Naruto wasn't sure how, or why, but it was happening.
It had been almost three years.
And now...
Now...
Uchiha Sasuke was standing right there in front of the gates of Konoha, blocking the middle of the road, hands at his sides as the rain soaked his clothes. No one was moving. Even the guards at the gate. Even the ANBU hidden to keep watch as well. They were too surprised to do anything either, he guessed.
Even his own feet wouldn't move, no matter how hard Naruto tried; no matter how much he wanted to run at the young man and punch him as hard as he could. He was sure the sole reason for the rebellion of his legs was the look on the dark youth's face. The black eyes watching him, and only him.
"...S..Sasuke.."
He gulped, his voice much more wavery than he would have liked it to have been. The dark runaway nin didn't move, and niether did his gaze. It had barely been a week since that brief encounter with the Uchiha heir in the destroyed Sound encampment, but it had still felt like years since he'd seen him. His mouth flapped, reminiscent of a fish out of water for a while before Naruto finally shut his mouth, his jaw clenching as he swallowed heavily.
"....Naruto." Sasuke finally said after what seemed like hours of silencebut couldn't have possibly been more than a minute, and the blonde felt the attention of dozens of eyes flit over to him. There was another moment where the only sound was that of the rain, even the bustling of the shopping district where people went on, oblivious of the dark-haired youth's return, was muted out by the sound of water hitting earth and stone. The missing-nin inhaled, lifting his head slowly with a slight tilt before disappearing into the trees by the path, and just as suddenly, everything rushed back to life. The jounin guards gave a sharp shout, and the ANBU disappeared into the trees after the youth. He would not get away twice.
Naruto stood for a moment, stunned, the entire event barely even registering as real in his mind until he saw a group of jounin running toward the gate entrance over the rooftops. He saw a shock of silver hair, and blue eyes widened suddenly before he spun on his foot and bolted for the entrance himself, hitting the forest before the guards could even think to stop him.
The others would think this was a diversion. That Sasuke was sent ahead of Orochimaru and his army of nin.
But he knew. Somehow, he knew that Sasuke had come alone. There was no one half a day behind, no one hiding in the trees. The look in dark eyes had laid that out plain to see.
Luckily, Naruto knew Sasuke and the way he moved far better than Konoha's ANBU did. Especially on this path. He was sure the other remembered it. Even if Sasuke had been carried in a crate at the time, he was sure that the raven-haired nin knew exactly which way to go.
He breathed a little easier as he caught sight of a white gi clinging to a soaked body a few yards ahead of him, and while he knew that the ANBU hadn't caught up to him yet, he also knew they couldn't be far behind. The thought made Naruto's own feet move faster, propelling himself from branch to branch more quickly than even an average ANBU cell member would be able to keep up with. Not surprisingly, Sasuke was managing to keep at least a yard ahead of him even with that insane speed.
The trees gave way to a clearing that the both of them cut through in no time at all, the trees on the other side uncovering a tunnel that after three years had become too small for them to step through without ducking slightly, and finally to the river. When they finally came to a stop, Sasuke didn't turn around for a moment, and Naruto took that moment to catch his breath, his chest heaving. When he glanced up, he could see Sasuke shaking with each heavily inhaled breath as well. The journey that had taken days last time had just now only taken from mid-morning to dusk, and Naruto could tell that the Uchiha heir was just as exhausted as he was from the run.
Naruto found himself staring at the other nin, the rain near-freezing to his warmed body as it pelted the both of them steadily, never letting up. "..This.. It's just like back then.." His gaze fell again on Sasuke, and he blinked to find Sasuke staring stubbornly at the water below the statue, the sound of the waterfall meshing with the sound of the rain.
"H..Hey, um.." Sasuke spoke abruptly, and trailed off in the same way. His shoulders rolled unsteadily, and a shaky hand lifted to run pale fingers through soaked black hair before he managed to continue. "..Sorry for this."
He was silent after that, and Naruto couldn't help the raise of his brows, bright blue eyes narrowing just slightly. "...This?"
"Um.. This." Sasuke scowled at himself, at his seemingly unbidden inability to speak, and he dropped his hand testily, still not looking at the blonde. His eyes were on a bloodstain that had been baked into the rock three summers ago. He resisted the urge to scuff at it with the bottom of his sandal. "...I mean, it's not like this is anything important, or whatever. In a few weeks, it won't even matter... But.." He trailed off again, the look on his face softening, and the simple gesture of letting his facial expression slip like that caused Naruto's eyes to widen.
The blonde slid one foot forward slowly, and on instinct, Sasuke pulled one step back. "..Sasuke.." Naruto started, his brows furrowing slightly. "..Sasuke, you..." He stopped when Sasuke opened his mouth again, nearly missing what the raven was saying under the rush of the rain. Not that Sasuke was helping, barely speaking above a whisper.
"..I've... Liked you. Since before..." His eyes trailed to the blood spatter again, and this time, he shifted his foot to cover it with his sole before finally looking up to the other genin. Naruto's eyes widened further, the whites around sky blue plainly viewable. His mouth flapped wordlessly, and dark brows furrowed against a pale forehead as Sasuke lifted a hand to rake his fingers roughly through his hair, already knowing the incomprehensible word that Naruto was trying to get out. "..Just... Don't make me say it over and over again. I just..." He swallowed, licking his lips "..Like you."
Naruto stood still for a long while, his lips hanging open before pulling into a soft, wide smile. "You don't need to repeat yourself.." Black eyes darted to look into his own, and Naruto smiled wider despite the pleasant warmth that had spread through his cheeks at Sasuke's blunt confession out of nowhere. "..I heard you the first time." He spoke in almost a whisper himself now, and the pair studied eachother quietly for a while before something in Sasuke's eyes changed, and before he could look away from the blonde again, Naruto had thrown caution to the wind and was on him in a second. His mouth pressed harshly against the missing-nin's own, and Sasuke gave a surprised grunt that melted into a content groan when Naruto's tongue wormed it's way into his mouth.
When they parted, Sasuke's breathing was a little ragged, and he stared at half-lidded blue orbs for a moment before breathing out. "...Naruto.."
The blonde's smile lit up his face, and he mumbled back, one hand moving to comb through the hair at the base of the other's skull. "..Sasuke." His smile widened to a grin, and Sasuke breathed out again sharply. A pair of pale hands trapped Naruto's face between them, and Sasuke closed the gap between their mouths again. It was Naruto's turn to grunt, and his free hand slid over the ebony-haired ninja's hip, grasping the cloth under his fingers almost shakily. Something prickled at the back of Naruto's skull, and he slid his lips reluctantly away from Sasuke's own to glance backward. "...Sasuke-"
The dark ninja let out a slow breath, licking his lips and furrowing his brows. "...I know. They're gaining. C'mon." He moved to grab both of Naruto's hands, plucking one off his side and untangling Naruto's fingers from his hair before tugging and taking a step back, ready to turn and run again. His eyes snapped open a little wider when the blonde didn't budge. Glancing back at Naruto, Sasuke furrowed his brows. "...Naruto. Come on. If we stay here, they'll find us."
"Come back, then. Come back to Konoha," The blonde answered, licking his own lips quickly before glancing back, then to Sasuke again. "Let them catch us. You have the chance to come back home now, Sasuke..." He trailed off slowly to the look on the other's face, and Naruto gripped the hands in his own gently, frowning. "..Sasuke..?"
"...I can't, Naruto." Sasuke shut his eyes, but still knew when Naruto had made a face and opened his mouth to argue, interrupting the blonde before he could. "I can't go back. Not now. Not when I'm so close. Itachi.. That man will die at my hands if I let Orochimaru take me."
"If he takes your body, Sasuke, it won't be you killing him! Don't you get it?!" Naruto butted in when he had the chance, gripping Sasuke's hands tightly. "Orochimaru's going to kill you when he takes you! Who's to say he'll even risk his brand new body just to go and kill your brother?!"
"Who in Konoha has ever even offered me that much?" Sasuke snapped, yanking his hands away from the blonde's own testily. "Even if he doesn't, I will die with the belief that he will, and I did all that I could to help with that goal." Sasuke took a step back, and when Naruto reached a hand out for him again, Sasuke jerked further back, turning away from the other ninja. "...I didn't come to argue with you about this, dobe. I've said what I wanted to say already. Orochimaru will have his technique ready within the next week. So this is goodb-" His words were cut off by a weight tackling against his back, and he wouldn't have tumbled off the edge in surprise if he hadn't heard the mumbled, shaky voice in his ear.
"D-don't say that. Don't say that, Sasuke." The arms that had slid around his waist tightened, and Sasuke shut his eyes to the sick feeling of falling toward the feet of the statue.
"Naruto-"
"I'll save you."
