i could pretty much understand that you intend to have the scenes change from the past to the present, the least you could do for the readers convenience is to indicate it.

put some "flashback", "end of flashback" or "a year ago", "present" or something so your readers won't be confused of the timeline.

as for the story, it's too early to comment on it, but you did a good start.
