had never been born.”
He
turned his gaze back to the village, then lowered it to the rocky
ground below. If he jumped, from Saidaime's head, there was no way
Kyuubi would be able to repair the damage before he drifted out of
this life. Even though Tsunade's head was highest, it was above a
grove of trees and he wouldn't chance them breaking his fall.
Brat...
Naruto
groaned in aggravation. Just his luck for Kyuubi to interrupt him.
He decided to ignore the irritating kitsune demon and took a deep
breath...
BRAT!!
WHAT!!
Naruto clinched his fists, his nails digging into his palms. He
really wanted to get this over with, he didn't need the stupid
furball stalling him.
Don't even think about it!
Who's
gonna stop me? You? I'd really like to see you try.
Damnit,
brat! Think about what you're doing!
I
HAVE thought about it and I've made up my mind. I'm doing what
should have been done a long time ago. Now, LEAVE ME ALONE!
BAKA-YAROU!!
WHEN I GET OUT OF HERE, I'M GONNA...
Naruto
tuned out the many blasphemies and curses Kyuubi directed towards
him. He took another deep breath and closed his eyes. But before he
could step off the Sandaime's head, a terrified scream from very
close by captured his attention.
“Tesukete! Tesukete!(1)” the screaming was
coming from the nearby woods followed by the loud sounds of
splashing.
Being the kind hearted person that he was, Naruto just
couldn't ignore the terrified cries for help. He swiftly followed
the sounds to a nearby river where he saw an what looked to be an old
lady thrashing around in the water. “Tesukete! I can't swim!”
All thoughts of suicide were gone as he quickly jumped
into the river and quickly waded over to the panicked old woman.
Once he reached her, he noticed that the water only came up to his
thigh.
“Baa-chan, Baa-chan!” he gripped both her
arms and pulled her towards him, “Put your feet down!”
The soaked old lady did so and found that the water was
indeed shallow. Naruto gently escorted her out of the river and
onto dry land. As he did so, he gleaned her appearance. She was not
much older than Sandaime had been, her frazzled gray hair dripping
wet, she looked to be wearing several layers of clothing and was
carrying a hand bag that looked to be woven out of basket weave. To
sum it up, she was the perfect rendition of a homeless bag lady.
“Baa-chan,” Naruto spoke finally after
letting the elder catch her breath, “Next time make sure your
really drowning before you call out for help.”
BAM! The old woman's purse came down smartly on the
blond shinobi's head.
“Itai! Itai!” the teen held the top of his
head feeling a large lump forming where she clocked him, “What'd
you do that for?!”
“I WAS drowning, you baka!” the old crone
growled out, “Kids these days!”
Naruto merely narrowed his azure eyes, his lips forming
a pout, “You're welcome,” he mumbled still rubbing the
tender lump on his head, “What are you doing here anyway,
Baa-chan? Shouldn't you be home with your family on Christmas eve?”
“Oh, I haven't got a family,” The old woman
had a thoughtful look in her azure eyes that almost seemed to mirror
his own.
“You too, huh?” a frown graced the teens
tanned features, his forehead wrinkling in thought. Almost
immediately a large grin found its way to his face, “Oi,
Baa-chan! Would you like to go get some Ichiraku ramen with me? My
treat!”
The old lady's eyes seemed to light up and a warm smile
graced her elderly features, “How thoughtful of you! I would
love to!”
***********************************
Naruto sat on one of the stools beside the elderly lady
he rescued, inhaling the fourth bowl of ramen. Now and again, he
would give a side glance to the crone beside him who was still
eating, no, 'gumming' her first bowl. She had asked Teuchi, the
ramen shop's owner, for a glass of water and he had literally fallen
out of his seat when she removed her dentures and dropped them in the
glass like it was no big deal. I really wished she had warned me,
he had thought, pulling himself back up into his seat(2).
“You got a name, Baa-chan?” the blond
shinobi inquired, trying to strike up a conversation to distract
himself from staring at her toothless chewing.
“Certainly, I do,” the teen was relieved
when she paused in her eating to answer, “My name is Seiko, but
you can call me Seiko-baachan, if you like.”
Naruto nodded, a felicitous grin plastered across his
face. Even though it was kinda strange, at first, he really did
enjoy the company of the elderly lady...almost like having his own
grandmother with him. He turned back to his fifth bowl of miso
ramen, and then inquired, “So, you said you didn't have a
family, right?”
“I used to, but you know how it is, being a
shinobi.” She smiled thoughtfully, “I lost my husband
and my two older sons in the Shinobi War. My youngest son died
protecting the village from the Kyuubi.” Naruto noticeably
flinched at the last part, his appetite gone.
“I'm sorry...” guilt tinged his voice, but
Seiko's smile only widened.
“What are you apologizing for?” She gently
patted his back with a bony hand, “After all, if it hadn't been
for you, this village would be in ruin, Uzumaki Naruto.” His
eyes widened, how did she know my name? She cackled
momentarily, “Your name precedes you.”
“Thanks, Baa-chan, but I honestly think that this
village would have been better off without me,” he lowered his
head, his blond bangs overshadowing his eyes.
“You really
think so, huh?” Seiko arched a wrinkled gray brow. She dipped
her hand in the glass of water that held her dentures and replaced
them in their proper place; inside her mouth, “In that case,
you need to come with me. I have something to show you.”
The blond teen blinked quizzically at the old woman,
turning a little green when she placed her dentures back in place.
As she stood up, she glanced at him as if silently asking if he was
coming along. He nodded slowly and rose from his stool, following
Seiko out of Ichiraku's Ramen shop.
******************************
“Oi! Seiko-baachan! Where are we going?”
Naruto inqurired as he untangled his black and orange jacket from a
vine that had caught the fabric as he walked through the woods behind
the crone.
“Well, you wished you had never been born. So,
I'm gonna show you what the world would be like if you hadn't,”
Seiko's tone spoke in depths of seriousness.
“EH?!?” the teen shinobi's azure eyes grew
comically wide. He slowly extended his index finger in the old
woman's direction, his mouth opening and closing like a goldfish,
“H-How did you know about that? A-And what do you mean by show
me?”
“I meant exactly what I said,” The old
crone, once reaching a clearing in the woods, turned to face the
young shinobi behind her, her face held the expression of solemnity.
“You mean like a genjutsu?” Naruto
questioned eying her warily.
“Good Heavens, no,” Seiko cackled at the
suspicious look the teen gave her, “I never had the talent to
become a shinobi when I was alive.”
“EH?!?” If at all possible, azure eyes
widened larger than before, his face growing abnormally pale,
“Y-You're a g-ghost?”
“More like a guardian angel,” She replied
softly, trying to soothe the terrified teen's growing fear.
“A-An angel,” He whispered softly, the
coloring starting to return to his tan face and the tension in his
body slowly easing.
“Yes,” A warm smile appeared on the care
worn face of the elderly woman, “But I haven't got my wings
just yet. You are my last assignment before I do.” Naruto
stared at the woman in silent awe, his mouth agape his body frozen,
“Maa, are you just gonna stand there and stare at me all night,
or are you ready to go?”
Pulling out of his stupor, the teen shinobi nodded to
the angel and began walking towards the glade in which she was
standing. Seiko gently grasped his arm and, suddenly, to the blond's
surprise, the woods surrounding them disappeared.
***********Yondaime***********
Naruto felt as if he had been dragged into a whirlpool
that sucked him into the depths of the sea. His wide azure eyes
gleaned the surroundings where they appeared; they were back in the
village, only it looked smaller than before. He spared a glance at
Seiko before turning back to his surroundings.
“This is...This is Konoha...but it seems
different somehow,” He murmured earning a nod from the angel at
his side.
“You're right,” Seiko smiled knowingly
before a loud explosion shook the ground beneath them, “This is
Konoha seventeen years ago. The very day you were supposed to
be born.”
Naruto opened his mouth to inquire what she had meant
by that before another explosion caused him to fall to the ground,
“If this was seventeen years ago, then...” the teen
turned to the elderly woman, eyes wide with horror, “Kyuubi!”
“Precisely,” she gave an affirmative nod
before another explosion rocked the earth beneath them, “Up
ahead, that's what I want to show you.”
“But...shouldn't we help?” the determined
hero inside of Naruto screamed for him to help protect the village,
“I mean, people are gonna get hurt if we don't do something!”
Seiko solemnly raised a hand to stop him from moving
and shook her head, “There's nothing you can do.”
“What?! What do you mean 'there's nothing I can
do'? We need to do something before innocent people are killed!”
“But here you don't exist,” was the answer
and Naruto gasped at this revelation, “Here, no one will be
able to see or hear you...you are like that of a phantom only able to
observe.”
“But...But-” Tears were stinging the azure
eyes of the blond shinobi, absorbing the information Seiko gave him;
there was nothing he could do, only stand by and watch.
“Let's go,” the elderly angel offered the
boy her bony hand and helped him to his feet, as they moved towards
their destination.
*******************************
Before the teen shinobi stood the Yondaime, Minoto
Namikaze, on the head of Gamabunta in all his former glory assessing
the situation with the Kyuubi with serious azure eyes. Naruto opened
his mouth to speak only to be halted by Seiko, who put a bony finger
against her lips to indicate that he should be silent. Several ANBU
appeared around Minoto, kneeling before him as a sign of respect.
“Hokage-sama,” The ookami ANBU spoke, and
the teen gasped recognizing the voice as Kakashi-sensai's.
“Is everything prepared?” The blond Hokage
inquired without turning his focus from the kitsune demon. Kakashi
hesitated, “Where is Naruto?”
“F-Forgive us, Hokage-sama,” Naruto gasped
at the stammer in Kakashi's voice, as if it were about to break, “The
child...Naruto...he was...stillborn.”
An ominous silence descended on the group and when
Minoto spoke again, Naruto could hear the sorrow in his voice, “And
Kushina?”
“She...isn't doing very well,” again Naruto
gasped at the unusual tone of Kakashi's voice, “She's...not
expected to live.”
“I see...” the Yondaime's voice came out
almost as a whisper, “I suppose I have no choice. Order the
shinobi on the front line to retreat. I had hoped it wouldn't come
to this.”
“Hokage-sama! Please! You mustn't use *that*
technique,” the neko ANBU beside Kakashi contended, “If
you do, the whole village-”
“I'm aware of the consequences, but there are no
other options,” The young Hokage turned his face towards the
night sky, and Naruto could swear he saw tears on the elder blond's
face, “I had hoped my son, Naruto, would have saved us...he
was our only hope to maintain what is left of the village. But now
the only option is to destroy it in order to eradicate the Kyuubi.
Forgive me.”
“Time to go,” the soft elderly voice of the
angel pulled the teen Kyuubi container from his shock. He turned to
her unaware of the tears spilling from his eyes.
“H-He was...my father?” Naruto stammered,
disbelief tinging his voice. The old woman nodded in affirmation,
and he let out a ragged breath, trying to keep his emotions under
control though his tears continued to flow. He shook his head to
bring himself to his senses, “W-What technique were they
talking about that would destroy the village?”
“It's a forbidden ninjutsu called the Black Hole
jutsu, an imitation of the Mangekyo's Implosion technique,”
Seiko explained, shaking her head sadly, “More powerful but
unlike the Mangekyo's Implosion, it's uncontrollable. it creates a
vortex so powerful, not even light can escape it. It will actually
do more damage than the Kyuubi did, unfortunately. The only way to
prevent it from spreading is a sealing technique. We have to move on
now, Naruto.”
The teen made a pained face, as he watched the Yondaime
make hand seals for the jutsu, then turned away, letting the old
woman again grasp him by the arm, their surroundings once again
disappearing in front of his eyes once more.
***********Iruka***********
A thick forest of trees appeared in Naruto's line of
site and he turned to Seiko with a questioning glance. She pointed
towards a small clearing in which Naruto noticed two figures, one of
them he recognized, the familiar brown ponytail and scar across his
nose.
“Iruka-sensai!” The blond shinobi took off
in a dead run towards the brunette chuunin, and, not focusing on
anything else, he tripped on something bulky, landing face down on
the ground. Lifting himself to a sitting position, he turned to see
what had caused him to fall.
It was a boy, a dead boy. The kid looked no older than
ten years of age. His brown hair was caked and matted with blood and
his green eyes stared lifelessly towards the night sky. Naruto
counted six shiriken sticking out of the boy's chest, coagulated
blood staining the metal objects. It wasn't the gruesomeness of the
boy's death that bothered him; it was how young the boy had been.
“Why, Mizuki?!” he heard Iruka's voice from
the clearing, and he rose from his place next to the dead boy to
investigate. What he saw was almost like deja vu. “You used
that poor boy to steal the forbidden scroll! And for what?! Power?!
How could you, Mizuki?! How could you betray the village?! Betray
me?!”
“Maa, maa, Iruka. You really are simple minded,
aren't you?” the silver haired chuunin Naruto recognized as
Mizuki spoke in an amused tone, the scroll that Naruto remembered
stealing when he was in the academy was slung over the chuunin's
shoulder, “Do you really think I care what happens to this
Kami-forsaken village or about you?”
“You will not get away with this, Mizuki!”
the brunette chuunin growled out, moving his body into a fighting
stance, even though Naruto could tell he had been wounded prior to
the confrontation, “I won't allow you to leave Konoha with that
scroll!”
Pulling the giant shiriken from his back, the silver
haired shinobi gave Iruka feral grin, “Watch me!”
Though his reflexes were slow from being wounded, Iruka
managed to dodge the giant shiriken just in time. But it was all for
naught. Before he could react, the brunette chunnin found himself
pinned to a tree by several kunai, some of them embedding in his legs
and arms. Forgetting momentarily that he would neither be seen nor
heard, Naruto was ready to charge into the clearing to protect one of
his first precious people when a bony hand gripped his wrist
preventing him from moving. He turned to Seiko who gave him a look
that reminded him what was going on. That's right...there's
nothing...I can do...the blond shinobi felt the anger rise with
in him at the helpless feeling that came with this revelation.
His fingernails clawed down the bark of a tree beside
him as he watch Mizuki approach the helpless Iruka, who was too
exhausted from blood loss to break free from his bonds.
“So...this is how it ends?” Iruka breathed
out raggedly, as the silver haired chuunin placed a sharp kunai to
the brunette's throat.
“A kiss goodbye for your lover, hm?” Mizuki
smirked as he leaned forward to brush his lips against Iruka's own,
salty tears from the brunette shinobi's eyes slipping into the
traitorous shinobi's mouth. As they kissed, the sharp blade of the
kunai ran vertically across the young academy teacher's neck, blood
spilling from the wound and onto Mizuki's flak jacket. It was only
then that the silver haired shinobi released the lips of his now dead
lover.
“Bittersweet,” Mizuki mumured to the dead
chuunin as he licked the tears from his lips. He sighed softly as if
it had been nothing more than a parting of ways, “No one ever
said that breaking up was easy.”
Naruto gnashed his teeth at the traitor's comment, his
glowing red eyes letting out an endless supply of tears,
“That...bastard...” He slowly approached the clearing,
moving towards his dead sensai. A pitiful sob erupted from the teens
throat when azure eyes locked with lifeless chocolate brown.
“If...If I had been here...if I had been able to do
something...” There was no need to finish the sentence; both
Seiko and Naruto knew how it ended...he would still be alive.
***********Sakura***********
The pair appeared at the training grounds where Naruto
remembered he had taken the bell test with Kakashi-sensai. It was
daytime, and he looked out past the training grounds to see, to his
surprise, that Konoha had been completely rebuilt. He took a few
steps towards the village before something caught the corner of his
eye. To his left was the Memorial Stone with the names of KIA
shinobi engraved on the surface and, standing before it was a blond
kunoichi.
“Ino!” He smiled briefly, then as quickly
as the smile appeared, it vanished, “What is she doing here at
the Memorial Stone, Seiko-baachan?”
“Listen,” Seiko placed a wrinkled, bony
hand on the young boy's shoulder.
“Hey! I know I'm late but, here,” Ino
placed a bouquet of white roses next to the stone, then wiped away a
tear that was trickling slowly down her cheek, “Happy Birthday,
Forehead Girl.”
The Kyuubi vessel suddenly blanched,
“S-Sakura-chan...How?”
“Listen,” the elderly angel repeated.
“Oi, Ino!” a familiar pony tailed brunette
lazily waved at her as he approached from the path that lead down to
the village below, “You're late. Asuma's waiting with our new
mission.”
Ino heaved a sigh of slight annoyance, “I
know...I just...needed to be here today.”
“Ino...” Shikamaru placed a comforting arm
around her shoulders, “I know she was your best friend, but
it's been three months. You need to get over it. It's too
troublesome to hang on to the past.”
“Shut up!” Ino pulled his arm from around
her and pushed the startled shadow user away, “You have no idea
what I'm going through! When Chouji gets crushed beyond recognition
by that Monster's sand, then we'll talk!” Ignoring any
futher statements from the lazy brunette, she walked past him down
the trodden path towards the village.
Naruto felt as if his his legs were made of jelly,
falling to his knees, he weakly muttered, “Sakura-chan...”
Another precious person had died because he hadn't been there to
protect her.
***********Kakashi***********
Naruto now stood in a small plowed field in the rural
area of Konoha, Seiko standing beside him. He started walking down
the rows of growing vegetables towards the nearby farm house
wondering why he was in this part of Konoha. Sure he had passed this
area several times on the way to the training grounds, but never did
he give it a second glance.
“Uh...Baa-chan,” Naruto's azure eyes roved
around the small piece of farm land, “What are we doing here?
I don't know anyone from around this part of Konoha.”
“Oh, trust me, you do,” She gave a small
cackle, “You'll see in a moment.”
The teen arched a blond brow at the cackling crone. He
just hoped that this wasn't as depressing as the last few trips...he
didn't think he could take seeing anymore of his friends and precious
people die or suffer because of his absence. He really began to
believe that maybe, just maybe, they truly did need him in their
lives. He was lost in his thoughts until a shock of silver hair
caught his attention. He very nearly fell over.
“Eh?!? Kakashi-sensai?!?” Indeed, it was.
However, he looked extremely different than what Naruto was used to.
He wasn't wearing his normal jounin uniform, only a gray tee shirt
and a pair of old jeans, he wore an eye patch instead of his hitai to
cover his right eye, and...The blond shinobi's eyes widened comically
and his jaw dropped, “KAKASHI-SENSAI'S NOT WEARING HIS MASK!!
WHAT THE HELL?!?”
“HELLO, FRIEND AND RIVAL OF MINE!” The
booming voice of Konoha's Green Beast awoke Naruto from his shock,
“IT IS A BEAUTIFUL AND YOUTHFUL DAY, WOULDN'T YOU SAY!”
“Oh, hello, Gai,” A small smile graced
Hatake's handsome features, “What brings you here?”
“I AM HERE TO CHALLENGE YOU!!” Maito Gai
flashed one his blinding trademark grins, “I AM IN THE LEAD, 20
TO 19! IT IS YOUR TURN TO PICK THE CHALLENGE!”
Kakashi let out an annoyed sigh, “Sorry, Gai, but
I'm just not really in the mood for a challenge today.”
The taijutsu user lowered his head disappointedly, a
cloud of depression descending around his head as he whined, “You're
never in the mood anymore.”
“I'm really sorry, but...I've just had my fill,”
a single onyx eye focused on the ground, a frown marring the features
of the copy-nin's face, “I couldn't take it anymore...watching
my comrades die...my lover...my sensei...my students...No matter how
hard a person tries, he can't quit being human. I guess I'm just too
human to be a shinobi.”
“Being a shinobi doesn't mean you have to stop
being human, my friend,” Gai arugued, clapping a comforting
hand on Kakashi's shoulder, “You know, it's just not the same
without you around.”
“I'm sure Konoha's shinobi are doing just fine
with one less shinobi,” the former jounin grumbled bitterly.
“Not with one it's best gone,” The green
beast gave Hatake a sad smile, “You've been missed, very much
so.”
“They'll get over it,” Kakashi shrugged
Gai's comforting hand off his shoulder, and added bitterly, “Now
if you don't mind, I have work to do. I have to get these vegetables
ready to sell at the market next week.” With that said, the
former copy-nin grabbed a bushel basket and made his way towards his
vegetable crop, leaving a dejected taijutsu user in his wake.
Naruto shook his head in disbelief, “Kakashi-sensei
quit? Why?”
“Weren't you listening?” a wrinkled brow
rose at his inquiries.
“Because he couldn't take loosing another
precious person, I understand,” the teen shinobi furrowed his
brow in thought, “But...I just can't believe he gave up...just
like that. What happened to 'Those who abandon their comrades are
worse than trash'? That's what he told us when we passed the bell
test. And now he's doing exactly that...abandoning his comrades...I
never thought I'd see this out of Kakashi-sensei.”
A small wind blew through the field as Naruto watched
from a distance, disappointment apparent in his expression, as the
former shinobi began gathering his crop from the field.
