Uchiha Sasuke pushed a lock of raven black hair back from his bruised cheek as he sat in the small window seat of his private hospital room. The sun had risen hours ago, shining its brilliant light on the world, and still he sat there as he had been sitting there since he'd awakened there in the middle of the night, his mind replaying Orochimaru's final minutes over and over again. Sasuke... had done practically nothing. Naruto... and the other two Sannin had finished the snake-bastard off. Sasuke snorted. He supposed it was in his own best interests not to refer to Orochimaru as a "snake bastard" considering... he paused in that thought, stopping it cold as he looked down into the palm of his hand. There was no mark, but that hand summoned snakes just the same as Orochimaru's. He’d learned some things from the outlaw Sannin, but in the end even that so-called great and powerful man hadn't been powerful enough.
Sasuke looked from his palm out into the barren, dusty yard of the Konoha Hospital. Like this... so far behind everyone else in this world - people he should have surpassed, but couldn't because he didn't have what it would take to do that - ... Sasuke knew he would be unable to fulfill his mission. Unable to keep his promise and fulfill his destiny as an Avenger. Naruto, the moron of morons, was stronger than he was. HIM! The "great" Uchiha Prodigy. He was pathetic and that knowledge made his lip curl in a snarl of rage, an external show of the way his insides twisted. He could so easily despise himself. He had to do something or forever be so weak. But what could be done?
“Will you get off your stinking ass already?!” Naruto demanded as he entered the room without bothering to knock. He had a few bandages on his hands - from using the Rasengan a few too many times - and on his head - from falling one too many times off of Gamabunta, among other things - but he was healing quickly and was expected to be released within the week. “The old hag and the pervert need to talk to you.” He crossed his arms stubbornly and glared at his teammate, his gaze clearly stating that if Sasuke did not move under his own power he was going to be dragged.
Sasuke's face had returned to its normal blank coolness the moment Naruto had touched the door. His blond fr-... teammate had seen far too much of his more emotional side in the last few years. It was time to end that. Slowly, stiffly and painfully Sasuke rose and turned. His back was straight as he headed past Naruto his strides taking him towards the door, the hall and whatever the Godaime Hokage and whichever of the two perverts in question - either Jiraiya or Kakashi since Naruto used the name for both - had in store for him. He barely cast Naruto a glance. He was too uncertain as to whether he really hated Naruto or just despised him for having so much more power than him. But some small voice was whispering it wasn't Naruto's power that Sasuke was cursing so much as the blond's alluring charm and tempting friendliness. Well, the friendliness Sasuke saw directed at those around him most of the time. It was rare that he himself received any of it... and that was just the way he'd have it... even if it might not have been the way he had always wanted it any more.
Naruto stepped aside to let Sasuke pass and then turned to follow close at his heels, making sure the Uchiha went straight to where he was supposed to and not somewhere else. As far as the fox-boy was concerned, Sasuke had tried to run away far too many times. Every time Naruto had had to follow him and save his sorry ass from himself. It was frustrating... in more ways than one. “You're walking like a grandma,” Naruto growled in complaint, thinking Sasuke was moving too slowly.
“Usurakontachi...” Sasuke growled without turning to look at his rival. There was so much more that he could say, but they'd reached their destination - the main waiting room on this floor of the hospital - and so he remained silent after that and entered. ::Damn stupid Naruto... hovering over me like that... :: was all he could really think about the subject at the moment as well, considering his body was beginning to throb weakly in pain, a distraction he couldn’t quite ignore in his unhealthy state. He ground his teeth, remained standing and standing straight, as he faced his superiors... and lord how he hated to acknowledge that.
“ About time,” Jiraiya muttered as he watched the boys walk towards him and Tsunade. He nodded to her to begin Sasuke's questioning. She was the Hokage after all, not him.
Naruto didn't move from his spot behind Sasuke, watching him carefully for any signs that he might bolt.
The woman known as the Legendary Sucker sized up her temporary captive thoughtfully. ::He's hurting. The corners of his eyes are strained, his lips are pinched. He's paler than he should be. His chakra is drained. His heart rate is erratic... but I don't think he'll bolt. He knows his limits, even though he might not like them.:: “Jiraiya...” Tsunade-Hokage said sweetly to the gray-haired man that had spoken first, but her tone changed a little as her temper showed. She'd had enough of this Orochimaru business and the sooner they were done with it all the happier she’d be. “Call off your apprentice-guard dog.” Her words were tart. She and Naruto were nasty to one another, but it was a love-hate relationship sort of like that of siblings.
Feeling like a slave at auction as the deceptively young Hokage looked him over Sasuke stood steady and waited for the Sannin to speak with him. He wanted to be anywhere but here. He could never defeat... No. Defeat wasn’t enough. He could never kill Itachi this way. He had to train, had to get stronger... but he'd already been training. He'd already tried to get stronger... perhaps it wasn't him. Perhaps it was this village - the certain emotional ties he held here - that kept him so stunted. The two Sannin before him had left the village many years ago and their power might somewhat be a product of that exodus. Perhaps if he left and traveled, used his Sharingan to gain power as their Sensei, Hatake Kakashi, did, he would find the one Jutsu that would clench his victory over his brother. His mind wandered a little into thoughts of what he could do to leave, where he might go, when the thought of his lack of sense came to him. He couldn't leave like this. They could stop him far too easily. When he was healed completely, he would go. He would hunt the power that would enable him to hunt and kill his brother. If it would not come to him, he would go to it. The village was a roadblock in his life Sasuke realized. He had to leave it to achieve his goals. Yes, it was clear to him now. If he had truly left for good before he would not have gotten... attached to his teammates. Never have made friends, never have had to even think about heeding his hated brother's advice. It was better if he left and sought the power elsewhere. There had to be another way.
Jiraiya sighed and gave Naruto a pointed look, motioning the boy to come stand next to him. Tsunade’s temper was shorter than it usually was and that was a very dangerous thing.
Naruto did as told, but he made sure to bump into Sasuke on the way in a wordless display of annoyance and frustration. He was annoyed at his teammate for being part of the cause of the whole mess with Orochimaru. The long mess. It had taken Konoha three years to finally eliminate the poisonous thorn in its side, and it probably wouldn't have taken that long if Sasuke hadn't actually managed to run all the way to the snake bastard at some point and stay with him long enough to learn some things. Naruto's frustration... was of a different sort. For years he had grudgingly admitted - only to himself - that Sasuke was a friend. But there were times when that river of friendship seemed to run just a little too deep... and Naruto didn't know what to do about it.
Satisfied now that Sasuke was standing alone for their scrutiny Tsunade folded her arms under her ample bosom and slammed one foot upon the seat of the chair in front of her. A most unladylike thing to do, but what the hell did she care about being ladylike.
“Uchiha Sasuke, what you have done could be considered treason. I trust you know how high a crime that is?”
He nodded his dark head slightly, raven wing bangs swaying minutely. He was so exhausted his hair even looked less its lustrous self. “It is a crime punishable by death. Brutal death.” He felt it prudent to add that last bit for some reason. His frustration was seeping out despite his intense effort to hold his emotions in check. He felt off balance and why did damn Naruto-dobe have to be there to hear and see him get dressed down by their Hokage and her toad-gopher? Damn the old woman and her stupid malicious personality. The throb in Sasuke's sore right shoulder was worse now, thanks to Naruto, and Sasuke had made sure to cast one of his best chilled-bastard glares at Naruto's back as the blond had settled at the ero sennin's side, much like a gopher himself.
Tsunade nodded and shifted her stance to lean on the thigh of her raised leg. “We want to trust you Sasuke. We understand your self-appointed mission. We know why you went to him and it is forgivable... but we need to have proof that you can be trusted. Sasuke –…”
“You want to know everything there is to know about the Sound Village and Orochimaru's plans...” ::Like it wasn't obvious, hag.:: Sasuke moved forward and as he did so his eyes never left Tsunade's. “You don't understand one damn thing about me. No one does,” and with that he reached out and picked up a pencil from the end table by Tsunade's raised foot. The small stack of blank scrolls dwindled fast each one filling with information as Sasuke wrote hurriedly of everything he had seen. He drew maps and included incredible detail in all reports and drawings. When he was finished after a half an hour of nothing but the sound of his pencil on the paper, he stood from the seat he had taken and looked to Tsunade his black eyes chill. “That's everything I know.” He muttered and turned starting to walk out. The silence behind him was heavy. “Don't bother me again...” Sasuke snapped. He wasn't being entirely truthful with them though all the information he’d given them was as accurate as he had the ability to make it. They just didn't really need to know he could summon snakes or do a few other things that were probably detestable by their standards. They didn’t need to know how much like Orochimaru he had truly become. Did they?
Naruto watched him go in silence, his gaze thoughtful. He didn't even notice when Tsunade and Jiraiya began to discuss the information Sasuke had given them. Making a decision Naruto walked back to Sasuke's room and leaned in the doorway. “...What did you mean, that no one understands you?” he asked, his tone demanding an answer.
Sasuke was back on the window seat, unable to allow himself to be bedridden. The sun was warm on his chilled face. He figured it was the loss of so much blood during the final battle that had him so chilled and pale all of the time now. Without looking behind him he answered, “If you even have to ask that, dobe, then it is obvious you understand me least of all.” His tone was chillier than usual somewhat matching how he felt, chilled right down to the bone. His mind was churning over his new plan. To just leave the village and not look back until he'd accomplished his first goal... it was the only way. He couldn't, just could not take the only other path to killing his brother.
“What the HELL is your problem?!” Naruto ground out in frustration, stomping over to stand next to his teammate. “I'm trying to be nice to you and you just brush me off?! To hell with that!! You said no one understands you!! Well, maybe I'm trying to!! I'm trying to understand what the hell was going through your mind every time you tried to run to Orochimaru, all those times you tried to kill me!! I thought that teammates are supposed to look out for each other!! That's all I've been trying to do!! But if you want to be the prince of angst and self-pity then fine!! I hope you rot in misery, you stupid bastard!!”
Furious Naruto whirled and stormed from the room.
Still Sasuke did not turn. Something inside of him trembled at the fury, not out of fear but out of some unknown sensation. Or rather, a sensation he hadn't let himself feel often in a really long time. His health be damned. It was time to go now.
“I wonder what Naruto's problem was! Rushing past us like that without even a hello!” Haruno Sakura complained as they walked down the eerily quiet hallway of the wing of the hospital Sasuke-kun rested in. She and Ino each carried a flower prepared to present them in person to the boy of their dreams.
“Who knows...” Yamanaka Ino said with an indifferent shrug. All she cared about at the moment was getting to see Sasuke. Seeing Sasuke's door as they rounded a corner she began to walk a little faster.
Not to be outdone by her best friend and rival Sakura picked up the pace enough to just move past Ino. She would reach that room first.
::Oh no you don't!:: Ino too quickened her pace, and she managed to get to the door a half second before Sakura. “Sasuke-kun!” she chirped cheerfully. “How ar-...”
Sakura was only that one step behind the blond-haired girl but her greeting died completely in her throat without any utterance upon seeing the open window and no Sasuke. “Oh no...” Sakura murmured and took a step back. “Oh no... not again...” and then, as though someone had snapped their fingers, Sakura leapt into action. “Ino, look for him nearby. His injuries might have slowed him down. If you find him try and detain him. I'm going for help!”
With that she whirled and took off down the hall not even questioning the fact that she was determined to find Naruto first before anyone. Her mind knew Naruto had always brought Sasuke back to her before and he would do it again... wouldn't he? “Naruto!” she cried upon seeing his stomping form in the distant. “Naruto, matte!!!” She ran faster, pushing herself. She had to get to him.
Naruto didn't slow down. He knew what Sakura wanted and didn't want any part of it. Not anymore. “Go away, Sakura-chan.”
“Naruto! Sasuke-kun is gone again!” she drew even with him and whipped around to stand before him stopping him dead in his tracks. “Please, Naruto...” she panted, begged, pleaded. “I know you can't keep doing this... but Naruto... do you want to have do what Tsunade-sama and Jiraiya-san had to do? Do you want to face Sasuke like they faced Orochimaru - their old friend and teammate - and have to kill him?” Sakura was desperate. Why did Sasuke keep doing this to her... to all of them!?
“I won't have to. He'll kill himself,” Naruto said with cold firmness, believing his words. “And I'm tired of saving him from himself. If he wants to go to his death, then fine. To hell with him.” With that he turned and went back the way he came, only to turn down a different hallway that he knew would take him out of the building.
Sakura stared after her retreating teammate's back. “You can't mean that... Naruto...” she whispered softly as she sank to her knees there in the hallway stunned by the blond's vehemence. By the time she came to her senses the village was on full alert, everyone watching for Sasuke, searching for him when and where they could. The pink-haired girl made her way to Sasuke's apartment only to find she'd gotten there too late. He'd cleaned out what he needed most and left what he didn't or what couldn't be taken with him. Sighing in defeat she left for home, fell on her bed and cried. Sasuke would never listen to her the way he would listen to Naruto. Never.
