Sasuke rested his chin on his hand and stared out the window at the raging storm. Rain lashed against it and the wind crept through the tiny cracks. He could see a form walking towards the door and stood up. He held the door open but stood behind it so as not to get wet. Water poured across the tiled floor and he tiptoed through it as he shut the door.
*******
"Jeez thats one hell of a storm!" A familiar voice said. Other voices joined in agreement. Sasuke bolted the door shut and turned.
"Is the everyone?" He asked looking around the room.
"Yes its everyone... the Jounin went to the towns nearby to get everyone to safety...So its just us."
"Well then I guess that puts you in charge Gaara." Sasuke smiled checking off names on a list. Sakura wrung her hands together and played with her bottom lip before she sighed and threw her hands up.
"Sasuke! We... we cant find Naruto... do you know where he was going yesterday?" She asked worridly. Sasuke paused and looked blankly up at her.
"How should I know? He doesnt tell anyone anything anymore..." He mumbled going back to his check list.
"He went on a mission yesterday... to another town..." Neji spoke up.
"Kakashi-sensei told me... you think hes okay? Or should we go look for him?" He looked to Gaara.
Gaara shook his head,
"I think we should go after him... Naruto may be a ninja but... like I said this is one hell of a storm..." Sasuke frowned and glared at Gaara.
"Naruto is a completly capable ninja... he'll be fine! Right Sakura?" He asked turning to her. She hesitated but held her tongue at Sasukes glare.
"Y-yes.. he'll be.... okay..." She said with very little certainty. This storm was bad, and if Naruto for some reason hadnt made it to the town he would be caught in it on the road. She worried. She wanted to go find him. But Sasuke had been very protective of Naruto lately. Anyone who dissed him caught hell from Sasuke. She didnt know if they had bonded or what but no one understood why or when it had happened. She sat on the couch and kept her thoughts to herself.
*******
"Jeez thats one hell of a storm!" A familiar voice said. Other voices joined in agreement. Sasuke bolted the door shut and turned.
"Its almost as bad as that one two years ago eh?" Gaara pulled his shirt off and rung it out on the floor. It was already covered in water anyway. Sasuke looked at Gaara and sighed.
"I think this ones worse than that one actually. I dont remember the trees bending that far last time..." He said glancing out the window again.
"Huh... youre right... maybe it is worse... anyway we've got everyone so lets go gather candles before all the light is gone." Gaara turned but Sasuke grabbed his shoulder.
"Youve got everyone?" Sasuke asked seriously. Gaara sighed and faced him.
"Ive got everyone... I promise." He handed him a check list.
"If you dont believe me check the list..." He patted Sasuke on the back and then walked solemnly towards the closet hallway. The last storm had taken Naruto. They werent sure if it had killed him... but no one had seen him since. And he had never arrived in the town his mission assigned him to. So he was proclaimed as dead. Sasuke had taken it hard. He had blamed himself because he had told Gaara not to go looking for him and ignored it when people pointed out that had they gone it wouldve resulted in more deaths. Gaara hadnt pushed the matter, so Sasuke had blamed him a little as well. He had been confused and angry and upset for a long time. Eventually he forgot about it and apologized to everyone. Things had went back to normal... but Gaara knew Sasuke hadnt forgotten. He had just numbed the thoughts and feelings. But they were still there, they still existed. Gaara sighed.
[[Tonight we'll see how well you can keep them supressed... we'll see how strong you really are.]]
A hand lightly touched Gaaras shoulder and he shook the thoughts from his head. Temari looked worridly at him.
"Gaara... me and Sakura are a little worried about Sasuke... We were wondering if you would do us a favour?" Gaaras eyebrows raised and he crossed his arms waiting for her to continue.
"Well..." She went on when he didnt speak, "Just... stay with him...You know how far into depression he was those months afterwards... we think he might..." Gaara cut her off.
"You think he might spiral back down into it since tonight is like deja vu... Honestly..." Temari cringed, expecting him to decline, "I was thinking the same thing. Ill stay with him." Gaara smiled slightly and gave his sister a pat on her head.
"Thanks... we just dont want him to hurt by himself... and he wont let any of us near him. So... anyway dinner should be ready in an hour. Sakura and Ino are actually going to make food..."
"Uh oh... should I be afriad?"
"Id think so... very much so..." She laughed and walked back towards the kitchen. Gaara opened the closet door and grabbed a shirt. He pulled it over his head and closed the door back. Adjusting it he sighed and glanced over to Sasuke, who had went back to sitting on the window seat, chin in hand and eyes blankly watching the storm outside. Gaara sat down in a chair across from him and stared out the window as well.
-------
Sasuke noticed Gaara take the seat behind him. He watched his reflection for a moment and then let his eyes refocus on the storm outside. The house was built specifically for emergencies like this. It was for all shinobi to use as shelter when bad weather hit. It was made of sturdy stone and sat on completly flat land far from the river in case of flooding or errosion. Sasuke watched the raindrops streak the window and sighed. If he didnt stop sulking the others would bother him about being depressed, of course he thought it was perfectly normal to be depressed when you were the reason one of your friends was dead. But he really didnt feel like listening to their lectures and sympathy, so when Temari came back in to inform them dinner was ready he cheered himself up a bit, not to much because theyd get suspicious of that too, but he stopped sulking. He stretched and yawned before standing and smirking at Gaara.
"Ready for dinner?" Gaara returned his smirk.
"I dont know... Ino and Sakura made it..." Gaaras smirk turned into a smile when Sasuke stared wide-eyed at him.
"Uhh... isnt that a tad... dangerous?"
"Haha... maybe, I dont know we'll find out."
They walked into the dining area and took seats at the table next to one another. Sasukes eye twitched as he realised everyone, with the exception of Gaara, was watching him. No one said a word, it was like they expected him to say something before they could eat. He growled and looked them all in the eye, one by one. Grinning inwardly as they each looked away.
"Are we gonna eat or what?!" He said a little to angrily. Everyone jumped but still no one touched the food. Sasuke looked around in confusion, everyones eyes had turned to Gaara. Gaara smirked and looked down at his empty plate.
"If you guys think Im trying it first, think again..." Sasuke raised an eyebrow as Neji snorted back laughter. Sakura and Ino both looked ready to kill.
"Our cooking is NOT that bad! If you dont want it then you shouldnt have let us cook!" Sakura exclaimed while Ino nodded vigouriously.
"You didnt really give us a choice... you just said that you were cooking dinner and then got to it!" Kiba frowned and crossed his arms as akamaru barked in agreement.
"Well FINE then NO one eats!" Ino said sitting angrily back down with Sakura and pouting. Sasuke let a smile slip before turning it into a smirk and reaching out to get some food. Everyone watched him as he brought it to his plate and into his mouth. He chewed slowly, his bangs covering his eyes so no one could see his expression. He turned towards Ino and Sakura slowly as he chewed, they had their hands over their mouths expecting the worse, but were surpirsed. Sasuke swallowed and stuck his thumb in the air. Not a very Sasuke like gesture, they noted.
"Its good. Really good actually..." The girls blushed and squeeled in happiness and Sasuke put more on his plate and began to eat. He hadnt known it but he was really quite hungry, as he shovled rice in his mouth he glanced at Gaara and the others, who still hadnt tried anything. He stopped and blinked at them, mouth full and asked,
"Wha? S'good! You suld try schom!" He swallowed and looked at Gaara, who laughed.
"We were just waiting to see if you died..." Sakura launched a dumpling at his head but he easily dodged it. Everyone laughed, gathered food and began to eat.
-------
He had been injured bad. Not because of the storm but because enemy nin who were against his mission had attacked during it. Not only had he been outnumbered AND outranked by them, but they had the upperhand of being able to concentrate and see in 80mph winds and rain falling so hard that it felt like you were getting stabbed by a million kunai repeatedly. The lightning didnt help for sight because the rain was so thick he could barely see his hand in front of his face, the thunder was so loud that it deafened him temporarily everytime it rumbled. Kyuubi had been telling him to forgot the mission and go back for the past two hours, but he couldnt ditch a mission just because of some bad weather! Of course, he hadnt expected an attack so soon. He had fallen into a coma, and not even the kyuubi could help him. They told him, when he woke that they had found him in the woods, soaked to the bone, bleeding and unconsious. They had cleaned him, fed him the best they could and left him to sleep. He had been in a coma for 18 months. After he had woken he argued with the Kyuubi who felt like being stubborn and refused to heal him. It took a few days but he had convinced him and Uzumaki Naruto was fine within a week. The people of the village told him the story of how they found him, but none could explain how he had ended up that way. That memory was lost to Naruto forever. It didnt bother him much, it wasnt really something he wanted to remember anyway, what bothered him was that he had no way to repay the kindness the people in the village had shown him. Of course they had told him it was no problem, but if you have ever tried to argue with Uzumaki Naruto, you would know that its pointless. So he stayed in the village for an extra six months doing whatever he could until he felt it was an even trade. If the ninja in Konoha hadnt come looking for him in 18 months... then what was an extra six? Naruto took the pack offered to him and bowed slightly. His attention, however, was averted when a young man tapped him on the shoulder.
"Uzumaki-san... Are...are you sure you want to go back? Its been so much more tolerable with you here..." he stared at the ground a little sheepishly.
Naruto sighed and joined him in staring at the ground.
"You know... Ive really been thinking about that. I thought I had friends back home... friends that cared. But... not one of them has tried to find me, and when I think about it... theyve all got someone or something they care for more." his face was serious but filled with sadness.
"So, Suma-kun... I have to go back just to let Godaime know Im alive... and I cant stop being a ninja, but Ill come visit you whenever I can!" He grinned and patted the guys shoulder.
Suma grinned with him, but went back to staring at the ground.
"S..so could you stay... just a little longer?" he played with his fingers as he asked, knowing Naruto would say no.
"I would... but it would just make me want to stay longer..."
Suma nodded and blinked back tears. Only six months and this tall golden haired boy had been the best friend he had ever had. He hated to see him go, but he also knew that going back was something Naruto had to do and he knew he would be back. Uzumaki Naruto wasnt one to forget friends. Suma waved happily with the rest of the village as the watched Naruto turn slowly into an orange dot. He was the last one to leave, long after Naruto had disappeared. Slowly he turned away and walked back to his home, where he would patiently wait for his return.
-------
Naruto walked for three days straight without resting. He'd always had unbelievable stamina. The village of Konoha couldnt be that much further but he couldnt remember how long he had walked before the attack had happened, so he had no idea how long he had yet to go. On the fourth day rain poured and wind howled. It wasnt unbearable but he stopped anyway to wait it out. After two days it died down as the sun came up behind dark clouds. It was his sixth day and it was still raining but not the constant downpour that had hit the night before, he didnt walk long before finally the gates of Konoha loomed in front of him. He stared in awe at them, wide open and no ANBU standing gaurd. Naruto cautiously made his way through. The streets were flooded and deserted, no one was present. Naruto walked through the eerie ghost of a town and headed for the only place he could think of; Tsunade-baachans office. It worried him a little that no one was out on the streets and he wondered if everyone had had to evacuate for the storm. Sighing Naruto jumped in a puddle and watched as it rippled out. He looked up into the cracked glass of a window, his eyes widening at what he saw. His reflection stared back in awe. Naruto hadnt seen himself in two years, and the change in that short time was astonishing. His hair was sunstreaked and had grown down past his chin, the shortest parts in the front rested just under his eyes which were a much brighter blue. He had known about his hair of course, he had to shake it out of his vision every so often, but he had never seen it. His skin, in contrast, had darkened significantly and muscle was showing through. Naruto smirked and lifted his shirt, running his hand over the slightly raised abs there.
"For having been eighteen months in bed and only six outside working Id say I did a pretty good job." He grinned and dropped his shirt.
Naruto turned abruptly, he could feel someone else coming towards him. He wasnt really scared, this chakra felt familiar. He edged towards it slowly, not sure what to expect when Lee rounded the corner, arms out and prepared to fight. Naruto dropped his stance and was about to call out when Lees eyes widened. Lee aborted his fighting stance as well and stared in awe before his features took on a panicked look.
"Neji dont!!" Lee cried.
Naruto had just enough time to turn around and look into the milky white eyes of Hyuua Neji before he was hit multiple times all over his body. He felt his lung collapse and he gasped for breath. Clutching his chest he looked up into the horrified faces of his former friends and gave them the best toothy Uzumaki smile he could.
"Nice... to see you... again." He choked out before the darkness shrouded his mind.
-------
After dinner Sasuke hadnt stuck around for the small talk. He excused himself and went back to watching the storm. It was obvious he was lost in thought because he didnt notice the shift in chakra as Gaara slipped into the room with him. Sasuke leaned his head against the window and sighed, the window turning white at the contrasting temperatures.
"Naruto...." he whispered to himself as he drug his fingers down the window.
He shook slightly, out of anger or sadness Gaara couldnt tell, he just knew that Sasuke needed someone. But getting him to accept that would be the hardest part. Gaara sat behind Sasuke in a chair. He wouldnt approach him until the dark haired man pulled himself out of whatever memory he was lost in.
Sasuke closed his eyes and let a certain memory of Naruto leek slowly into his thoughts.
******
"No way... Im gonna do it!"
"Please dont!! Youll just hurt yourself and Ill have to fix you..." Sakura begged.
"HAHAHA!!! You wait and see!!!"
Sasuke peered over the edge and crossed his arms over his chest.
"You're really gonna hurt yourself dobe..." He smirked at the angered face Naruto was giving him and nodded,
"Its really not a good idea Naruto, its a really far drop. Listen to Sakura." She nodded vigourously in agreement.
Naruto looked defiantly at them both and tightened his hold on the rope.
"But youve forgotten one thing!"
and as Sakura and Sasuke looked at each other in confusion, Naruto jumped.
"Im Uzumaki NARUTO!" He let go of the rope and went flying into the air. His attempted flips looked more like flails and his graceful dive failed. He hit the water far below and his two friends watched in anticipation. It was a good 60 seconds before he surfaced and both sighed in relief.
"Baka!!" Sakura yelled angrily. She turned to a tap on her shoulder and glared at Ino.
"Geez calm down Sakura... I came to find you cause your mom is looking for you and I need your help really quick. Can you come?" She placed her hand on her hip and raised an eyebrow. Sakura sighed and nodded before turning to Sasuke.
"Can you keep and eye on it?" She asked jabbing a finger in Narutos direction. Sasuke sighed, nodded and started down the hill to find a less dangerous way to enter the water. Sakura watched him go before glaring at Ino.
"You better appreciate this... youre making me miss a WET Sasuke."
Sasuke sat at the edge of the lake and watched Naruto flail in the water like a drowning kitten.
"What the hell are you doing dobe?" he asked removing his sandels.
Narutos head bobbed up in the water to spare a glare for Sasuke.
"Im playing and enjoying the water, you know some humans do this, but you cant youd melt or malfunction or something. And STOP calling me dobe!!" He huffed and went back to his splashing.
Sasuke sighed, pulled his shirt over his head, his shorts from his legs and threw them up in a tree with Narutos clothes. He waded slowly into the water until it was up to his neck and then turned to glare at Naruto. Naruto grinned evilly and doggy paddled over to him, his hand raised, poised for splashing but Sasuke shot him a glare so heated he immediatly dropped it. Naruto frowned slightly and swam away from him. Pulling himself up on a rock he hugged his knees and looked out at the still water. Sasuke blinked at him, he had seemed down all week and Sasuke couldnt figure out why which was odd because Naruto was always easy to read. But he always caught the sadness in his eyes whenever Naruto was looking at him, which Sasuke found weird. Had he hurt him somehow and not known it? Sasuke moved slowly towards him carefully watching his face. Narutos usually bright eyes were dull and sadly focused on the water. Sasuke had long since figured out the one word that described the real Naruto...: Numb. Any feelings he had, any thoughts or dreams were pushed aside by his need to be accepted and recognized by everyone. He said he wanted to be Hokage someday, but did he really? Or was it a dream spawned by the neglect of his childhood. Sasuke could tell when Naruto pushed those feelings aside, when he wasnt really the happy self he always portrayed. But he didnt have the slightest clue as to how to get him to talk about it. He moved slowly and silently closer to Naruto, his eyes never leaving his face.
---------
Narutos chest hurt. It did that when he was sad, sometimes he thought talking would help but after considering it he decided that in the long run it would only hurt him more. He saw Sasuke slowly sidling his way towards him but didnt move. He wondered what Sasuke was thinking, was he just going to glare at him? Was he just going to continue as they were? This... 'friendship' wasnt really a friendship. They were always fighting against each other, they never had any real fun. They never played games together, they never did any of the stuff the other kids did. Naruto thought that maybe it was because of their irregular childhoods, but that would be all the more reason he should want a friend. He swallowed the lump in his throat and blinked back tears, missing one that escaped and ran down his cheek. One for that dream he thought would never come true. The dream that one day he would have a friend, a real one. Sure the kids he had grown up with were 'friends' but every single person had one person they held in higher regards... All Naruto wanted was to be that one to someone. He felt the tear fall and without warning jumped into the water hoping Sasuke had missed it. The water washed it away and he came up to look into the face of a very wet, and very angry looking, Sasuke. Naruto grinned.
"Got ya!"
---------
Sasuke hadnt missed the tear. And he knew now that Naruto was trying to hide it by acting obnoxious. But he had to admit, Naruto was damn good at hiding how he truly felt behind that wide grin. He didnt know why Naruto was so sad or why Naruto wanted to hide it so badly, but he wanted to find out. He grabbed Naruto and pulled him to him. His calm eyes stared into wide blue ones.
"Whats wrong Naruto... tell me." Sasuke held Naruto tightly. The blonde wiggled and tried to push himself away from Sasuke but Sasukes hands held him in place.
"Tell me Naruto and Ill let you go... Im your friend. I shouldnt have to do this to get you to talk to me." Narutos eyes widened and tears swam in them. Sasukes own eyes widened. He moved his face closer to Narutos, at that moment Sasuke wanted nothing more than make those tears disappear, make that face smile genuinly. It was then that Sasuke had realised he liked Naruto more than a friend. It was then that their lips brushed against one anothers, just an instant, and Sasuke knew. It was then... that Sasuke had pushed Naruto away at the calls from Kakashi. It was then that Sasuke had pushed Naruto away from him in fear. He couldnt care for another... Naruto would end up just like everyone else he cared about. Kakashi yelled from the woods above on the cliff. They had some meaningless missons to carry out. Missons that were carried out in an awkward slience with the exception of Sakura. Sasuke couldnt show or tell Naruto how he felt, so he pushed him away. It was the only thing he knew how to do. But since he couldnt be there WITH Naruto, when anyone talked about him or made fun of him Sasuke was there to defend him.
******
Sasuke sighed. He still didnt know what had been bothering Naruto that day, but he wished he hadnt pushed him away. It hadnt been long after that day that Naruto was sent on that stupid mission in the storm and Sasukes idea, that he would end up like the rest of the people he had cared for, was justified. He sighed, stood and began to walk towards the stairs. He stopped abruptly when he noticed Gaara sitting in a chair and took a moment to narrow his eyes at him.
"What are you doing there?" he spat angrily at Gaara.
Gaara just chuckled and stood to look him in the face. He didnt say anything, he wasnt sure how to approch this just yet. Sasuke turned and stomped up the stairs, Gaara followed more calmly.
Temari, along with Sakura and Ino, watched through a crack in the kitchen door.
"Dont worry... Gaara will make him talk." Temari reassured them.
"Im not so sure... Naruto is a touchy subject for Sasuke..." Sakura said with a hint of sadness in her voice.
"Oi! Girls get over here!" Kiba beckoned them over to the table. They sighed and sat with the others.
"Okay so the storm is supposed to last tonight and tomorrow. If its over by the day after tomorrow then we will have to go out and see if theres anyone hurt and bring them back here." Shikamaru told everyone.
"So Im assigning each of you to a section in pairs, does everyone agree?" He waited for them all to nod or answer in agreement before continuing.
"Good, You can all pick your own pairs. So do that now and then come to me and ill tell you your section." As they all rose he placed and hand on Neji and Lees shoulders.
"You two... I need you to do something else. I want you two to go out early, right at sunrise. Anyone that didnt evacuate the city has been advised NOT to leave their homes until a jounin tells them otherwise... I want you guys to start at the gates and search for enemies. Our gates are ungaurded right now and it wouldnt be hard for someone to get in. So anyone in the streets," He looked at Neji,
"Dont hesitate to take them down. The city people wouldnt disregard Godaimes orders." They nodded and Shikarmaru patted their shoulders.
"But dont get hurt!" They all chuckled and Shikamaru went about giving the others their section assignments.
Sasuke swung his door open and fell onto the bed. He buried his head in his pillow and closed his eyes. Sleep would probably not come to him tonight, so he just laid there.
Gaara untied his sash and sat his gourd outside of the room Sasuke had went in. He furrowed his brow in determination and went in. Sasukes head shot up at the intrusion.
"What do you want Gaara? Im really tired..." He lied.
Gaara sat gently on the edge of the matress and stared at Sasuke as he sat up.
"Whats wrong Sasuke? Tell me." Sasuke looked away, but Gaara noticed the tight fist Sasuke had wrapped in the sheets.
"Nothings wrong, Im just bored because of the weather and Im tired." He stood and Gaara stood with him, blocking the exit. Sasuke exhaled angrily and turned to the window. The storm had gotten worse he noticed. Sasuke started and his breath caught when he felt arms slide around him, hot breath on his cheek.
"Sasuke... you cant hide it from me. I can tell. So tell me... whats wrong?" Sasuke shook his head and pushed away from Gaara.
"Theres nothing wrong! Im just tired." He shoved Gaaras hands away as they atempted to embrace him again.
Gaara frowned and shook his head. He would try once more before forcing him to admit it.
His hand reached for Sasukes shoulder to turn him and bring them face to face. Sasuke whipped around and shoved Gaara hard into the wall, pinning him there by his shoulders.
"Leave me alone! Just let me sleep!!" He growled, his eyes narrowing even more at the smirk on Gaaras face. He twisted his fingers into the fabric of Gaaras shirt and shoved him again.
"Whats so funny huh?!"
Gaara brought his hands together and formed a seal. Sasuke coughed and waved the smoke away. But Gaara wasnt there anymore, in his place was the smiling tanned face of Naruto. Sasukes eyes went wide and his jaw dropped. He stared in awe at him. Slowly he brought his hand up and ran it over the whisker markings. His eyes shook slightly and Gaara could tell he was trying not to cry. He wrapped his arms around Sasukes shoulders and felt him quivering. Sasukes arms fell around him as he buried his face into Gaaras shoulder.
"Naruto... Im so sorry..."
Gaara stroked his hair,
"You know its not your fault... everyones been telling you that."
"But I was the reason..." He stopped.
"You bastard!!" He threw Gaara away from him and swung, but his emotions threw him off and he fell to the bed. He shoved a pillow against his face and let his guilt flow through him. Gaara, still as Naruto, sat next to him and rubbed circles on his back. Sasuke threw his arms around him and clung like his life depended on it. He finally let his sobs come out, what was the point in keeping them in? Gaara had already seen his emotions.
"Just for tonight..." Sasuke choked betweens sobs.
"Just for tonight, lay here with me and let me pretend... that youre him."
It made Gaaras heart hurt to hear the sadness in Sasukes words, but he agreeed. And for the entire night, Gaara stayed awake. He watched and listened to Sasuke sleep, stroking the dark hair that fanned across his chest. It took alot of chakra to stay as Naruto but he forced himself, making sure that before Sasuke woke he changed back and went to his own room.
