Black. That was the theme color of Sakura’s life these days – black clothes; a black coffin; the huge, gaping, black windows of his home; the scorched, black leaves lying on the ground all around his home. How fitting for a Leaf Village in a Fire Country. The sky above her head was black also – the millions of stars that normally littered the skies of Konoha were nowhere to be seen. Sakura briefly wondered if watching the stars in a cemetery still counted as such if there were no stars?
She had to be dragged away from the coffin so that he could be laid to rest. Sakura even tried getting into the coffin to reclaim the body of a man inside of it. She remembered feeling sorry, so sorry, for Kurenai-sensei when Asuma-sensei was killed. Now Sakura could feel sorry for herself too. How swell. At least she wasn’t in Kurenai’s situation - she wasn’t pregnant. Unfortunately, she wasn’t pregnant. Sakura couldn’t decide which one was worse. Both options were equally shitty in Sakura’s opinion. Raising a child alone was hardly her dream come true, but at least that way she’d be left with something more then memories and pictures. A whole armful more of what Sakura would be able to handle right then. The kunoichi shivered in the cool night air and rubbed both her stiffening arms. It did very little to ease her shakes though: the blood kept freezing in her veins at the thought of Naruto’s death, effectively disrupting her circulation. Blood that didn’t flow just didn’t do the trick for Sakura. Or Naruto, for that matter. Which was why he was dead and buried instead of yelling at her to get her butt off the cold ground. The ninja idly wondered if she should even be here –sitting and hugging her knees all alone at Naruto’s grave in the dead of the night. She was a believer in an afterlife so, technically, she was simply holding vigil for an empty shell. Still, Sakura couldn’t bring herself to go home. It was equally empty there. As empty as she was feeling now, the kunoichi could hardly hope to make her home any less empty by being there. It was awfully cold though. Sakura closed her eyes and a defeated sigh rose in her throat as she stood up to leave. Suddenly, the ninja realized her solitude was illusive. Sakura wasn’t alone. She didn’t need to turn around to realize she was leaning against someone. Someone who was standing awfully close behind her, and yet she failed to sense their presence. Whoever it was, Sakura wondered exactly how long they had been standing there. Has she been so consumed by her grief she failed to notice an intruder? How unbecoming of a ninja. In a flash, Sakura has taken in a battle stance, facing the stranger. Her eyes quickly darted upward from a black-clad chest she was currently having a staring contest with and Sakura found herself staring into the Sharingan. Her stance relaxed slowly. “Sasuke!...kun? …Is that really you?” Before Sakura even finished her own sentence, her body automatically regrouped into a more defensive posture. After all, he could be anyone. But somehow, Sakura knew it was really the Uchiha. Sasuke shrugged. “I thought you, of all people, would know me when you saw me.” “But you…how did you get past the guards? Rumor has it, you’re a missing-nin.” Sasuke failed to notice the sarcasm or perhaps he simply chose to ignore it. “What’s with all the questions? Not happy to see me?” It’s not that she wasn’t. But Sasuke had no business being here now. Naruto was gone. Sakura’s life was officially messed up. And, suddenly, the Uchiha decides to return. He then declares his undying love for Sakura, they have a passionate reunion, and live happily ever after, with tons of babies in tow. It seemed a little too good to be true – and Sakura knew well enough that life doesn’t work like that. She didn’t want Naruto’s death to be the price of her alleged happiness. Not to mention, Sasuke has lost some in the looks department. He looked dead - a lot more dead than any living person should ever have to. Sakura eyed him suspiciously. Of course, Sasuke was never a poster boy for a surfer’s complexion but still…It was disturbing to see skin so white it made the moon look tanned, on a living, breathing human. Sakura had a sudden urge to reach out and touch him – she wanted to see if that skin felt as cold as it looked. “So…what are you doing here exactly?” she asked. “Visiting a friend’s grave. Am I not allowed?” “You sure picked a great time to come. It’s the middle of the night, Sasuke.” The Uchiha simply stared back. “You’re here, aren’t you?” Ok, so he had a point there. But still…something just didn’t click. Sasuke. Cemetery. Naruto. Sasuke…Sasuke… “Wait, how did you even know Naruto was dead?” Sasuke smiled. “He told me.” Sakura’s eyes grew wide, as the black clouds rolled in obscuring the moon and the silhouette before her as it slowly dissolved into the darkness.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The End.
