Chapter One: Back in Black
Yawning, Naruto slipped a thumb inside each scroll and
snapped his wrists, allowing the blue and white sheets to unroll. Bored
already, he tossed the two scrolls to the ground and watched them hiss and
billow with smoke.
As the cloud rose, a figure stepped out of the smoke and
smiled at the three ninjas standing before him.
“Well, congratulations again on passing the second part of
the Chuunin exam!” Iruka beamed with pride. “I’m sure all three of you are
proud to have come this far.”
WHUMP.
“...zzzzzzzzzz...”
Iruka blinked as the tall, boisterous blonde simply fell
backwards and lay spread-eagle on the ground, snoring loudly as soon as his
head hit the ground. A flush worked its way onto Iruka’s cheeks.
“Naruto!” He shouted, thoroughly embarrassed. “Wake up!”
Stifling a sigh, Sasuke strode up to the boy and stared down
at him. “Get up, Usurakontachi.” When he received no response, he frowned and
delivered a sharp kick to Naruto’s stomach. “Up!”
Grunting, Naruto sat up and glared at the Uchiha. “Hey, it’s
not my fault. We’ve passed the second
part of the exam HOW many times now??” Naruto leaned back, folding his arms
under his head. “I’m just tired of hearing the same damn speech every time we
finish!”
Sakura snickered. “Then maybe you should shut your big mouth
and actually pass for once, Naruto!”
Naruto gave her a sour look. “Hey, just because you got
closer than I did to passing last time doesn’t mean you aren’t in the same
boat, Sakura-chan!” He looked away, his lower lip jutting out in a disgruntled
pout. “Though why they keep trying to promote people who lose is beyond me,” he grumbled.
Sakura kicked him.
Aware that the situation was getting out of his control,
Iruka smiled sheepishly and ran a finger over the scar on the bridge of his
nose.
“Well, it’s true that you three may have heard me
congratulate you a few too many times, but...” He gave them a hopeful smile.
“At least you have another chance to pass, right?”
At that statement, Sakura gave a sharp nod and Sasuke’s eyes
narrowed. Naruto stared up at the ceiling, his face blank.
“Ne, Naruto?” Iruka stepped
forward. It’s not like him to be so calm
about all this. Is he really tired of taking the exam? “Isn’t that tr—”
Iruka stumbled to a halt in his speech when Naruto suddenly
bounded to his feet, both fists clenched.
“All right! This time I’m going to do it!” Grinning, Naruto pointed
forcefully at Iruka. “Just you watch, Iruka-sensei!! I’m going to pass!!”
The older man lifted his hands, sweat beading on his brow.
“Now, Naruto, don’t be so hasty—”
“Yatta!! I’m going to pass!!” His
energy recharged, Naruto started bounding across the room, pumping his fists in
the air. “Yes, yes, yes! I’m the greatest!!”
The other three watched him with varying degrees of
amusement. Iruka shook his head. Some
things never change, I suppose.
His eyes softening, Iruka gazed at the three Shinobi. Even
after all those years had passed, they were essentially the same. Sakura, who’d
bloomed into a rather pretty young lady, was still sending adoring glances towards
the impassive Sasuke. The Uchiha hadn’t so much as grown over the years as he
had elongated...his lean, slender frame leant to an air of delicacy over the
boy, though the few people misfortunate enough to mention that had earned the
coldest gaze of their lives. The biggest change in Sasuke over the years was
that his ability to hide his emotions had frayed; it wasn’t entirely unusual to
catch a glimpse of emotion on the normally cold boy’s face, which irritated
Sasuke to no end.
Naruto, however...
There were few people in the village who weren’t surprised
by the way puberty just up and decided to plant itself on Naruto one day in the
boy’s fourteenth year. In three years, the boy had sprouted, towering over the
Uchiha by a head and gaining at least a couple of inches on everyone else in
the village. Muscles had also decided to show up, snuggling contentedly on the
boy’s broad frame and lending themselves to Naruto’s newfound ability to
intimidate people with his size alone (the day he had figured that out was a day many people in the
village would rue forever).
Even with the physical changes, however, the number one
loudest, most surprising ninja had stayed exactly that. His energy still seemed
non-stop, he was overly ambitious, and he still couldn’t quite grasp the little
things, like the fact that an alarm clock that was smashed and thrown out the
window would not be up to waking its owner the next morning for a mission.
Shaking his head, Iruka turned towards the tremendous
meeting room for the third section of the exam.
“Well then, we’d better get moving. You wouldn’t want to be
late for the third exam’s speech, would you?”
Naruto paused in his efforts to bounce off the ceiling long
enough to smirk at Iruka. “I wouldn’t mind. I could probably quote Tsunade-baa-chan’s speech by now!”
Sakura rolled her eyes as the three turned to follow the Chuunin.
“I’d like to see that, Naruto. You’ve
never even paid attention to her speech.”
“I have, too! I just never look like I am.”
“Naruto, last year you started snoring before she even
opened her mouth.”
“Hmph. I was tired! A guy’s gotta get his sleep, doesn’t he?”
“Not in front of his superiors, he doesn’t!”
Glowering, Sasuke began to tune out his bickering teammates.
It was the same with every exam- Naruto complained, Sakura reamed him out, and
eventually Naruto would end up in a daze on the floor as the girl stomped away.
His mood soured as he thought about all of the failed exams. It was true that
he didn’t really care about becoming a Chuunin, but he’d always expected to be
promoted. He had the skill, he had the strength, and he had the mind, but every
damn time he’d taken the test, things had gone to hell. In the first exam, the
Sound tried to destroy Konoha, in the second, his seal had activated and he’d
been pulled out of the arena, then he’d been defeated by some weirdo from the
mist who managed to encase him in a solid block of fire-retardant ice (that one was embarrassing), and so on.
Gritting his teeth, Sasuke clenched his fists and took his place
in line in the tremendous room. Naruto and Sakura fell in behind him, falling
silent as they took in the sheer number of Genins that remained.
Naruto groaned under his breath. “With this many people
passing, we’ll have to do another preliminary round. I hate those fights! They take up so much damn time.”
Sasuke would normally tell him to shut up, but he couldn’t
help but agree. Preliminaries really did eat up a great deal of time,
especially when everyone was tired and hurt from the second, more treacherous
exam.
Naruto watched as Tsunade walked forward and began her
speech, dutifully tuning out as soon as the first word left her lips. His
thoughts happily skipped away, content to focus on who he could be matched with
and how much fun it would be to kick his or her ass. Would he fight a rookie?
Or would he get a veteran again, like Lee? Because his brain was so occupied,
he barely noticed when Genma, the third examiner, began his explanation of the
preliminaries and the names on the board began to flash.
I wonder if I can go
get ramen after this. Naruto’s grin widened. Yeah, I’ll get pork ramen. Three bowls of it. Then I’ll get one with
shrimp...oh hell, I’ll just get more pork ramen. Miso
pork! I can taste it now...so steamy and tasty...
“Naruto. Naruto!!”
“Eh?” Blinking, Naruto stared at Sasuke’s irritated/amused
face. “What’s your problem?”
“You’re up.” Lifting a finger, Sasuke pointed at the giant
screen above them. Naruto frowned, squinting at the names.
“I’m up first? That’s new. Who am I up against?” His eyes
scanned the name of his opponent...
...And read it again. And again.
“You’ve got to be kidding me!! I’m paired up with her??”
“You’ve got to be kidding me!! I’m paired up with him??”
Scowling, Naruto turned to face his opponent...
...Ino.
This is so lame!!
There’s no way that girl’s even going to be a challenge for me! Grumpily,
he stomped to the center of the hall. Oh
well, at least it should be an easy match.
Ino glowered right back at him. Of all people to be paired with, it had to be that loser. She
sighed. And as much as I hate to admit
it, he’s gotten a heck of a lot stronger over the years. Beating him won’t be
easy. At that thought, her eyes steeled. I’ll find a way to do it! Sasuke-kun is counting on me!
Smiling sweetly, she waved at Sasuke, though the boy didn’t
pay her any attention. I’ll snag you yet,
Sasuke-kun! Just you wait!
“Alright, everyone who isn’t fighting, please go upstairs to
watch.” Genma waited patiently as the other Genins trudged up the stairs, less
than thrilled about the pairing themselves. Word had gotten around that Naruto
was more resourceful than he looked, and they had been looking forward to see
if the rumors were true. How were they supposed to see a great fight now??
On the upper tier, Sakura leaned against the railing. “I
wonder how Ino’s going to try to defeat Naruto. She can’t exactly win with
brute force, and she doesn’t exactly have many ninjutsu techniques under her
belt.”
Sasuke folded his arms. I’m
more concerned with Naruto. He isn’t the kind of guy who would enjoy hitting a
girl, but he doesn’t have any techniques to defeat her that wouldn’t involve
hitting her. What will you do, Naruto?
The same thoughts were rolling through the disgruntled
blonde’s head. Muttering under his breath, he folded his arms. I guess I’ll just have to pin her down and
make her forfeit. That’s the only way to get out of this without actually
hitting her.
Genma glanced around, checking to make sure that everyone
was in place. “Very well then.”
He turned back to the two fighters.
“Hajime.”
Wasting no time, Naruto raced forward. Ino’s eyes widened
and she leapt just before the boy reached her, flipping over his head. Landing
unsteadily on her feet, she turned and faced him, her hands already forming
seals.
Skidding, Naruto spun about and placed one hand on the
ground to prepare himself for another charge. So long as I’m moving, she can’t use that
stupid Mind Transfer jutsu of hers. Keeping an eye on her hands, Naruto ran
to the side and hooked around, trying to find a way to get behind her. Ino
gritted her teeth, trying to focus her seal on him as he ran.
Damn him, he’s too
fast for me to get a bead on him. Her eyebrows lifted. Wait! I have an idea!
Her expression grim, she ran straight towards him.
Surprised, Naruto hesitated. She’s running towards me? But that’ll put her within striking range. He
shook his head. Oh well, it’s her loss.
Watching from above, Sasuke stifled a groan. That idiot has no idea what she’s trying to
do. He rolled his eyes. Well, if he
lets her beat him, it’ll just be his loss.
As they charged at each other, Naruto weighed his options.
If he pinned her with her facing him, he might have a problem. If he got behind
her, she couldn’t use her jutsu, right? Smirking, he copied her earlier leap
just before they reached each other and landed behind her, pivoting quickly. A
chuckle on his lips, he darted forward and slipped his arms around her, pinning
her arms to her sides.
“Well? Whatcha going to do now?”
He laughed softly. He felt her stiffen in his arms, and his smile simply
widened. “Give up?”
He blinked in surprise when she simply glanced at him over
her shoulder and smiled.
“I wouldn’t dream of it.” She slipped her hands behind her,
pushing him slightly away. Using that second of free space, she spun in his
arms and lifted her hands, forming her favorite seal.
“You lose, Naruto! Shintenshin no
jutsu!”
Naruto’s eyes went wide as he was slammed with Ino’s spirit.
Jolted, he could feel his consciousness slip away into darkness, hideous
laughter echoing around him.
Ino’s soul smiled triumphantly as she claimed control of
Naruto’s mind. Yes! Now that I have
control of his mind, I can... Her thoughts trailed off as she felt
something stir in the recesses of Naruto’s mind. What the hell?
Ino mentally took a step back as a pair of gleaming red eyes
appeared in the darkness.
“WHO ARE YOU??”
Wincing, Ino clapped her hands vainly over her ears. The
deep voice rumbled through her, shaking her to her core. What the hell is this? Does Naruto have a split personality or
something??
The eyes before her narrowed viciously.
“GET OUT!!”
Ino screamed as a tremendous red force came charging towards
her...and slammed into her.
The crowd watched with curiosity as both figures went slack
after Ino’s technique was performed. Naruto’s body twitched and began to smile.
Sakura sighed. “I guess that’s it for Naruto. I can’t
believe even he was caught by Ino’s techni—”
“GET OUT!!!”
The ground shook with the force of Naruto’s roar as his body
flashed a brilliant red. Ino’s body suddenly jerked as something slammed into
it, and the girl went sprawling.
Jaws dropped as the other Genins watched Naruto’s shoulders
quake. The boy dropped to one knee, planting a hand on the ground and lowering
his head.
In the long silence that followed, Genma stepped forward. He
looked down at Ino, who was whimpering softly but showed no effort to get up.
With the shock of getting thrown out of a person’s body, hers would be down for
some time. Glancing at the boy, Genma lifted his hand.
“I declare this match over. The winner is Uzumaki Naruto!”
A few cheers rose from the Genins, but Naruto still didn’t
move from his position on the ground. After a long moment, he slowly rose to
his feet. He lifted his hands, staring blankly down at them. He slowly closed
one hand, then the other, and reopened them. Lifting his head slightly, he
stared as he stretched both arms out in front of him, clenched his hands into
fists, and pulled them back to his sides.
Kakashi, who had been watching from the upper level as well,
frowned at Naruto’s behavior. It’s not
like him to ignore cheers. Normally, he’d be running all over the place by now,
yelling his air-filled head off. Mildly concerned, he leapt over the
railing and landed beside his student.
“Naruto, you may want to get off the battle floor now. They do have other fights to hold.” Kakashi
lifted an eyebrow at the boy’s lack of response.
“Naruto?”
A low chuckle began to rumble out of Naruto’s chest, filling
the silent air. Naruto slowly lifted his head, his chuckles increasing.
“I don’t believe it. After all this time, I’m in control.”
Kakashi frowned at the unnaturally deep voice that rolled
out of Naruto’s throat, a chill racing down his spine. No. It’s not possible that...there’s no way for it to...
Tipping his head back, Naruto let out a loud, barking laugh.
“After seventeen fucking years, I’m finally free!!” Red
chakra began spilling out of him, swirling about his body as he laughed
gleefully. “I’m free!!!”
Baring a feral grin, Naruto turned his red, slitted eyes on
Kakashi.
“Kyuubi no Kitsune...is back!”
