ANGST, mild OOC, ANGST, VIOLENCE, ANGST

All tenses are deliberate... most errors are deliberate... the really stupid ones are my-bad. I've always wanted to write this kind of story. Let's just say my supply of dark chocolate ran out.

Kabuto would ask him the same question every so often, and Orochimaru would always deliver the same answer, not one bit perturbed by his loyal companion’s doubt.
“I need him, Kabuto-kun. You understand.”
“Yes, Orochimaru-sama.” But even as Kabuto replied Orochimaru saw the underlying hurt in those dark brown eyes.
“If I truly want to defeat Konohagakure and all of my opponents,” Orochimaru added patiently, “then I must use that boy.”
Orochimaru would never tell Kabuto exactly why Sasuke was so important, though. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust the grey-haired shinobi; Orochimaru simply liked the element of surprise. Being a good shinobi, after all, was rooted in one’s ability to surprise one’s enemies (and occasionally, your teammates), and Orochimaru was an exceptional shinobi, if he did say so himself. Thus, his true motifs for choosing Sasuke as his next vessel would remain a secret, if he could help it, until the opportune moment would arrive.

Four years and two run-ins with Itachi later, Sasuke had been quite willing to surrender his body to Orochimaru. Sasuke had been reluctant – Orochimaru had seen that the boy clearly had too much left to do – but had otherwise allowed the snake sannin to perform the jutsu. Sasuke had left his body with a whisper of a name, but Orochimaru had been unable to hear it.
Sasuke’s body felt better than it looked. The perfect, pale skin combined with the perfect body made Orochimaru more than a simple shinobi, and with the power of the Sharingan he knew he could bring the entire world to his knees. Itachi would not be able to defeat him. Madara would not be able to touch him. Naruto, along with the Kyuubi, would fall at his feet. Had Sasuke had the ambition – his eyes unclouded by the hate for his brother – he could have easily controlled Orochimaru as well.
Pity, Orochimaru had thought as he had first gazed into the mirror reflecting his new body, you could have easily killed your brother on your own, had you known what I know.

Orochimaru cried after he had plunged his left hand through Naruto’s chest, though he had no emotional attachments to the boy. Naruto had known it had been Orochimaru in the guise of his best friend but hadn’t been able to deliver the fatal blow. He had had openings – too many, much to Orochimaru’s chagrin upon later reflection. Though he had had the chakra of the Kyuubi, Naruto had remained as himself, and Naruto had always been a shinobi who fights more with heart than intelligence.
“You foolish boy,” Orochimaru murmured, his voice breaking with involuntary sobs. “You stupid little – ” But a lump in his throat halted any further insults and his eyes burned, and Orochimaru started clawing at his bleeding arms. “What is wrong with this damn body?” he shouted, falling to his knees beside Naruto, who looked considerably weaker than he had a minute ago. Orochimaru had hit struck too near the heart and had severed the chakra points leading to it. Kyuubi’s chakra couldn’t heal him now.
“At least… I’ll see him again,” Naruto whispered around the blood oozing from his mouth. Orochimaru looked at him, looked into those sad blue eyes, and saw Sasuke’s reflection there. He touched the wound on Naruto’s chest, collecting the blood onto his hand, and stood. He watched until he could no longer see nor feel Naruto’s chakra.
“He won’t be where you’re going, Naruto-kun.”
Sasuke’s body refused food for days.

Orochimaru conquered Konohagakure a month later. The village fell easily enough, and with not much trouble on Orochimaru’s part. His body did what he told it to do and without many complaints. The pain he had felt was purely from severing his own relationships. Tsunade died protecting Jiraiya. Jiraiya died protecting the village. Leaves would no longer grow in the new Village of Sound.

The battle with Itachi went differently from what Orochimaru had been expecting. Itachi said nothing. Orochimaru said nothing; he simply did what Sasuke had wanted him to do.
Orochimaru had no ill feelings towards Itachi, unless jealousy and fear counted for something. In Akatsuki he had always felt that Itachi was someone to be wary of. Itachi was an Uchiha; he had killed a group with the same bloodline as himself; he had the cursed eyes that could see through souls and into the future. Orochimaru had thought that Itachi was more powerful than the Leader, but then he had learned of Sasuke, the only “survivor” of the massacre. Since then, Orochimaru had known that there was a weakness in Itachi, and the great Uchiha wasn’t so invincible anymore.
Orochimaru’s brief recollection allowed Itachi to find an opening and pin him to a tree. Orochimaru hissed in indignation, the wound on his side throbbing under the pressure of Itachi’s weight. Itachi loomed before him (Sasuke’s body was still shorter than his brother’s) and Orochimaru glared, not afraid enough to struggle for fear of his life. The tomoe of Itachi’s Sharingan widened and lengthened to form the blades of the Mangekyuu. Orochimaru felt his own eyes respond.
It distracted Orochimaru from what would come next. His head thumped against the rough bark of the tree as Itachi suddenly swooped forward and captured his lips in a rough kiss. The invading tongue quickly pried his lips apart to explore further inside. Orochimaru felt like Itachi had done this before; for his body started responding almost immediately. Itachi tasted like blood and poisonbut Orochimaru continued to suck on Itachi’s tongue as if he couldn't get enough. He pushed Itachi away several moments later.
“I’ve always known, you know,” Orochimaru said, licking his lips to get the last remnants of Itachi’s taste. “I didn’t choose this body solely for the Sharingan.”
Itachi remained silent for a moment. Orochimaru was satisfied with the cut on Itachi’s cheek and the fact that Itachi had to fight sans Akatsuki cloak. His once porcelain skin was covered in dirt, bruises, and blood. Orochimaru had never been able to do the simplest of injuries in the past. Half of Orochimaru’s advantage came from Sasuke’s body and the Uchiha bloodline. The other half was freely given by Itachi, who must have known he had brought this unto himself by having deserted his brother in the first place.
But then Itachi’s perfect lips curved up in a smirk – the first expression of the evening – and Orochimaru panicked, though not completely knowing why. After all, Itachi always wore that look when Fate decided to become his bitch. “You can’t keep that vessel for long, Orochimaru,” Itachi said, his eyes roving up and down Sasuke’s body. There was something indecent in that gaze, and this was coming from Orochimaru, who had the sudden urge to put on three extra layers of clothing.
“What are you talking about?” he asked angrily. Orochimaru had learned long ago that Itachi never lied. How a criminal could have such a virtue, he would never know. Itachi was a mystery in a lot of ways, and proven right in most cases (if not all). Orochimaru had seen why Itachi had been a god among his clan, all the members – excluding Sasuke and Madara – of which had truly seemed pathetic in comparison.
“If I die,” Itachi explained calmly, coughing slightly; trickles of blood fell down the corners of his mouth but he quickly wiped them away, “then my brother’s body with eventually stop functioning.”
“It belongs to me, in case you’ve forgotten,” Orochimaru drawled, taking his kusanagi in hand. The thin, long blade gleamed in the moonlight. “I control it now.”
Itachi smiled, the light in his sharingan eyes becoming more eerie by the minute. “That’s where you’re wrong, Orochimaru. Every part of Sasuke is mine.”
Orochimaru, disconcerted by Itachi’s words, charged at the other shinobi. His took his sword and cut Itachi’s head clean off his shoulders, so that it fell not too far from the body. Orochimaru watched, amused, as the severed arteries squirted blood before ceasing altogether. Itachi’s lifeless body fell to the ground. Orochimaru took the fallen head and left the rest for carrion birds.

Kabuto healed his wounds – the young man’s technique was impeccable, but Orochimaru felt Sasuke’s body failing in some incurable way. The pain had spread from his chest to the rest of his body since his fight with Itachi three days ago. He coughed up blood – the metallic taste never left his mouth, and the sharingan had lost power. Orochimaru felt worse than when Sarutobi had taken the usage of his arms. His currently condition, he knew, would not be cured as easily, if at all.
He supposed he should have done more research on the damned Uchiha clan, most especially on the sons of the latest Uchiha chief. Sasuke had never mentioned anything about a bond with Itachi, but upon later reflection Orochimaru felt he should have known. The people of his world believed that a person was born with half a soul, only to be completed upon finding its other half.
“What luck,” Orochimaru mused weakly, “that I should have been involved in such a tragedy.”
Itachi had known he was dying. The presence of Sasuke’s body had only extended his existence for a short while longer.
Orochimaru had always known that Sasuke would be Itachi’s downfall…
But in his life… not in his death.

Kyuubi said it himself, the Uchiha blood is more cursed than he is. Forgot what manga chapter that is, but its when Naruto finds Sasuke after 3 years and Sasuke enters Naruto's mind...
