Feedback: Oh would you,

Notes: I got the basic
idea for this fic after re-reading a Harry Potter fic called
'Correspondence' id:2087593. But this fic won't just be in letter
form and this one is most definitely going to have some boyxboy
romance.

Uchiha Sasuke, 14 year
old nukenin from Konohagakure, now Otogakure, looked down at the
small orange frog in front of him. He was sure he'd seen that thing
before, maybe a week or two earlier at the most. He was often popping
up to see the dobe...Naruto.
“Yo!” The
frog raised what passed as one of it's arms in a small abbreviated
wave.
Sasuke blinked.
“Got something for
you.” The frog continued. He took a white, slightly mussed
scroll out from behind it's back and threw it to the black-haired
youth.
Sasuke caught it by
reflex, frowning slightly.
“Uh...it's from
Naruto,” the frog said, then gave out a long sigh. He
backpedaled fast when Sasuke's head shot up, red Sharingan eyes
piercing him. “And...uh...I'm gonna...go.” The frog said,
disappearing with a puff of smoke.
Sasuke looked down at the
scroll in his hand, absently noting the round stain of something that
smelt like...miso? Probably from the bottom of a bowl of ramen. He
threw the scroll across the room and laid back down on his bed. He'd
had barely an hour of sleep in four days and his adrenaline high from
attacking Naruto and his consequent rapid departure (read escape)
had long since worn off. That and the fact that Kabuto had only just
finished 'testing' him...God he needed some sleep...
::
Uzumaki Naruto, a 14 year
old shinobi of Konohagakure, glared at the wall in front of his bed.
It wasn't as good as actually glaring at another person, but these
days everyone was busy. Sakura-chan would probably come around late
afternoon maybe, if he was lucky, sometimes alone, sometimes with Ino
for a quick chat, although she mostly just sat and stared at nothing.
Thinking about that damn Sasuke-bastard probably.
Kakashi-sensei would pop
around at odd hours, looking tired and oddly harassed. Heh. He
deserved it. Stupid lying sensei. Naruto knew he'd been playing
favourites when he'd been fobbed off to that closet-pervert Ebisu
while Kakashi-sensei had been teaching Sasuke that Chidori move; and
even though that had been far in the past, the recollection still
pained him.
Hells, his chest still
hurt.
It was hard to trust him,
much less carry on any meaningful conversation with the man who was
supposed to be their leader, their teacher.
Iruka-sensei came around
every day though in the evenings. He still had classes to teach, and
his duties as a very overworked chuunin, but he made time for Naruto
every night, usually bringing with him an order from Ichiraku's.
Naruto had been serious
when he'd told Sasuke that he sometimes thought of Iruka-sensei as
his father.
Tsunade-baachan had been
round twice to check up on him, and that was more than he knew he had
the right to expect. Being the Godaime ate up her time like nothing
else.
And then there was
Sasuke.
Dammit! He thought the
whole 'I'm leaving Konoha' thing had been dealt with before already.
Damn that Itachi! He just had to show up during Team 7's last
mission, didn't he? Had to do the whole 'I'm better than you and
you're just a little weak baby compared to me, oh, and by the way,
you're still not worth my time - I want Naruto, the dobe you consider
inferior to you'.
Having Kakashi-sensei
there with Sakura-chan probably hadn't helped matters. Naruto was
still sure half the reason Sasuke ran away was because Itachi made
him look bad in front of them. It also hadn't helped that Itachi had
actually managed to get him, HIM, Naruto, away from his teammates for
a whole two days before he was rescued. Two days of having that
fucking sword of the blue shark-man suck out all his chakra and then
having another Uchiha beat on him.
Among other things.
It was only by luck that
Kakashi-sensei had run into some Leaf shinobi returning from their
own mission that he'd even been rescued.
When they got back Sasuke
had brooded, and angsted, and brooded a bit more. He snapped, glared
and hissed at everyone...more that is. He became even more vicious in
his training matches, Naruto knew that from experiencing them.
He was especially bad
when Kakashi set them on lower 'D' class missions then disappeared,
likely on his own missions.
On that particular day
though, Sasuke went too far.
Then, he left.
Naruto was still certain
Sasuke had been trying to kill him. He'd attacked with no
prior warning, not even a 'Let's spar, dobe.' like he usually did.
No, just a flat out, fully powered Chidori straight into his
chest...again! Barely minutes after their gardening assignment had
finished. Hell, Sakura-chan was barely five blocks away when Sasuke
struck.
That was what saved his
life.
Naruto glared at the wall
as hard as he could, his face screwing up in discontent until a pop
of displaced air and a puff of smoke disturbed him.
“Yo.”
Gamakichi greeted, looking disgruntled. “What's wrong?”
Gamakichi asked, looking at Naruto's face. “You constipated?”
Naruto went red. “WHAT!?”
He cried out, bopping Gamakichi on the head.
“Gah!”
Gamakichi fell off the bed before quickly jumping back up to land
lightly on the white sheets. “What the hell was that for?”
“What the hell do
you mean, constipated?! I was glaring, G-L-A-R-I-N-G!” Naruto
seethed.
Gamakichi looked
unimpressed. “Sure Naruto-niisan. Whatever you say.”
“'Che.”
Naruto crossed his arms and sniffed disparagingly. “Did he get
the letter?”
“Yeah. But I didn't
hang around.”
“Oh.” Naruto
frowned. In hindsight, maybe it hadn't been such a good idea to write
that note. But he'd just been so angry, and frustrated. “Maa,
maybe if I'm lucky he'll forget all about it then.”
“Yeah right.”
Gamakichi scoffed. “And you're a genius.”
“Aa.” Naruto
nodded, then his eyes went wide. “Eh? Oi. That was mean.”
The frog shrugged before
disappearing with a puff of smoke, his last words hovering in the
air. “Yeah. But true.”
::
Three weeks later Naruto
had long forgotten about the letter. He and Sakura were entering into
the upcoming Chuunin exam with Ino as their temporary teammate.
Chouji didn't want to take the exam again yet, but Ino was not going
to allow her rival to advance before her.
It was hell.
Naruto sat down at the
bridge where Team 7 normally met up, the ringing cries of his two
argumentative teammates echoing loudly in his poor beleaguered ears.
Shit. Were Sasuke and I ever this damn loud? Naruto wondered
to himself, a sullen look of forced and very faked relaxation on his
face. His left eye twitched every so often, belying his adopted calm
facade.
If there was something
Sakura-chan and Ino loved better than arguing Naruto still hadn't
discovered it yet. Out of a sheer desperate sense of
self-preservation he'd started sneaking to the meeting spot in the
mornings, abandoning his regular greeting of a loud, shouted
'Sakuraaaa-chaaaan'. A single pounding he could handle, but there was
no way in hell he was going to get between them. Naruto
shuddered just thinking about it.
“Yo.” For
once Kakashi's arrival went unnoticed. The copy-nin glanced down from
his perch on the railing of the bridge. Naruto was curled up with his
hands over his ears staring purposefully at the wooden slats below
him, while opposite them both stood Sakura and Ino, the two girls
sending literal sparks back and forth between their burning eyes.
Kakashi sighed. For some
reason he was sorely missing the 'good ole days'. Leaning down,
Kakashi tapped Naruto on the shoulder, holding a finger over the
mouth area of his mask, warning against sound. When Naruto stood
Kakashi whispered slowly, trying not to alert the girls. “Hokage-sama
wants to see you.”
Naruto looked suspicious,
a usual 'Eh?!' on the tip of his tongue, but that was quickly
suppressed. With a short nod Naruto left, at a much slower pace than
he would normally have gone.
When he got to the Hokage
tower, Naruto found the Godaime anxiously pacing back and forth.
Tsunade looked relieved when she spotted Naruto staring at her,
looking wary at her uncharacteristic behaviour.
“You wanted to see
me old hag?” Naruto asked, staying well back out of range of
her fist.
Tsunade nodded. Then she
frowned. “I know you're going to be participating in the
upcoming Chuunin exam with Haruno-san and Yamanaka-san, right?”
At Naruto's nod she continued, “Well, would you consider not
entering in this one, but waiting 'til the next one?”
“What!?”
Tsunade turned to the
desk and picked up a slim scroll, throwing it to Naruto. “Read
it.”
Naruto unrolled the
scroll, reading parts of it aloud. “...recruiting...new
plans...all nine members on the move...Uchiha Itachi...eh? What the
hell is this?”
Tsunade shook her head.
“We've had word from our spies. It seems as though the Akatsuki
are definitely on the move – and they're heading here, to
Konoha.”
“That's bad, isn't
it?”
“Yeah.”
Tsunade held her hand out for the scroll, which Naruto passed back.
“I don't know exactly what they're planning, but at the rate
they're moving, they'll be here in time to interrupt the exam.”
Naruto shrugged. “Let
'em. I'm not going to hide. And anyway, they'll get me no matter what
I do. If I hide from them, all that's saying is that I'm scared of
them. I'm not going to do that. They're coming after me regardless,
right? So, we'll give them a hard time. In the chuunin exam I'll be
surrounded by enemies, but I'll also be surrounded by other entrants.
It'll make their job harder.”
“I thought you'd
say that.” Tsunade sighed. “Look. There's not a lot I can
do, so I'm going to have Jiraiya stay and keep an eye on things. I'm
also going to keep you here, there are a few jutsu I want to teach
you, which could help hide you. Maybe not to the Sharingan, but it'll
help keep you safe from the other members of the Akatsuki.”
“Uh...huh...what
kinda jutsu?” Naruto asked, his face twisting in wary
confusion. Tsunade wasn't known for easy jutsu.
“My seal for one. A
genjutsu to hide your appearance for another. Maybe a few smaller
ones designed to hide you and your chakra, just in case they follow
you.”
“You mean your
Genesis seal?” Naruto couldn't prevent the look of shock on his
face. “I can't do that!”
Tsunade frowned. “Why
not?”
“Whaddaya mean 'Why
not?', that seal took you years to power enough to be used!
The chuunin exam is in less than a month!” Naruto yelped, then
shouted, waving his arms emphatically to make his point.
“Naruto, compared
to you, I have the chakra of a newborn babe. You have enough chakra
to not only power this jutsu, but to enhance it – with no cost
to your own life thanks to the Kyuubi.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, 'Oh.' is
right.” Tsunade rolled her eyes and leant against the desk.
“I'm going to give you the day off to move your things into the
antechamber off of this room. I want you where I can keep a close eye
on you, and you'll need to be able to work on the jutsu until you
drop, if you want them to be perfect in time for the exam.”
“Why? It's not like
I live miles away!”
“Naruto.”
Tsunade growled warningly.
“Uh...heh.”
Naruto saluted. “Gotcha old hag. I'll start moving at once.”
“Kakashi will help
you.”
“No.” Naruto
looked deadly serious suddenly.
“Why? He is
your team instructor, right?” Tsunade asked, confused.
Naruto snorted.
“Instruction I'll accept from him. But I won't have him in my
home.”
“Why?”
Tsunade looked utterly bewildered.
Naruto looked away,
crossing his arms. “None of your business.”
“Fine, fine.”
Tsunade waved Naruto away. “Best get started then, I want you
moved in by tonight.”
::
The antechamber was in
reality quite a large set of rooms built behind and up the Hokage
tower. It had three empty chambers, a
kitchenette-cum-cosy-dining-room, a bathroom, a toilet, a small
open-plan seating area with a connected small room used as a library
and up a flight of stairs there was a small balcony with plants,
seating and a roof.
One chamber had a few
cushions in various colours, mostly covered in dust. The walls were
painted in a soft silvery colour that could have been blue had it
been any darker. The floor was a smooth wood, polished to a high
shine in the places covered by the cushions, dull and brown where the
dust had been able to settle.
This was the room Naruto
chose. It was bigger than his entire apartment put together, not to
mention the view from the floor to ceiling windows was to die for.
The view stretched out across the side of the cliff and encompassed
the whole range of the forest leading off into the distance. Not much
of the actual village could be seen, unless you leant out out the
window, but from where he was standing the view was amazing.
A quick 'Tajyuu Kage
Bunshin no Jutsu' later and Naruto had well over a hundred clones
crammed in the room, all holding tools to clean, polish, buff and
touch up the room. Less than three hours later a multitude of pops
filled the air as the clones dispersed, their work done.
After a quick drink of
water, Naruto opened the bag with the scrolls Tsunade had given him.
They were marked plainly with bed, mattress, dresser, wardrobe,
desk, chair, bedding, comforts, essentials and work. Each
scroll opened and unsealed the items with a small pop and puff
of smoke. Naruto left his own personal items in the room below. There
was no point in bringing them up until he had somewhere to start.
The bed frame was big and
wooden. It was low down and had overhanging sides. There was a
depression in the centre for a double-sized mattress, so Naruto
opened that scroll next, and true enough, the mattress fit in it
perfectly.
The bedding scroll was
opened next, and unfortunately for Naruto, it opened directly above
him. Well, in actual fact the scroll held so much it toppled over the
moment the seal dumped them out. Sheets, blankets, duvets, pillows,
pillowcases, a long decorative silver, blue, red and purple bolster
pillow, a multitude of different-sized cushions, three rugs, two in
subdued blue-sea-green and silver tones, one in a much darker black,
blue and oddly enough pale green mix, curtains, and even a massive
wall hanging fell out.
It didn't take long for
Naruto to set the room up, leaving the essentials and work
scrolls for when the room was to his liking. The essentials
scroll turned out to hold clothes, shower/bath toiletries, including
a brush, needle and thread and a massive first-aid kit, which,
funnily enough, had a big bag of coffee beans.
The work scroll contained
six different sizes of blank scrolls in varying amounts, four
notebooks, two binders, a sheaf of lined paper, a sheaf of blank
paper, a scroll of empty paper larger than even himself, pens, a long
roll of brushes and a wooden box the size of a chest with paints in
black, red, blue, green, white, silver, purple, gold and brown. Oh
yeah. It also had a set of shelves, shelves which fell on Naruto when
the scroll opened, leaving him to nurse a bruised head as he set the
shelving up and relocated the items to both the desk and the shelves.
Naruto moved in the
personal items he'd brought with him, mainly his plants, sleeping
cap, bags and bags of his precious cup ramen, his calendar of
swimwear girls, most of which he'd used as inspiration at one time or
another, his Leaf insignia poster, pictures, alarm, clothes he didn't
dare leave behind, but wouldn't wear around his friends, his jewelry
(which he'd never own up to owning), hair gels, dyes, skin paints and
other cosmetics he used to change his appearance.
Then there was his
armour, his armour and weapon repair and
maintenance kit, his home backpack, his mission backpack, his spare
backpack, (black, grey and grey respectively), his training equipment
(light only) and training scrolls, and his mementos from his
missions, like the pieces of Haku's mask, and the beads he wore in
his hair, his hitae-ate and Zabuza's, the kunai Zabuza used to kill
Gatou, plus smaller items from other missions.
The items he'd kept from
his mission to the Water Country were the most important to him. Not
only had Haku taught him an important lesson, but he also never
wanted to forget him, his pain, his resolve and his compassion, nor
his love for Zabuza, the kind of love which made a person stronger
and weaker.
Naruto kept those
items in a special sealed metal box which fit under his bed.
His other small mementos,
like the glittering strip of fools gold he'd found on a trip with
Jiraiya, and the large quartz chunk which reflected light in shades
of amythest and pink, or the rather grotesque statue an overexcited
Lord from one of the small towns he'd stopped at had gifted him when
he and Jiraiya had managed to stop some thieves from killing him, as
well as a few tourist souvenirs he'd won in various places took pride
of place along one wall, whether on small decorative shelving units
amidst his plants, or hung on their own on that one wall.
“It doesn't look
too bad in here, brat.”
Naruto stood up and
brushed off the knees of his trousers, rubbing, annoyed, at the
streak of grey-brown dust that wouldn't budge. “Hey
ero-sennin.”
Jiraiya frowned, stepping
forward and bopping the blonde over the head. “Oi. Don't call
me that, brat.”
“Then stop calling
me a brat!” Naruto argued.
“I'll stop calling
you a brat when you stop acting like one...brat.” Jiraiya
chortled at the narrow-eyed look of frustration on Naruto's
expressive face.
“Ero-sennin,
ero-sennin, ero-sennin!” Naruto countered in a sing-song voice,
dodging Jiraiya's fist and sticking his tongue out at the Sannin.
“Stop it you two.”
Tsunade stepped into the room, looking over everything critically.
“Not bad.” She checked the dresser drawers and the
wardrobe, opening even the small drawers in the desk. “So you
can be neat when you want to.” Tsunade said dryly.
Naruto shrugged.
“So, do you like
the room then?”
“Yeah.”
Naruto stared at the window, a smile on his face. “I like it.”
He cocked his head to one side. “Ne, Tsunade-baachan, why'd
that scroll have clothes in it?”
“Did you open it?”
Tsunade asked.
“Yeah. And?”
“And what? Or
didn't you notice what half of them were?”
Naruto looked confused.
“They were clothes,” he clarified, “clothes that
actually fit.”
“Yes, and as my new
apprentice I'm going to be closely monitoring your well-being and
material needs. Your clothes, and yes, I know you prefer bright
colours, are going to be ruined during our training, so I made sure
you had enough spare.” She raised a brow at him. “Unless
you'd prefer to walk around naked?”
Naruto scowled and
murmured something that sounded remarkably like 'perverts' to
her. “Oi. Why didn't ero-sennin ever buy me stuff like that
then?”
Tsunade smirked and
slanted an amused glance at the now embarrassed Toad hermit. “That's
because Jiraiya's a skinflint.”
“Oi!” Jiraiya
pasted a patently false look of indignation and hurt on his face.
“Tsunade-chan! I'm deeply hurt. How could you say such a
thing?”
“Eh...it's true
though. You even spent my savings.” Naruto stuck his
tongue out and blew a raspberry in Jiraiya's direction.
“Eh...heh...heh...”
Jiraiya had the grace to blush and look truly embarrassed then.
“Right, Naruto. Get
changed into something you won't mind losing and meet me outside.”
Tsunade turned to the small blonde, who nodded and gave her a cheeky
salute. “And you,” she said to the white-haired man, “get
lost while I teach my new apprentice.”
Jiraiya grumbled but
obeyed, following Tsunade out of the room and leaving Naruto alone,
who quickly shucked off his orange outfit and pulled on an old ratty
blue t-shirt and a pair of orange trousers darned so badly and so
many times they looked like a demented spider had tried to nest on
them.
Naruto made it outside to
the circular roof-top balcony beneath the cliff faces in just under
four minutes, not bad considering he stopped to actually put his
clothes in the laundry basket first. After he spent two minutes
looking for it.
“We've got about
three hours until dinner, so I'm not going to give you too
much to do.” Tsunade said. “I'm going to teach you how to
create a Genesis seal, one which can be used as a low-powered
battery. It's a variation of my own, and doesn't take much to create
or power, so it'll be good practice.”
Naruto nodded. “'Kay.”
“First, take off
your hitae-ate, I'm going to need to be able to see your seal.”
Tsunade instructed. “Good. Now, slowly pull up a little bit of
your chakra, it hasn't got to be a lot, just enough to mark the area
you intend to use.”
“Got it.”
“Good.”
Tsunade said in approval. “Here's the hard part. I'm going to
make some seals. You have to memorise them while concentrating on
that little bit of chakra. Focus your mind onto the chakra right
here,” she tapped a spot on Naruto's forehead with a finger,
“and keep doing the seals until they become instinctive. You'll
know when it's the right moment, and when you do focus as much chakra
as you can into both the seals and your forehead. Okay? The seal is
'Ninpou! Souzou Saisei no Tate!' (Ninja Technique:
Genesis Regeneration Shield).”
Naruto smiled and nodded.
“Yep. Got it.”
Tsunade went through the
seals, giving Naruto enough time to follow them, her movements
speeding up slowly with each repetition until both of them could
follow the seals at breakneck speed and with their eyes shut. Tsunade
could feel the chakra building in Naruto, a soft blue glow beginning
to seep out of his skin and encompass him completely.
Then there was an
enormous flare of chakra and Naruto shouted “Ninpou!
Souzou Saisei no Tate!” and a violet diamond with a
small circle on each horizontal point shimmered into being in the
centre of his forehead.
Naruto panted harshly,
feeling like he'd been running a month-long marathon. He sat down
heavily.
Tsunade beamed. “Well
done Naruto! You did the first part brilliantly!”
Naruto looked up. “First
part?” he squeaked out.
“Well yeah, didn't
you know.” Tsunade shook her head. “That part of the seal
doesn't really do anything except store excess chakra and the chakra
you put into it yourself. You can draw on it slightly, but that's
all. Well, at least until we complete the second part.”
Naruto groaned, but he
pushed himself up to his feet anyway.
“The second part of
the seal includes you placing a fully intact and healthy imprint if
yourself into the seal. This –”
“How?” Naruto
interrupted.
“How what?”
“How do I put an
imprint thing in there?” Naruto asked.
Tsunade shrugged. “You
only have to map out each cell in your body with a single strand of
chakra, convert it into a chakra map and then change it into a second
layer of the seal, since you won't want to draw on it each time you
use the seal.”
Naruto looked blankly
confused. “Eh? You lost me at 'map'.”
Tsunade sighed. It was
going to be a long day. Maybe she'd have to teach him about the human
body first.
