I think FromAfar makes a good point about Sasuke: the story has framed him as being an awful jerk that we're supposed to dislike, but it seems like his personality is a result of all the pressure he was under growing up, so I can't exactly fault him for that. Under different circumstances, he might have grown up to be a more pleasant person. However, for his own self-preservation, it seems as though he HAD to turn into the kind of person who could cut his ties with his family; otherwise, he would have continued to live under the crushing weight of his father's expectations and the shadow of his older brother. (If he was already well-aware of those expectations by the time he was 11, you can imagine what it must have been like for him growing up.)

Of course you can blame him for how unfair his escape was to Naruto and Itachi, but it wouldn't have been an escape from his family if he didn't cut ties with all of his immediate family, and unfortunately that includes his brothers. The fact that things went wrong with his two brothers after he left, well, that's entirely their own faults. No one forced Naruto to attempt suicide, and no one forced Itachi to neglect Naruto (trying to save the company isn't a good enough excuse, quite frankly. If he had enough time for parties and a girlfriend, he should have had enough time for Naruto).

I guess what I'm saying is, the tone of the story so far is painting Naruto and Itachi as the victims and Sasuke almost as the villain (i.e., all the narrative comments that call him cold, selfish, etc. However, his actions tell us all we need to know about his personality without the extra commentary), but there are good reasons to sympathize with all three characters, and good reasons to dislike them all as well. I feel like the story could be even more emotionally gripping if we were allowed to sympathize with Sasuke more, and to dislike Naruto and Itachi more. (This isn't really a case where there should be good guys and bad guys, you know? It's a case where there's an entire dysfunctional family.)

Ah, and finally, I know you were only joking around about not wanting to work on the next chapter of this until you got X number of reviews, but seriously, you shouldn't say stuff like that because it annoys people and makes them not want to review rather than encouraging them.

This is a really interesting take. I have so many questions in regards to Naruto, but the one that I really want to know is what drove him to make that decision? As for Sasuke, he seems so detached and uncaring...I really look forward to how you will be developing both characters. I was a really nice touch to show the contrast between the past Naruto and the present Naruto. I am also interested to see how Itachi will adapt to this.

this looks very promising and i love the plot idea so far. my only fear is that it turns into a happy every after-story á la disney. i like the more subdued, gloomy and dark fics better. keep it up and update soon.

Well, I liked the chapter. It left me sad, angry. The whole situation is just too familiar.
As far as I can see, Sasuke and Naruto are both victims of so-called "family", the Uchihas. Naruto, an orphan and the youngest of two, will have hardest time dealing with lack of attention, demands, status issues etc.
You were good at labelling Sasuke cold, selfish, too practical, a bastard etc., but the whole background + flashbacks prove all this to be just a consequence, a survival tactic if you like.. Why should one feel guilty of not feeling something for people who had been forcing him to perform his "family duties" in the past? Obviously, Sasuke didn't feel loved, approved, a part of his own family and wanted to get away from it. It's hard to expect true emotion from such a person. Constant pressure, envy, competition for attention he could never get, feelings of despair as a certain path had been mapped for you.. no freedom at all.
Sasuke is just the kind of person it takes one to become to get out of such a mess of a family.
I hate Kyuubi who looks just like a bitchy Fugaku Uchiha's extension.. she never really cared about Naruto (as well as her boyfriend) and now she selfishly tosses the boy to a better-off Sasuke.. blackmailing = forcing him to do it. Sasuke's again forced to do something. Again. This old resentment, irritation, anger that Sasuke feels now are understandable, real and well-deserved emotions. Still, they believe he owes them something.. he should show something. So he does, hating it all.
As I said, Naruto's going to suffer the most in this situation. He really is not wanted in this family. And he wasn't enough for Sasuke to stay in the family. Hm, what "family" am I talking about??
Good luck with the story. I like the plot and wish Sasuke & Naruto to find something they miss or lost.. somehow.

This story has blown me away so far. The plot is quite original and intriguing; I think it will develop into a wonderful story down the road. The characters are fantastic and rather canon like. I especially love the way you described Kyuubi as a female, because in the series Kyuubi actually is female, so bonus points to you on that. xD All in all, this looks like a moving and promising story and I hope for you to continue it soon.
